Is Sibylline really as controversial as the internet makes it sound? \ud83d\udd2e I\u2019m diving into Melissa de la Cruz\u2019s dark academia fantasy, from its magical university and true love triangle to its mature content, YA age rating, and the controversy surrounding one much-discussed scene.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/blockquote>\n

This is going to be a fun one.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today I\u2019m reviewing Sibylline<\/em> by Melissa de la Cruz<\/strong>, and I went into this book with a lot of curiosity\u2014not just because I like Melissa de la Cruz, but because of the massive amount of controversy surrounding this book online<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

I work closely with the YA section at my bookstore, I love YA, and I firmly believe there is no age limit on enjoying young adult books<\/strong>. I also take age categorization seriously, especially when a book contains mature content.<\/span><\/p>\n

So when I started seeing people claim that Sibylline<\/em> contained an extremely controversial sexual encounter, my immediate reaction was basically:<\/span><\/p>\n

Wait. What the hell is happening in this book?<\/span><\/p>\n

Thankfully, the publisher had sent me an ARC, so instead of relying on what everyone else was saying online, I decided to read it myself.<\/span><\/p>\n

And after finishing it?<\/span><\/p>\n

I have thoughts<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\ud83d\udd2e Why I Wanted to Read Sibylline<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n
\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n

I\u2019ve been reading Melissa de la Cruz for years. I loved the Blue Bloods<\/em> series<\/strong>, although Witches of East End<\/em> didn\u2019t work nearly as well for me.<\/span><\/p>\n

But Sibylline<\/em> reminded me why I enjoy de la Cruz\u2019s storytelling.<\/span><\/p>\n

The book follows Raven, Atticus, and Dorian, three longtime friends who dream of attending Sibylline College of Magical Arts. When all three are rejected, they find another way onto campus: they get jobs at the university and essentially decide to steal themselves an education<\/strong>, sneaking into lectures and accessing forbidden magical knowledge. Meanwhile, their own powers begin awakening, their long-buried feelings become increasingly complicated, and something sinister is happening inside the university.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dark academia?<\/span><\/p>\n

Magical university?<\/span><\/p>\n

Murder and secrets?<\/span><\/p>\n

Complicated relationships?<\/span><\/p>\n

Okay, I\u2019m listening.<\/span><\/p>\n

\ud83d\udda4 A True Love Triangle<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n

One thing Sibylline<\/em> does differently is give us what I would actually call a true love triangle<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Raven, Atticus, and Dorian aren\u2019t three characters where two people are competing for the affection of the third. The feelings exist throughout the trio, and those shifting relationships become an important part of the emotional tension.<\/span><\/p>\n

The publisher even describes the trio\u2019s long-buried attractions as awakening alongside their magic, while resentment and unrequited feelings threaten their friendship.<\/span><\/p>\n

And I liked that!<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m not someone who needs romance to enjoy a book. Give me a good plot first. But if you\u2019re going to include romance, give me something to latch onto<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

There is so much yearning and tension between these three characters, and because we get three distinct POVs<\/strong>, we get to understand how each person views the others and their increasingly complicated relationship.<\/span><\/p>\n

\ud83d\udc40 So\u2026 About the Controversy<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n

This is probably what many people are going to want to know about.<\/span><\/p>\n

There is mature sexual content late in the novel involving the central trio<\/strong>, and I understand why the scene has generated discussion about whether Sibylline<\/em> belongs in YA.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, after reading the scene myself\u2014and rereading it because I wanted to make sure I understood what actually happened\u2014I don\u2019t think some of the most sensational descriptions circulating online accurately represent the sequence of events in the book.<\/span><\/p>\n

What I do<\/em> think is worth discussing is the book\u2019s intended audience.<\/span><\/p>\n

And here\u2019s where official information is particularly helpful: Penguin Random House itself lists Sibylline<\/em> for ages 17 and up and Grade 11+<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

That distinction matters.<\/span><\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t being positioned by its publisher as a book for the entire 13\u201318 YA spectrum. It\u2019s upper YA<\/strong>, and I think readers, parents, booksellers, librarians, and educators should know that going in.<\/span><\/p>\n

\ud83d\udcda Should It Be Considered YA?<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n

For me, this is where the conversation becomes much more interesting than the viral controversy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Do I think Sibylline<\/em> is appropriate for every YA reader?<\/span><\/p>\n

