font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial; mso-themecolor: text1;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Sometimes I come across<br \/>\na book so full of information, so well researched and written, that I am<br \/>\noverjoyed as a reader.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>These types of<br \/>\nbooks are my go-to, my bread and butter so to speak, and they inspire me<br \/>\ngreatly.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Knowing that a human being had<br \/>\nthe dedication, intelligence, and insight to gather up a vast amount of<br \/>\ninformation, analyze it, and share their conclusions with us readers leaves me<br \/>\nawestruck.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is the type of book<br \/>\ncrafted by Buffie Johnson, a visual artist heavily involved in the Abstract<br \/>\nImagist movement.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Sometime in the nineteen<br \/>\nfifties, a meeting with psychologist Carl Jung propelled this book into<br \/>\nexistence.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>During their time together,<br \/>\nBuffie Johnson discussed her desire to research the many archeological<br \/>\ndiscoveries found that related to the worship of a Mother Goddess, millennia<br \/>\nbefore patriarchal religions altered the worship to that of male gods.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This intrigued Dr. Jung, who gave his<br \/>\nwholehearted support for the project, knowing that this specific field of art<br \/>\nhistory was severely underserved.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Four decades<br \/>\nlater, after travelling the world, visiting different museums and archives, and<br \/>\ngathering up as much data as she could find, Buffie Johnson published this<br \/>\namazing compendium.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial; mso-themecolor: text1;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>The titular Lady of the<br \/>\nBeasts described in this work is the Great Goddess, the initial over-arching<br \/>\ndeity worshipped by all humans until the advent of patriarchal religions.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>For over 100,000 years, humanity understood<br \/>\nthat the creative principle, that force that brings new life out of death, that<br \/>\nprovides everything needed here on Earth for our sustenance and care, was<br \/>\nfemale.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They understood innately how the<br \/>\nfemale of the species was the progenitor, the one who could create life out of<br \/>\nherself, and seemingly, without the aid of any outside influence.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Millenia before we understood the role of the<br \/>\nmale spermatozoa in procreation, or even realized it mattered, everyone understood<br \/>\nthat the womb of a woman, and by extension, any female animal, was the greatest<br \/>\nmagic in our world.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Not only do women<br \/>\ncreate a new life within them, but they also create water seemingly out of<br \/>\nnowhere.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>In times when water was as rare<br \/>\nand valuable a resource as petroleum is now, seeing a woman\u2019s \u201cwater\u201d break,<br \/>\nreleasing the amniotic fluid built up inside, was as much a miracle as seeing<br \/>\nthe sun rise again after a dark night, or spring arising after months of dead,<br \/>\ncold winter.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Humans understood that life<br \/>\ncame from water, and that death was just part of the eternal cycle.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The very Earth itself, especially caves and<br \/>\ngrottoes heading underground, became symbolic wombs where our planet creates<br \/>\nitself.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial; mso-themecolor: text1;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>The one aspect of women<br \/>\nthat was seen as magical and undeniably related to the cosmos was that of the<br \/>\nmenstrual cycle.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Women experience a new<br \/>\nmenstrual cycle on average every 28 days.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>This directly matches the phases of the Moon, which take 28 days to go<br \/>\nfrom New Moon to New Moon, or Full to Full. This was not treated as<br \/>\ncoincidence, but as divine order, allowing humans to appreciate the divinity<br \/>\ncontained within the females of any species, including us.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Most ancient cultures and civilizations<br \/>\ndivided their year into twelve months of twenty-eight days each, along with a five-day<br \/>\nperiod of holiday at the end of each year.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>This added up to the 365 days we know occur in a year.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Mesopotamians did this, and so did the<br \/>\nMayans, the ancient Chinese, and people throughout Africa.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It only made sense to think of the world, and<br \/>\nthe powers that control it, as female.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial; mso-themecolor: text1;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>When Buffie Johnson<br \/>\nstarted out on the journey to write this book, the world did not consider the<br \/>\nGoddess much.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>We live in a time where<br \/>\ngreat patriarchal religions define our spiritual world.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>From christianity, to islam, judaism,<br \/>\nconfucianism, current faiths centered on male deities abound and shape<br \/>\neverything about the world we share.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>These patriarchal religions are relatively new to our history.