New Study Reveals Widespread Concern Among Pastors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div wp_automatic_readability=\"92.563482466747\">\n<p>While it\u2019s no surprise that AI (Artificial Intelligence) is growing in society, what is surprising is how many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crosswalk.com\/church\/pastors-or-leadership\/\">pastors<\/a> use it in their churches and with their congregations. According to Barna and Premier Christian News, recent studies have found that nearly all pastors in the United States (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barna.com\/research\/pastors-using-ai-ministry\/\">87<\/a> percent) use technology in some way, shape, or form.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, while most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crosswalk.com\/church\/pastors-or-leadership\/\">pastors<\/a> do implement the ever-growing and expanding technology, that does not mean they have no concerns about AI. In fact, most ministers are concerned when it comes to AI, particularly when it comes to Scripture. The study shows that more than nine in 10 pastors, \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/premierchristian.news\/us\/news\/article\/pastors-worry-that-ai-misinterprets-the-bible\">94<\/a>\u00a0percent, are concerned about AI misinterpreting Scripture. These numbers are alarming not just because so many people are using AI, but because AI is directly shaping biblical interpretation (and often incorrectly).<\/p>\n<p>While agreement on the probable risks and dangers of Artificial Intelligence is easy, the <a href=\"https:\/\/billygraham.org\/decision-magazine\/articles\/barna-research-finds-shared-concern-over-ai-misinterpreting-scripture-1\">Billy Graham Association<\/a> explains that what we should do about AI is not. In Barna\u2019s two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barna.com\/research\/ai-scripture-interpretation\/\">surveys<\/a>, conducted in partnership with Gloo for the State of the Church initiative, participants were asked what AI should do regarding \u201cthe areas of theology where interpretations genuinely differ.\u201d Surprisingly, only 60% of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crosswalk.com\/church\/pastors-or-leadership\/\">pastors<\/a> said they preferred the technology to reveal \u201cmajor interpretations and explain where they differ,\u201d but only 26% \u201cof practicing Christians agree with this approach, with a separate 26% stating they do want AI to highlight which interpretation it finds most accurate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianitydaily.com\/news\/94-of-pastors-worry-ai-may-misinterpret-the-bible-study-finds.html\">Christian Daily<\/a> interviewed Daniel Copeland, Barna\u2019s vice president of research, Copeland noted that pastors appear to view AI more as a helpful tool than an authority on biblical meaning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir approach points to using AI as a tool to aid their learning, not to tell them what to think,\u201d Copeland said. \u201cPastors seem to want people to use the tool but let it expand their understanding and push them to think for themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many Christians do use AI for learning, research, advice, editing and writing assistance, but they also seek it for interpreting Scripture, gaining spiritual wisdom or asking thoughtful questions.
