Together with Travel Bloggers Greece<\/a>, my family visited one of the most evocative archaeological sites in the world. <\/p>\n Mycenae is located in the Argolis, Peloponnese. Along with the Minoan civilization, the Mycenaean civilization<\/a> ranks among the greatest civilizations of Europe. Mycenaean Greece<\/strong>\u00a0or the\u00a0Mycenaean civilization<\/strong> was the last phase of the\u00a0Bronze Age\u00a0in\u00a0Ancient Greece<\/a>, spanning the period from approximately 1600\u20131100 BC. <\/p>\n It represents the first advanced and distinctively\u00a0Greek civilization\u00a0in mainland\u00a0Greece<\/a>\u00a0with its palatial states, urban organization, works of art, and writing system.\u00a0The most prominent site was\u00a0Mycenae, after which the culture of this era is named.\u00a0<\/p>\n The \u201cgolden\u201d city of Mycenae, the city of the legendary king Atreus and Agamemnon, the one that was cited by Hommer and excavated by Eric Sleeman, is one of the most important and most famous archaeological sites of Greece.\u00a0<\/p>\n The moment you arrive at the Mycenae archaeological site, you\u2019ll be blown away by the magnificent Lion Gate <\/strong>and its enormous relief sculpture.\u00a0<\/p>\n The rest of the site really shows off the impressive architecture of the Mycenaeans. Trust me \u2013 your kids will be captivated with every step of your visit. <\/p>\n Besides the impressive majestic,\u00a0Lions Gate<\/strong>, at the entrance of the Mycenaean citadel, you will also see the royal complex<\/strong> and the\u00a0six royal tombs<\/strong>, in the\u00a01st tomb ring<\/strong>\u00a0(16th cent. B.C.), the\u00a0grenary, temples and houses<\/strong>, in the citadel. The\u00a02nd tomb ring<\/strong>, with the vaulted tombs (14 royal and 12 private), outside the citadel. <\/p>\n Do not miss the treasury of Atreus<\/strong>\u00a0or the tomb of Agamemnon<\/strong>\u00a0(13th cent. B.C.), a grandiose tomb, near the citadel.<\/p>\n The\u00a0Treasury of Atreus<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0Tomb of Agamemnon<\/strong>\u00a0is a large\u00a0tholos<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0beehive tomb\u00a0on the Panagitsa Hill near the main Mycenae site, constructed during the\u00a0Bronze Age\u00a0around 1250 BC. The mysterious tomb can be visited inside. The tomb perhaps held the remains of the sovereign who completed the reconstruction of the fortress or one of his successors. The grave is in the style of the other\u00a0tholoi<\/em>\u00a0of\u00a0Mycenaean Greece<\/a>, of which there are nine in total around the citadel of Mycenae and many more in the\u00a0Argolid<\/a>. <\/p>\n My kids loved its mysterious shape and grandeur. The Treasury of Atreus is one of the most impressive monuments surviving from the Mycenaean period.<\/p>\n The rich finds from the area (crowns, wall paintings, the golden mask of \u201cAgamemnon\u201d, and others) are on display in the beautiful museum on the site. <\/p>\n The museum displays lots of kid friendly information boards and maps, as well as an interesting photo exhibition of the archaeological excavations. <\/p>\n Mycenae is a must-visit for anyone visiting Greece. Kids will love the Cyclopean masonry, the gold mask of Agamemnon and the Lion Gate at the entrance of Mycenae. <\/p>\n To make the most out of your visit to Mycenae, I recommend a guided tour. Our state-licensed guide truly brought the ancient site to life and made our visit to the museum extra interesting.<\/p>\n You can visit Mycenae from Athens by car via the Greek National Road from Corinth to Tripolis. After the Corinth canal, you need to follow the route towards Nafplion and Mycenae. The distance between Athens and Mycenae is about 130 km.<\/p>\n To visit Mycenae Greece with kids, I recommend a (guided) organized tour. These tours include skip-the-line tickets and start from Athens or Nafplion<\/a>. They combine a relaxed visit to Mycenae with a tour in Epidaurus<\/a> and\/or Nafplion.
