People we trusted have lied to us. Whether it\u2019s the media, the government, our religious leaders or even family and friends\u2026 Someone we trusted has let us down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sadly, that goes with being human. And none of us are immune.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But what can we do? Once we realize that there is literally no one we can wholeheartedly, blindly trust, do we just give up and \u201ccome what may?\u201d Do we lash out in anger and, if so, will that solve our problems? Or do we roll up our sleeves and search for answers on our own? If you\u2019re like me, the answer is irrefutable: We don\u2019t give up and we don\u2019t give in. We try. And we do our best, recognizing that it will be imperfect, but that the results will be far superior to anything else on offer.<\/p>\n

Finding a Solution<\/b><\/h3>\n

As we search for answers, I believe there is only one thing in this world that we can<\/em> trust. Only one thing that we should<\/em> trust. And no, it\u2019s not me!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yep. You guessed it. It\u2019s the Bible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now don\u2019t stop reading!<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not here to tell you to just \u201cGive it up and give it to God.\u201d And, if you don\u2019t know God or trust the Bible, that\u2019s OK too. (Just skip to the end of this article for resources to help you decide whether the rest is worth reading.)<\/p>\n

But for those who do<\/i> believe that God is real and that the Bible is trustworthy, I\u2019ve got some good news \u2013 we can use the Bible to\u00a0seek, and find, the Truth for ourselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s get practical: The purpose of this article is to show you how you can use the Bible to find answers on your own.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

So let\u2019s find out what God has to say to you!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s start with a problem many of us have wondered how to solve: How to get along with an impossible person. What I\u2019m going to show you is how to \u201cask\u201d the Bible that question. And no, we aren\u2019t going to rely on experts, and what they think the Bible says or what it means. We are going to go directly to the source and ask the Bible itself!<\/p>\n

Open Bible \u2013 <\/strong>Go to <\/span>https:\/\/www.openbible.info\/topics\/<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"In this example, we might start with<\/span> the key word search <\/span>\u201cgetting along with impossible people.\u201d <\/span>The Open Bible search engine will return specific verses that are related to those key words. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Read over the verses that are suggested. Do any of them resonate with you? Jot them down for the next step.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For me, Ephesians 4:2-3 felt like the most direct response for what I\u2019m wondering when I ask this question.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dig In!<\/b><\/h3>\n

First, check your understanding. Are you interpreting the verse the way the author intended? You read that right. Even when something is written in plain English; even when its meaning seems clear\u2026.<\/p>\n

Bear with me a sec\u2026 Have you ever sent someone a message and they got it all wrong? Did it feel like they hadn\u2019t even read what you wrote?! It happens to all of us! Or maybe you received a message and the sender PUT EVERYTHING IN CAPS. It\u2019s stressful right? Like maybe the situation is urgent. Or maybe you somehow offended them. \u00a0Or\u2026. Maybe\u2026 Caps Lock was on and the sender just didn\u2019t realize it.<\/p>\n

The truth is, when we can\u2019t see each other\u2019s facial expressions or hear tone of voice, it\u2019s no surprise there will be misunderstandings. And when you add cultural, historical, and language barriers (because we know that the Bible was written by non-English-speaking men from a long, long time ago)\u2026 it\u2019s bordering on crazy to think we could understand the Bible just by reading the words that have been translated into English for us. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Am I saying that you can\u2019t trust your Bible? No. What I\u2019m saying is; \u201cIt\u2019s not that simple.\u201d We gotta do some work if we want to understand for ourselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Let me prove it to you\u2026 take the word \u201clove.\u201d We all know what \u201clove\u201d means. But when we read \u201cbearing with one another in love,\u201d in Ephesians 4:2, does \u201clove\u201d refer to a feeling inside our hearts? Or does it mean we are supposed to act in a specific way toward others?\u00a0<\/span>And if it\u2019s both, how do we know if the author meant \u201clove\u201d in the way that I love my husband? Or could he have been talking about the kind of love I have for my sister? Or what about my chiropractor \u2013 because I \u201clove\u201d the way he can crack the kink in my upper neck.\u00a0<\/span>All kidding aside, you see what I mean, right? We can\u2019t just take the words at face value and assume we are clear on what the author intended.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now what if I told you that the letter to the Ephesians was originally written in Greek? And then, hundreds of years later, someone translated it into English so that you and I could understand it? AND, did you know that the Greek language has 4 different words for \u201clove;\u201d eros, agape, philia, and storge?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Hmm\u2026 Maybe we <\/span>can<\/em><\/span> get a better understanding of what the author meant in Ephesians 4:2. <\/span><\/p>\n