No.<\/span><\/p>\n

Personally, I would recommend it to older teen readers<\/strong>, and that actually aligns pretty closely with the publisher\u2019s official 17+<\/strong> age guidance.<\/span><\/p>\n

I also understand why its selection as the February 2026 Good Morning America YA Book Club pick<\/strong> put an enormous spotlight on its YA classification. It really was GMA\u2019s YA selection, so this wasn\u2019t simply an internet misunderstanding about how the book was being marketed.<\/span><\/p>\n

I think there\u2019s room for nuance here.<\/span><\/p>\n

A book can belong in YA while still being intended specifically for the upper end of YA readership<\/strong>. Calling something YA doesn\u2019t automatically mean it\u2019s appropriate for every teenager.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s why age guidance and knowing what\u2019s actually in a book matter more to me than outrage based on secondhand descriptions.<\/span><\/p>\n

\ud83c\udfdb\ufe0f The Dark Academia Actually Works<\/h2>\n

Once we get beyond the controversy, there\u2019s an actual fantasy novel here\u2014and I really enjoyed it<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The dark academia setting gave me exactly the kind of atmosphere I wanted. Sibylline is an elite magical institution with secrets buried beneath its prestigious exterior, and Raven, Atticus, and Dorian aren\u2019t even supposed to be students there.<\/span><\/p>\n

They\u2019re infiltrating it.<\/span><\/p>\n

I loved that premise.<\/span><\/p>\n

The trio eventually discovers that something dangerous has infected the university, killing students and threatening Sibylline itself.<\/span><\/p>\n

So while the romantic tension is important, it isn\u2019t the entire story<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s a huge plus for me.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2728 A Magic System That Gave the Story Its Own Identity<\/h2>\n

The magic was another standout.<\/span><\/p>\n

I read a lot of fantasy. A lot<\/strong>. So when a book can give me a magical system that feels interesting enough to distinguish itself from everything else I\u2019m reading, I\u2019m happy.<\/span><\/p>\n

The way magic works alongside the structure of Sibylline gave me something concrete to latch onto, and I liked watching these three characters discover more about their abilities while simultaneously uncovering the darker elements of the institution they\u2019ve spent their lives idolizing.<\/span><\/p>\n

The publisher describes the book as the first installment in a YA dark-academia romantasy series, and that combination really does capture what you\u2019re getting: magic, mystery, romance, academia, danger, and complicated characters.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\ud83d\udd8b\ufe0f Melissa de la Cruz\u2019s Storytelling<\/h2>\n

This was also such a good reminder of what I enjoy about Melissa de la Cruz.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her writing feels effortless<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s concise and moves quickly without sacrificing emotion. There isn\u2019t a lot of unnecessary fluff slowing everything down, and that made Sibylline<\/em> incredibly easy for me to keep reading.<\/span><\/p>\n

The three POVs also work because each character feels distinct. I wasn\u2019t wondering whose chapter I was reading or why I should care about that perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n

Add in the yearning, magical mystery, dark-academia atmosphere, and plot twists, and I was hooked.<\/span><\/p>\n

Final Thoughts<\/h2>\n

Sibylline<\/em> is a much more interesting book than the controversy surrounding it would suggest.<\/span><\/p>\n

I went into this prepared to scrutinize the content because of everything I\u2019d heard, but I came away remembering exactly why I\u2019ve enjoyed Melissa de la Cruz\u2019s books over the years.<\/span><\/p>\n

The dark academia works<\/strong>. The magic system is interesting<\/strong>. The three POVs add dimension to the story. The plot kept me invested, and the relationship between Raven, Atticus, and Dorian gives us an actual complicated three-way romantic dynamic rather than the traditional \u201cwho will they choose?\u201d love triangle.<\/span><\/p>\n

Is it appropriate for every YA reader?<\/span><\/p>\n

Absolutely not.<\/span><\/p>\n

And the publisher itself categorizing the novel as 17+<\/strong> is something I think should be highlighted when recommending it.<\/span><\/p>\n

But I also don\u2019t think the entire novel should be reduced to one controversial scene.<\/span><\/p>\n

There is a genuinely compelling dark-academia fantasy surrounding that conversation, and I would absolutely read the sequel<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Good news for me: there is one. Diviner<\/strong><\/em> is officially the second book and is currently scheduled for February 2, 2027<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, yes.<\/span><\/p>\n
