On the morning of my daughter\u2019s high school graduation last spring, I received difficult news.<\/p>\n

Staring at the text message, I took a few deep breaths and weighed my options.<\/p>\n

Responding right then would\u2019ve meant halting my morning preparations to craft a reply\u2014one that undoubtedly would pull me away from the joy of the day and into an emotional spiral.<\/p>\n

I glanced at the message again, felt the familiar tug of urgency, and made a conscious decision to put away my phone and turn back to the mirror.<\/p>\n

As I steadied myself, three familiar words quietly rose within me:<\/p>\n

Only Love Today.<\/em><\/p>\n

When I got into the car with several family members, I briefly considered sharing the news. But I knew saying it out loud would throw me off-center and cast a shadow over our momentous day.<\/p>\n

It helped to remember something my mom once told me after I delayed sharing difficult news with my children:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s okay to give yourself time to process hard things before helping anyone else do the same.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t long before Avery and her fellow graduates entered the convention center donned in their caps and gowns. As the traditional graduation march filled the convocation center, tears began to flow. In that moment, I remembered the deeper promise I was keeping, not just to my child, but also to myself.<\/p>\n

Fourteen years earlier, at Avery\u2019s preschool graduation, I\u2019d had a painful awakening. I realized I was missing my own life\u2014living distracted, self-critical, always managing\u2014and with that, missing the chance to truly know my child. That day, as the tiny graduates sang songs about growing up, I cried tears of gratitude. We can choose to stay present for what\u00a0is still ours<\/em>\u00a0to celebrate.<\/p>\n

Not forever.
Not perfectly.
Just today.
Just this moment.<\/p>\n

That is what I managed to do at my daughter\u2019s high school graduation.<\/p>\n
