The day I realized I had a hundred acquaintances and zero real friends was one of the loneliest days of my life.<\/b><\/p>\n

And I was standing in a church full of people when it hit me.<\/span><\/p>\n

I was smiling. Nodding. Hugging. Doing all the things a pastor\u2019s wife is supposed to do. <\/span><\/p>\n

But inside? I was completely empty<\/strong>. I had women who loved my husband\u2019s sermons. Women who complimented my kids. And women who needed things from me constantly.<\/span><\/p>\n

But not one of them knew the real me.<\/b><\/p>\n

Real friendship, the kind where someone knows your mess and stays anyway, feels almost impossible in ministry. And if you\u2019ve ever whispered to yourself, \u201cDo I even have real friends?<\/em><\/strong>\u201c; that question is not dramatic. <\/span><\/p>\n

It is not ungrateful. It\u2019s one of the most honest things a ministry wife can ask.<\/span><\/p>\n

This post is for the pastor\u2019s wife who is surrounded by people and still feels completely alone. Let\u2019s talk about it honestly.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Unique Loneliness of Ministry Life<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

Nobody tells you this when your husband accepts the call.<\/b><\/p>\n

People in the church will love you, and also keep their distance. They will hug you on Sunday and whisper about you on Monday. They\u2019ll praise your husband\u2019s sermon and critique your outfit in the same breath.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have been criticized for my hair, my shoes, my laugh, and my choice to work outside the home. I have been told I was \u201ctoo friendly\u201d<\/strong> and also \u201ctoo standoffish.\u201d<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n

You simply cannot win.<\/span><\/p>\n

And yet, in the middle of all that criticism, I still craved real friendship. I still needed someone to call on a hard Tuesday. Someone who wouldn\u2019t use my struggles as sermon illustration fodder.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why Real Friendship Feels Impossible in the Church<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

Here\u2019s the hard truth: the women in your congregation can\u2019t always be your closest friends. There is a power dynamic that exists whether we like it or not<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n

When you lead, the friendship shifts. They look up to you. That changes things.<\/span><\/p>\n