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>For tens of thousands of years, the worship<br \/>\nof the Goddess as the giver and taker of life informed our world and helped<br \/>\nexplain the many difficult to understand processes of nature we now study<br \/>\nthrough science.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>What this means in<br \/>\nterms of art history and archeology is that, for the past thousand years of<br \/>\nscientific exploration into our past, everything was coded with patriarchal<br \/>\nideas, ignoring and outright fabricating meaning for objects and myths that did<br \/>\nnot fit in with the idea of a big ol\u2019 male god up in the sky judging and<br \/>\ncontrolling us.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Buffie Johnson\u2019s work in<br \/>\nexploring the Goddess through the relics and art left behind was extra<br \/>\ndifficult, for one of the main jobs of the roman catholic church since their<br \/>\nofficial founding around 300 CE was the destruction of any and all references<br \/>\nto the Mother Goddess, and the supplanting of her festivals and rituals with<br \/>\nhebrew-coded, christian-coded, or islam-coded festivals and rituals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial; mso-themecolor: text1;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>For example, every<br \/>\nancient culture worshipped an aspect of the Goddess called the Grain<br \/>\nGoddess.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This was the power that allows<br \/>\nlife to exist inside seeds, a vitality that only comes to pass once the seeds<br \/>\nare buried in Mother Earth\u2019s womb, the soil, where life springs anew and plants<br \/>\ngrow.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Our current Spring festivals such<br \/>\nas Easter, May Day, Mardi Gras and Passover are replacements for the ancient<br \/>\nGrain Goddess festivals.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>After a long,<br \/>\ncold, seemingly lifeless summer, the people had to propriate the fruitful<br \/>\ncoming harvest by honoring, and sacrificing to, the Grain Goddess.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Around the world, as Buffie Johnson<br \/>\nresearched, the ceremonies remained eerily similar.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>A wagon was created with the image of the<br \/>\nGrain Goddess mounted upon it.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This<br \/>\nwagon, after preparation by the goddess\u2019 priests, was rolled or carried around<br \/>\nthe fields to be planted.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>As part or the<br \/>\nritual, human sacrifices were held, often of a symbolic \u201cKing\u201d who would marry<br \/>\nthe Grain Goddess before the sacrifice.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>After humans stopped being the sacrifice, other animals associated with<br \/>\nthe Goddess would be sacrificed, eventually leading to the yearly sacrifice of<br \/>\na bull.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This ritual was often followed<br \/>\nby a night or a few days of drinking, debauchery and general sexual abandon, as<br \/>\npeople would pair off and have sex in the soon-to-be-planted field, lending<br \/>\ntheir procreational energy to the coming harvest.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was all part of the procreative force.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial; mso-themecolor: text1;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>These types of rituals<br \/>\nsurvived long past the advent of patriarchal religion, but not without<br \/>\nconsiderable effort by those religions to destroy every idol, demolish every temple,<br \/>\nand chop down every sacred wood belonging to the Great Goddess.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The celebration of Easter, where christians<br \/>\nrelive the death of Jesus, his three days in Hell, and his rising again out of<br \/>\nthe grave, used to be a ceremony for Ishtar, or Astarte, both aspects of the<br \/>\nGreat Goddess herself, who also travelled to the underworld to ensure life<br \/>\narose again on Earth.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>In Greece this<br \/>\nlegend was transcribed into the story of Demeter, a grain goddess herself, who<br \/>\ndue to male god shenanigans, was forced to spend half the year in Hades,<br \/>\nreturning for Spring and Summer, and bringing back life and abundance to the<br \/>\nworld.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial; mso-themecolor: text1;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Due to the very<br \/>\nsuccessful propaganda and extermination campaigns, first by the Yahweh-obsessed<br \/>\nhebrews and then by the christians, not much was thought to survive of the<br \/>\nGoddess and her worship, but archeology proceeded to remove their patriarchal<br \/>\nand judeo-christian biases in the mid 1900\u2019s, proceeding to discover and<br \/>\nre-assess many images and temples once dedicated to the Great Goddess.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Bastions of ancient worship such as Catal<br \/>\nHuyuk were discovered, and true scholarship on the Great Goddess began.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Buffie Johnson was ahead of the curve and<br \/>\ncollected information on the available pieces found in museums worldwide, many<br \/>\nof them not associated with the Great Goddess until she reconsidered the<br \/>\nartifacts and symbols found within.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>Starting with the Paleolithic era, Buffie Johnson takes us through a<br \/>\nbestiary unlike any other, sharing with us the visual clues to decipher the<br \/>\nancient art, and to better understand what we are looking at when we see images<br \/>\nof the Great Goddess.