\n

The title <\/span>Lovely One<\/span> is the English translation of Justice Jackson\u2019s African name: <\/span>Katanji<\/span> <\/span>Onyika. <\/span>Justice Jackson is the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court. Her book is a true autobiography, describing her grandparents, her parents, and she and her brothe<\/span>r growing up. \u00a0<\/span>She goes into great detail about her school years on the Debate Team and the visits to her <\/span>grandparents’<\/span> house fo<\/span>llowing church services on Sundays.<\/span> <\/span>She describes her college life at Harvard<\/span>, her years in musical theatre and performance oration,<\/span> and the many <\/span>jobs in the legal profession<\/span>. It<\/span> also chronicles her family life as an adult with a husband and two children.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Only five of us met this time, there seemed to be a lot of family obligations\/celebrations going on this weekend, since <\/span>it\u2019s<\/span> graduation season<\/span> and class reunion season<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>One of our regular attendees, Kay,<\/span> at her own class reunion, left<\/span> her typewritten notes<\/span>. Kay focused on Justice Jackson\u2019s mother encouraging her to re<\/span>cite Margaret <\/span>Walker\u2019s \u2018<\/span>For My People<\/span>\u2019<\/span> at an oratorical contest.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Justic<\/span>e Jackson<\/span>\u2019s mother<\/span> knew how smart her daughter was and knew she could do it.<\/span> Also, the nature of the poem itself underscored how Justice Jackson\u2019s pare<\/span>nts encouraged pride in their African <\/span>American heritage.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

p.49\u201d At home, my parents surrounded me with the art, fabrics, and memorabilia they had collected <\/span>on their Africa trip, and with books and images that reflected our Black American experience, both the good and the bad; scholar<\/span>ly volumes on race and racism lived on our coffee table…\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

