And I certainly don\u2019t want to defend the nationalist political agenda<\/span><em> <\/em><span>which Vance has in mind in making this argument. Instead, I just want to make two simple interventions on the fundamental moral question at issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>First, the idea that we owe more to friends and family than we do to strangers is <\/span><em>obvious <\/em><span>and <\/span><em>commonplace <\/em><span>among diverse moral traditions. You owe things to your child that you don\u2019t owe to your neighbor\u2019s child, like feeding them regularly or providing them with an education. And you probably owe things to your neighbor\u2019s child that you don\u2019t owe to a complete stranger, like watching after them when they\u2019re playing in front of your house.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>All of this is so obvious that one of the main <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/utilitarianism.net\/objections-to-utilitarianism\/special-obligations\/\">objections to utilitarianism<\/a><span> as a moral theory is that it seems on its face to be incompatible with such special obligations. (Utilitarians, for their part, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/plato.stanford.edu\/entries\/special-obligations\/#SpecObliCons\">typically scramble<\/a><span> to show that no, actually if you just understand the theory correctly, you actually can get to the conclusion that it\u2019s OK to sometimes spend money on your own family). In other words, the idea that we have special obligations to friends and family is one of the fixed judgments that we used to test whether a moral theory makes sense. It\u2019s not controversial; it\u2019s bedrock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The second point is this: the fact that we owe more to friends and family than we do to strangers doesn\u2019t imply that we owe <\/span><em>nothing <\/em><span>to strangers. It doesn\u2019t imply, contra Scott Alexander, that we should simply let them die. X &gt; Y does not imply that Y = 0.<\/span><span style=\"min-width:0;\" data-state=\"closed\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span>This means that those of us with more cosmopolitan (or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.effectivealtruism.org\">Effective Altruist<\/a><span>) leanings don\u2019t need to reject Vance\u2019s basic point. It\u2019s OK to save up tens of thousands of dollars to pay for your own children\u2019s education, and not to do this for other people\u2019s kids. It\u2019s OK to buy your wife an anniversary present, and not to give anything at all to your neighbor\u2019s wife.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But it doesn\u2019t follow from this that it\u2019s OK to keep out foreign immigrants in order to prevent a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cato.org\/cato-journal\/fall-2017\/does-immigration-reduce-wages#conclusion\">small decrease in wages<\/a><span> for some domestic workers. Or that it\u2019s OK to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a luxury car when that money could have been used to save many, many lives. Even if we\u2019re not required to care as much for <\/span><em>them <\/em><span>as we do for <\/span><em>us<\/em><span>, at some point the benefits for <\/span><em>us <\/em><span>become so small, or the costs to <\/span><em>them <\/em><span>become so large, that the scales tip. Figuring out where exactly that point lies is tricky. But figuring out that it exists is not.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, Vice President J.D.