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial; mso-themecolor: text1;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>It is evident that much<br \/>\nof the great early developments of humanity came about solely because of<br \/>\nwomen.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The ability to not only cook<br \/>\nfood, but to raise it, harvest it, and save it for future uses came directly<br \/>\nfrom women.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Women created the first<br \/>\nwoven baskets, leading to the weaving of fabric itself.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Women created the loom.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Buffie talks about how women created<br \/>\npottery.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Ancient pottery has been found<br \/>\nwhich shows that the first ceramics were made by pressing clay directly onto<br \/>\nthe outside of a woven basket and hardening it in the flames.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The women\u2019s skill with plants led to their<br \/>\ndevelopment of medicine, or at least the use of natural products to soothe<br \/>\npain, stop itch, or even help intestinal issues.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Because of the complexity involved, it is<br \/>\nalso fairly evident that women created language to disseminate the gathered<br \/>\ninformation to other women.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Most modern<br \/>\ntribal cultures share something with our ancient humanity, and that is the fact<br \/>\nthat some knowledge belongs solely to the women, and only the women will share<br \/>\nit with each other.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Men are not allowed<br \/>\nto know these things, and it has been so for countless millennia.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Menstruation was life incarnate, and due to<br \/>\nthis most tribes have a place for women to go separate from the men while they<br \/>\nmenstruate.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is one of the oldest and<br \/>\nstrictest taboos for males to enter into a woman\u2019s space, and to steal women\u2019s<br \/>\nknowledge.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Up until around 3,000 years<br \/>\nago, most royal lines were matriarchal, something handed down from your<br \/>\nmother\u2019s line.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is still seen in how<br \/>\nbeing jewish is something tracked through the matrilineal line.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>In ancient Egypt, even in the time of male<br \/>\npharaohs, they would routinely marry their sisters, in order to keep the claim<br \/>\nto the throne intact.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>One of the odd<br \/>\ncurrent findings that mirror this matriarchal mentality is that of the source<br \/>\nof mitochondria.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Each of our cells<br \/>\ncontain an organelle called mitochondria.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>This organelle is responsible for the energy usage of the cell,<br \/>\nconverting sugars into electrical impulses, and essentially powering the life<br \/>\nsurrounding it.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Recently, genetic<br \/>\nscientists discovered that every single mitochondrion in our bodies comes from<br \/>\nthe genetic material of the mother.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The<br \/>\nspecific DNA found in mitochondria only comes from the half of your genes<br \/>\nprovided by your mother in her ovum.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Thanks<br \/>\nto this, it is now possible to trace back our collective evolution through the<br \/>\nmitochondria, following matrilineal lines.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>What was found is, sometime around 50,000-60,000 years ago, a female<br \/>\nhuman existed which is the \u201cmother eve\u201d for every single human alive today,<br \/>\nmeaning every human on Earth shares mitochondrial DNA.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is insane news and would have made much<br \/>\nsense to our ancestors who accepted the totality and the invaluable presence of<br \/>\nthe Feminine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial; mso-themecolor: text1;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>The only way we know<br \/>\nabout the Great Goddess and the people who worshipped her is through art, and<br \/>\nmore specifically sculptures, petroglyphs, and ancient ruins, all from a time<br \/>\nbefore the written language was invented.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>As the artists who crafted the artwork did so in a pre-literate society,<br \/>\nvisual symbolism was everything.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Ancient<br \/>\nworks that we have a hard time understanding would have been instantaneously<br \/>\nappreciated by ancient humans who lived with the symbols found within, and who<br \/>\ncould translate the imagery of the specific animals and plants associated with<br \/>\nthe Mother Goddess.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>In order for us<br \/>\n\u201cmodern\u201d humans to understand what has been forgotten, Buffie Johnson did all<br \/>\nthe hard work.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>She begins by describing<br \/>\nthe connection between the Great Goddess and the idea of a bird, the most<br \/>\nsacred of ancient animals.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Part of the<br \/>\ndivinity seen in birds is their ability to fly up into what was always<br \/>\nconsidered the heavens, the abode of the Goddess.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Besides that, the imagery of the bird\u2019s egg,<br \/>\nwith its promise of a whole new life, was developed into the idea of the World<br \/>\nEgg, laid by the Great Goddess when she created all existence from her<br \/>\nprimordial watery chaos.