\n

Kay also mentioned Clarence Earl Gideon, the defendant <\/span>who appealed to the Supreme Court back in 1963, and it was <\/span>established<\/span> that if a defendant was too poor to hire a defense lawyer, the court had to supply him with one. <\/span>Justice Jackson has archival copies of the five handwritten pages <\/span>of Mr. Gideon wrote in his petition<\/span> professionally framed and hung on the wall of her Supreme Court chambers.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>After reading Kay\u2019s observations about the book, Marian started off:<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI was pleasantly surprised by the book. I <\/span>didn\u2019t<\/span> expect the book to be so real. Because <\/span>she\u2019s<\/span> a Supreme Court Justice, I though<\/span>t she would use language filled with patriotism with<\/span>out <\/span>caveats<\/span>, and that she would preach black\/white unity without <\/span>referencing<\/span> the Black experience in this country. <\/span>Her parents brought her up with stories of their experiences with Jim Crow, while explicitly encouraging her to embrace her Blackness. <\/span>I was pleasantly surprised that she did not sugarcoat racism and that her life experiences were real: meeting her husband, meeting his family, going with them to that swanky country club, considering what kind of life her potential children might have with these people. Would her children even be accepted among her in-laws\u2019 friends<\/span>?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Then there was hesitancy on the part of her own father<\/span>. He <\/span>basically said<\/span>, if you have children, life is going to be hard for them. Her parents still respected her decision<\/span> and, in the end, came to love and accept her husband and her in-laws.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite<\/span> living with discrimination, <\/span>it seems that her mother\u2019s parents<\/span> were somewhat better off financially and educatio<\/span>nally than her father\u2019s parents. In fact, one of her father\u2019s brothers was sentenced to life under the three-strikes rule of the early nineties. <\/span>Her uncle, a petty courier, was sentenced to life, while the main distributors served no time at all.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI read the book and listened to the audiobook, and it was from the audiobook that I got the greatest amount of understanding of \u201cher.\u201d She came from a family who believed in moving forward<\/span>,<\/span> and there was <\/span>almost a<\/span> formula they had in seeking success. The thing that <\/span>impacted<\/span> me most was her description of her daughter who has special needs. As a <\/span>former <\/span>special ed teacher, I had a lot of parents <\/span>who could have <\/span>benefited<\/span> from the way Justice Jackson accepted her daughter\u2019s long-delayed diagnosis<\/span>,<\/span> and <\/span>the way<\/span> she and her husband did all they could to help their daughter.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Kathleen<\/span> added, \u201c<\/span>Justice Jackson was so <\/span>smart;<\/span> her parents were the right <\/span>parents;<\/span> she got into <\/span>the right<\/span> school system. <\/span>I\u2019d<\/span> never heard of somebody who<\/span> had everything to fall into place like that.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Bonnie <\/span>elaborated further, <\/span>saying,<\/span> \u201cAnd she watched her father study\u00a0at the kitchen table\u00a0<\/span>while he was in <\/span>law school. I did listen again last night to her acceptance speech that was dated April 8, 2022<\/span>,<\/span> and I wrote d<\/span>own this quote:<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u2018<\/span>For one generation to go from segregation to the Supreme Court. I am the dream and the hope of the slave.\u201d When She was thanking people<\/span>,<\/span> she mentioned the Senior High School Debate Team.<\/span>\u2019<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Bonnie continued, \u201c<\/span>One word tha<\/span>t<\/span> I would use to describe her is \u201cchutzpah.\u201d <\/span>I\u2019m<\/span> using this word <\/span>as the ultimate compliment, <\/span>with this meaning: someone who acts with supreme self-confidence and <\/span>a <\/span>complete disregard for the rules, often leaving others both shocked and secretly impressed.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Bonnie then shared with us a New York Times article entitled, \u201cJustice Ketanji Brown Jackson Makes Herself Heard, <\/span>P<\/span>rompting<\/span> a Rebuke,\u201d dated July 5, 2025.<\/span> <\/span>The subtitle of this<\/span> <\/span>headline reads: <\/span>\u201c<\/span>In <\/span>s<\/span>olo dissents this term the justice (Jackson) accused <\/span>the conservative <\/span>majority of<\/span> lawless <\/span>bias. <\/span>On the <\/span>t<\/span>erm\u2019s <\/span>l<\/span>ast <\/span>d<\/span>ay, Justice Amy Coney Barrett <\/span>f<\/span>ired <\/span>b<\/span>ack<\/span>.\u201d The author<\/span> of the article, Adam <\/span>Liptak, stressed<\/span> that <\/span>Justice Jackson<\/span> <\/span>did things in writing opinions that even the mo<\/span>st senior justices took years for them to do, and she did it in her first term.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Shelara said, “<\/span>She is the most overly qualified justice that has ever sat on that bench.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0She <\/span>has to<\/span> sit <\/span>on<\/span> the Supreme Court with Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch<\/span>, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett, who never tried a case. <\/span>The value of the position is decreased by the caliber of the people hired.”<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

Kai<\/span> pointed out, \u201c<\/span>That\u2019s<\/span> the <\/span>thing,<\/span> Justice Jackson is not <\/span>only <\/span>brilliant;<\/span> she has street smarts, that makes her complete.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Shelara<\/span>, <\/span>explaining<\/span> how Justice Jackson\u2019s personal dissents will be the foundation of turning the country around, said<\/span> <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Her job is extra hard because she knows she <\/span>has to<\/span> <\/span>write<\/span> the dissents that are going to be used <\/span>to overturn these biased rulings. <\/span>She believes in this country.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The book was beautifully written, combining both Justice Jackson\u2019s personal life and her professional life seamlessly. The audiobook was read by Justice Jackson herself. Her voice is so <\/span>calming<\/span>;<\/span> her demeanor is so grounded.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0In the Epilogue,<\/span> (p.381)<\/span> she wrote, \u201cI have a job that only 115 Americans have ever done, none of them Black women. Every morning that the Supreme C<\/span>ourt is in session, I shrug into my robe inside my chambers, which are adorned\u00a0w<\/span>ith<\/span> the paintings of Sam Gilliam, Alma Thomas, Herbert Gentry, Lonnie Holley, Glenn Ligon, an<\/span>d William H. Johnson. The Court\u2019s curator <\/span>procured<\/span> these masterpieces from the Smithsonian and other museums; <\/span>thus,<\/span> a collection of works <\/span>by African American artists now hangs inside th<\/span>is fabled institution for the first time in history.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
