Parents can take advantage of these \u201cteachable moments\u201d when they arise to help their kids begin building the foundation for a lifetime of financial success.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"zDIwP _8wDM6 CCfLw hLCy-\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-7gdvs\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"lig--\"><span style=\"color:#717d97;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>Researchers from the University of Minnesota suggest focusing \u201cchildren\u2019s education about money on the concepts of earning, spending, saving, borrowing, and sharing.\u201d<\/span><\/span><span><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color:#717d97;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>In her paper \u201cPractice Makes Perfect: Experiential Learning as a Method of Financial Socialization,\u201d University of Arizona doctoral student Ashley LeBaron explores the effectiveness of hands-on learning opportunities for teaching children about money.<\/span><\/span><span><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color:#717d97;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>LeBaron concludes that parents should teach their children about money through example, explanation and applied practice.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"zDIwP _8wDM6 CCfLw hLCy-\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-rkbh3383090\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"lig--\"><span><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color:#717d97;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>\u201cI think it\u2019s hard for parents, sometimes, to let their kids make mistakes,\u201d LeBaron said. \u201cIt\u2019s tempting to just shield kids from everything related to money, but it\u2019s really important for parents to get money into kids\u2019 hands early on so they can practice working for it, managing it and learning how to spend it wisely.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"k5I2t k8wFp PsBxf hLCy-\" style=\"line-height:max(0.8em, 1.24138em)\" dir=\"auto\" data-ricos-heading=\"fi2rg\" id=\"viewer-fi2rg\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span aria-hidden=\"https:\/\/www.francesmackay.com\/post\/true\" id=\"preschool-and-kindergarten-ages-3-to-5-fi2rg\"\/><span class=\"wemRL\"><strong style=\"font-weight:700\"><span style=\"color:#717d97;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>Preschool and Kindergarten: Ages 3 to 5<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"zDIwP _8wDM6 CCfLw hLCy-\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-96vic\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"lig--\"><span style=\"color:#717d97;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>Children as young as 3 years old understand basic economic concepts, and by age 7, kids have developed permanent financial habits.<\/span><\/span><span><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color:#717d97;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>This is a good time to start explaining that material goods cost money. Give them a piggy bank, or better yet, help them establish spending and sharing jars, which will allow them to see what happens to their balance depending on the decisions they make.<\/span><\/span><span><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color:#717d97;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>Talk to your preschooler or kindergartener about sharing with others. Koblinger included an example of how a friend of hers used car shopping as an opportunity to teach his 10-year-old \u201csmart ways to save, how to see through clever marketing, how to negotiate prices, and how to avoid the pitfalls of loans.\u201d<\/span><\/span><span><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color:#717d97;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>You can even teach children this age about