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This idea led<br \/>\nto the development of what are now termed \u201cVenuses\u201d but which were initially<br \/>\nrepresentations of the Great Mother Goddess pregnant with the cosmic world<br \/>\negg.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>These idols, some meant for<br \/>\ncarrying in the hand, and others, like the giant sculptures in Malta, created<br \/>\nto be impressive focal points for a temple of worshippers, helped ancient man<br \/>\nunderstand the giant concepts of eternal life, or birth and death and the<br \/>\nimmutability of both, and of the idea that creation comes from the Feminine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%; tab-stops: list .5in;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial; mso-themecolor: text1;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Following the association of the Goddess with birds, the<br \/>\nassociation with water began.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>As stated<br \/>\nbefore, women create water to carry their babies until delivery.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Humanity always divided the world into three<br \/>\nparts.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The sky above, the earth at our<br \/>\nfeet, and the waters found deep beneath the earth.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The fish found in these waters belonged to<br \/>\nthe Great Goddess just as much as the birds in the air did.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Fish symbolism is everywhere in the ancient<br \/>\nstatues and artwork and has continued into our current modern times.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus is described as a \u201cfisher of men,\u201d and<br \/>\nhis Greek acrostic, \u201cIchthys\u201d meaning fish, supposedly stands in for Jesus. Each<br \/>\nletter of <b>\u0399\u03a7\u0398\u03a5\u03a3<\/b> (the Greek word) stands for a word in the core Christian<br \/>\nconfession: <b>I<\/b> (Iota): <i>I\u0113sous<\/i> (Jesus) <b>Ch<\/b> (Chi): <i>Christos<\/i><br \/>\n(Christ) <b>Th<\/b> (Theta): <i>Theou<\/i> (of God) <b>Y<\/b> (Upsilon): <i>Huios<\/i><br \/>\n(Son) and <b>S<\/b> (Sigma): <i>S\u014dt\u0113r<\/i> (Savior).<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is why people put the fish symbol on<br \/>\ntheir cars, standing in for Jesus.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is<br \/>\nnot from the Bible, but instead an appropriation by early church fathers to<br \/>\nsupplant the idea of the Great Goddess and her fish symbolism.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Pathetic.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>The real sad part is that the fish was an ancient symbol of the<br \/>\nandrogyny, or hermaphroditism, of deities.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>The pointy end of the fish stood for the phallus and the split tail of<br \/>\nthe fish stood for the shape of the vulva.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>Perhaps Jesus was a hermaphrodite?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>Who knows? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%; tab-stops: list .5in;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial; mso-themecolor: text1;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>One of the most ancient animal symbols of the Great<br \/>\nGoddess, apart from birds and fish, is the lion.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>In lions the female is the leader, and the<br \/>\nfemales do all the hunting and baby-rearing.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>In honor of this, and of the strong feminine power evident, the lion<br \/>\nbecame one of the goddess animals.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>Paleolithic art showing the Great Goddess flanked by two lions is found<br \/>\nall over Europe, a continent where the lion became extinct thousands of years<br \/>\nago.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Once the lion became extinct, the<br \/>\ndog took over the role as protector and guardian of the Great Goddess.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Dogs have always been connected to the Moon,<br \/>\ndue to their nocturnal howling, and it only makes sense for them to be<br \/>\nassociated with the Great Goddess.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Gods<br \/>\nwere seen as intermediaries between life and death, with many ancient people\u2019s<br \/>\nbelieving that dogs helped guide dead souls to the afterlife realm of the<br \/>\nGoddess.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The role of Anubis in ancient<br \/>\nEgyptian religion was a similar one, a hold-over from earlier matriarchal Great<br \/>\nGoddess worship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%; tab-stops: list .5in;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial; mso-themecolor: text1;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>I could spend hours talking about everything covered in<br \/>\nthis amazing masterpiece of art and archeological history.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Buffie Johnson created a book that has helped<br \/>\nopen my eyes.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I am now armed with<br \/>\nknowledge and ready to look at ancient artwork with a new eye.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The symbols and allegories are in my head and<br \/>\nI am so grateful.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I feel almost drunk<br \/>\nwith knowledge, one of my all-time favorite sensations.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Buffie Johnson researched and wrote this book<br \/>\nwhile living the life of an eminent artist, creating and showing work in<br \/>\ngalleries and museums worldwide.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>She is<br \/>\na great inspiration to me and to anyone drawn to complex ideas and
