You do, however, need to meet that country\u2019s immigration requirements. These may include minimum income rules, health insurance, proof of remote employment, accommodation and background checks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, being good at Teams meetings is not technically a visa category.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">*Important to note:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Before researching destinations, check whether your employer allows employees to work from another country.<\/strong> Many organisations have policies that restrict international remote work because of tax, payroll, immigration, data security and employment law considerations. This is worth confirming early, before you get attached to a country.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Can South Africans apply for digital nomad visas?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes. Most of these programmes are open to applicants from outside the EU, South African passport holders included.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll usually need:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Proof of remote work<\/li>\n<li>A qualifying income<\/li>\n<li>Your employer\u2019s permission<\/li>\n<li>Bank statements or payslips<\/li>\n<li>Health insurance<\/li>\n<li>Proof of accommodation<\/li>\n<li>A police clearance certificate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meeting the minimum income doesn\u2019t guarantee approval. Immigration authorities remain stubbornly unimpressed by good vibes.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Digital nomad visa options for South Africans<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Portugal.\u00a0 D8 Digital Nomad Visa<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Minimum income: around <strong>R70,000 a month<\/strong> (about \u20ac3,680, roughly $4,195), before tax. Your work and income must come from outside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/lp\/cheap-flights-to-portugal\">Portugal<\/a>, a South African salary counts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The permit runs for two years initially and renews in three-year stretches after that. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Best for:<\/strong> remote workers after a genuinely long-term European base. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The catch:<\/strong> your income has to be entirely foreign to Portugal.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Spain. Digital Nomad Visa<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Minimum income: around <strong>R54,000 a month<\/strong> (about $3,248), roughly 200% of Spain\u2019s minimum wage. Freelancers may work with Spanish clients, but local work can\u2019t exceed 20% of total activity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll also need a recognised qualification or at least three years of relevant experience.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Best for:<\/strong> experienced remote professionals who\u2019d like their lunch break served with tapas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The catch:<\/strong> You\u2019ll need proof that your employer signed off on you working in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/lp\/countries\/spain-flights\">Spain<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Malta. Nomad Residence Permit<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Minimum income: around <strong>R67,000 a month<\/strong> (\u20ac42,000 a year gross). Your first year of foreign income is tax-free. After that, it drops to a flat 10%, one of the better long-term setups on this list. Thank you, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/lp\/countries\/malta-flights\">Malta<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Best for:<\/strong> higher earners wanting an English-speaking European base.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The catch:<\/strong> the permit can\u2019t be used to work for Maltese companies or clients.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Croatia. Digital Nomad Visa<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Minimum income: around <strong>R69,000 a month<\/strong> (\u20ac3,622.50), or savings of roughly R830,000 to cover the stay. Foreign income stays completely tax-exempt for the full permit and you can stay for up to 18 months in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/lp\/countries\/croatia-flights\">Croatia<\/a>, longer than most on this list.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Best for:<\/strong> anyone whose ideal office background includes the Adriatic Sea.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The catch:<\/strong> you can\u2019t work for Croatian employers or clients.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Estonia. Digital Nomad Visa<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Minimum income: around <strong>R86,000 a month gross<\/strong>, the highest threshold here. The permit runs for one year and doesn\u2019t renew, so you\u2019ll need to leave <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/lp\/countries\/estonia-flights\">Estonia<\/a> and the Schengen area once it\u2019s up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0<strong>Best for:<\/strong> tech professionals who want a fast Northern European base.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The catch:<\/strong> Estonia\u2019s e-Residency programme is a different thing entirely and doesn\u2019t give you permission to live there.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>United Arab Emirates. Virtual Working Programme<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Minimum income: around <strong>R59,000 a month<\/strong> ($3,500). Tax-free, one-year residency, renewable annually, no local business licence required.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Best for:<\/strong> remote workers who want excellent flight connections and air conditioning with ambition in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/lp\/cheap-flights-to-dubai\">Dubai<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The catch:<\/strong> freelancers should confirm which specific route applies to them before applying, the official programme is built primarily around remote employees.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mauritius. Premium Visa<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Minimum income: just <strong>R25,000 a month<\/strong> ($1,500), the easiest by a wide margin. No degree, no minimum experience, and approval in as little as one to two weeks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Best for: <\/strong>first-time digital nomads who\u2019d prefer their new office view to be a short flight from home. <strong>The catch:<\/strong> your main income and work still needs to come from outside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/lp\/cheap-flights-to-mauritius\">Mauritius<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not a Digital Nomad Visa but worth knowing about<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Portugal. D7 Visa (the no-job-needed route)<\/h4>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Minimum income: around <strong>R17,500 a month<\/strong>, from a pension, rental income, dividends or other passive sources. No job required at all.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Built for retirees and anyone living off assets rather than a paycheck, and by far the lowest bar on this list. <strong>Best for:<\/strong> people who\u2019ve already stopped working or want to.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The catch:<\/strong> it has to be genuinely passive income, not a disguised freelance hustle.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Do you need employer sponsorship?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Usually not from a foreign company. But your current employer may need to confirm that:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your role can be done remotely<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019re allowed to work from the destination<\/li>\n<li>Your employment will continue<\/li>\n<li>Your income meets the visa requirements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So perhaps speak to HR before appearing in the Monday meeting from Lisbon.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Will you pay tax abroad?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Possibly. A digital nomad visa gives you immigration permission, it doesn\u2019t automatically settle your tax position.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tax may depend on:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How long you stay<\/li>\n<li>Where your employer is based<\/li>\n<li>Where you physically perform the work<\/li>\n<li>Whether you remain tax resident in South Africa<\/li>\n<li>Any double-tax agreement in place<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speak to a qualified tax adviser before working remotely from another country. TikTok is many things.
