We now know where the authentic Captain America<\/a> shield from Stephen Colbert\u2019s<\/a> talk show set \u2014 one given to him by Marvel<\/a> itself \u2014 wound up after the cancelation of the\u00a0Late Show With Stephen Colbert.<\/em><\/p>\n It is now in the hands of\u00a0Colbert\u2019s\u00a0friend and late-night competitor, Jimmy Kimmel<\/a>.<\/p>\n The pair recounted the story on last night\u2019s\u00a0Jimmy Kimmel Live<\/em>, where Colbert appeared as a guest the night after he won an Emmy for Outstanding Variety Series for the final year of his now-canceled late-night talk show.<\/p>\n As Colbert explained it, when Marvel killed off Steve Rogers in the pages of the\u00a0Civil War<\/em> comic book, he received a letter from the company\u2019s editor-in-chief, Joe Quesada. At the time, Colbert was the host of\u00a0The Colbert Report<\/em>, a spoof of blowhard news channel opinion shows where he played a pumped-up cartoon of an ultra-patriotic journalist.<\/p>\n \u201c[Quesada] said \u2018Listen, we opened Cap\u2019s will. And we read Steve Rogers\u2019 will. And in the will it says that he believe the only person patriotic enough to wield the solid vibranium shield was Steven Colbert,\u2019\u201d Colbert recalled.<\/p>\n He continued \u201cSo they had a shield that had been hanging on the wall at Marvel since 1960. And they sent it to me. And that hung on my set for the next 20 years. And so when my set was being taken apart, I knew exactly where I wanted to send the shield. So I wrote you a letter and I sent you the shield.\u201d<\/p>\n Kimmel then revealed the shield, which the pair then mounted behind the cameras on the set of\u00a0Jimmy Kimmel Live<\/em>,\u00a0where Kimmel said it will now live in perpetuity \u2014 or at least until his\u00a0<\/em>show gets canceled.<\/p>\n You can watch the whole exchange below. It was replaced<\/a> by the syndicated program\u00a0Comics Unleashed With Byron Allen.\u00a0<\/em>He is now working on the script for a new\u00a0<\/a>Lord of the Rings<\/em><\/a> movie with Peter Jackson.<\/p>\n According to reports in the trades, Kimmel is currently negotiating for a contract extention on his talk show with ABC.
