In my travels this summer, yellow fields of flowering canola dominated the landscape. While the flowering period this summer was adversely affected by a spike in temperatures it may have been less than in previous years. While there were some high temperatures during the flowering period, they weren’t as extensive as in previous years, definitely not as extreme as back in 2021, when yields were extensively harmed by the relentless heat.

The cool, wet spring certainly benefited livestock producers as I saw hay fields filled with bales. In conversations with some farmers, they indicated that their hay production was so plentiful that they would have more feed than their current number of cattle would need. This may indicate that some farmers will keep more heifers over this fall, expanding herd sizes due to the abundant moisture that also benefited their pasture fields. While it will take another two years for the increase in herd size to potentially contribute to reducing meat prices in grocery stores, the increase of herd sizes from 40-year lows is a positive sign.

The wet spring certainly hindered many farmers from being able to easily seed wet fields. Some early estimates indicated that tens of thousands of acres of land were unable to be seeded this year in wetter parts of the Prairies. This is very unfortunate and such a dramatic turn around from recent drought situations. Some early harvest results from exceptionally wet parts of Manitoba indicate yields well below average. This certainly illustrates how quickly crop production conditions can change from one year to the next, just like they always have.

The removal of Chinese tariffs on Canadian canola exports at the start of the year seems to have had a positive impact on canola acreage this crop year.