But how do I know which Greek word for love was written?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The good news is that you can<\/i> find out. And you don\u2019t have to know how to speak (or even read) Greek to do it!<\/p>\n

Bible Hub \u2013 <\/b>Go to https:\/\/biblehub.com\/interlinear<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span>In the top navigation bar, select the book, chapter a<\/span>nd then verse. <\/span>In this case, Ephesians 4:2.<\/span> Then click on \u201cINT\u201d (on a MAC or PC, it will show as \u201cInterlin\u201d). This lets you see each English word and the corresponding Greek word that was in the original letter.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a reminder, we\u2019re trying to figure out what Ephesians means when it\u2019s telling us to \u201clove\u201d others. And we need to understand that<\/i> before we can decide if this passage has an answer for \u201cgetting along with impossible people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

If you scroll to the bottom of the Bible Hub page, you will see the word \u201clove.\u201d Above<\/span>\"\"<\/span>\u00a0that, we <\/span>see the author used the Greek word \u201cagape\u201d (pronounced agap\u0113) .<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>OK\u2026 so what does THAT mean? Are we talking\u00a0<\/span>chiropractor kind of love; because I need to \u201cbe kind to the people who do things I really want, like, or need\u201d? Or is it sisterly kind of love, because I should \u201cconsider everyone as family\u201d? Certainly it doesn\u2019t mean the husbandly kind of love?! Because\u2026 well\u2026 surely one husband is more than enough. <\/span>\ud83e\udd23.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span>To find out what agape means, touch\/click on the number 26 above its Greek pronunciation. On the new page that launches, you will see a basic definition of agape.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But in order to really understand how a Greek-speaking person in ancient times meant \u201cagape,\u201d you\u2019re going to have to dig a little deeper. Scroll down and find the HELPS Word-studies. <\/span>\"\"<\/span>It\u2019s not just love, but the kind of love that \u201ccenters in moral <\/span>preference.\u201d Huh? What is that<\/i>?! Good news, we can scroll down the webpage and find out how the experts translate agape (Thayer\u2019s Greek Concordance); we can read how agape was translated into English from other passages in the Bible (Englishman\u2019s Concordance); and we can dig way deep and see all 116 places agape was used in the Bible!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Eventually, even if I just skim those other passages, I catch on that agape (or having a moral preference for others) mean<\/span>s the kind of love that puts others\u2019 interests before my own. It\u2019s a sacrificial kind of love. Perfect love. The kind of love that God has. In fact, we learn that God <\/span>is<\/em><\/span> agape. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hmm\u2026 If I try to see my \u201cimpossible\u201d people the way that God does (and the way that God sees imperfect little me), what used to feel annoying becomes a curiosity: What might that person see (or know) that I am overlooking?<\/span> And when <\/span><\/span>I try to imagine loving impossible people like God does, I begin to think maybe those other people aren\u2019t<\/i> actually impossible. Sigh\u2026 Maybe I<\/i> am the problem \u2013 because I\u2019m insisting on my own way?!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You get the idea: When I dug a littler deeper, Ephesians 4:2 proved quite helpful for getting along with the impossible people in my life. But p<\/span>erhaps you don\u2019t agree. Maybe you looked at all the words in Ephesians 4:2-3 and, at the end of it, still don\u2019t feel it helped you with your dilemma. No problem! Set Ephesians 4:2-3 aside and go back to Open Bible to see if there is a different Scripture passage that seems to better address your situation. Once you find a new passage, use the interlinear translation in Bible Hub to dig into that <\/i>verse.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re still not finding a passage in Open Bible that is useful, tweak the keywords you\u2019re searching on. In this case, if \u201cgetting along with impossible people\u201d isn\u2019t yielding good results, rephrase your issue. Perhaps \u201cdealing with selfish people\u201d or \u201cforgiving someone who hurt me\u201d would better describe your context.<\/p>\n

Keep at it and you will get better at phrasing your Open Bible topic searches. In no time, you will feel (and actually be) confident about your ability to uncover God\u2019s answers for the things you struggle with here on earth. And most importantly, you will be getting answers directly from the Bible itself. Not some well-meaning person like me, who doesn\u2019t (and can\u2019t) completely understand your perspective or the problems you\u2019re facing.<\/span><\/p>\n
