Buyers should review the full contract and total amount financed before signing – Shutterstock

A car dealer quotes a monthly payment that fits the budget, the numbers look reasonable, and suddenly the conversation moves toward signing paperwork. That is exactly where buyers need to slow down, because a monthly payment can hide what actually sits inside the loan. In a recent case, the Federal Trade Commission accused three Texas dealerships owned by Asbury Automotive of using a tactic called “payment packing,” in which customers agreed to a monthly payment higher than necessary, and the dealerships allegedly used the difference to add unwanted products to the contract.

The allegation sounds complicated until the basic trick comes into focus: focus the customer on the payment instead of the price. A few dollars here and there can make an expensive add-on feel almost invisible when someone thinks only about what comes out of a checking account each month.

The Monthly Payment Can Hide More Than the Car

The monthly payment on an auto loan can include the vehicle cost, interest, and other charges that the buyer agrees to finance. Optional products such as GAP insurance, credit insurance, extended warranties, or vehicle service contracts can also get folded into the loan, which means the buyer can end up paying interest on those products too.

That makes the payment itself a lousy place to start when checking whether a deal makes sense. A payment of $600 does not reveal whether the buyer financed a $30,000 vehicle with reasonable fees or a vehicle surrounded by a pile of products and charges that nobody clearly discussed. The better question is simple: What exactly makes up this payment?

Watch for the “How Much a Month?” Detour

Payment packing works because monthly affordability can distract from the total transaction. The FTC says the Asbury dealerships allegedly convinced consumers to agree to monthly payments larger than needed for the agreed-upon vehicle price, then used that extra room to add products to the sales contract.

That is why buyers should establish the vehicle’s actual price, financing terms, and desired down payment before getting hypnotized by a monthly number. If a salesperson keeps steering the conversation back to “What payment works for you?” while the total price remains fuzzy, it deserves a closer look. A comfortable payment can still finance a very uncomfortable amount of money.

Scan the Contract for Products Nobody Ordered

The easiest red flag often sits right in front of the buyer: an itemized charge that never appeared in the earlier conversation. Common add-ons include GAP insurance, service contracts, extended warranties, paint or fabric protection and other dealer products, and the FTC specifically warns buyers to make sure the final contract lists only the add-ons they agreed to purchase.

A buyer should compare the final paperwork with the deal discussed earlier, line by line if necessary. If a mysterious protection package suddenly appears, ask what it covers, what it costs and when the buyer agreed to it. “It’s already included” should never end the conversation when the charge represents something the buyer did not request.

A Tiny Signature Box Can Conceal a Big Problem

Electronic paperwork creates another potential headache because a signature screen may not show every term sitting inside the document. In its action against Asbury, the FTC alleged that some consumers signed electronically on screens showing where they needed to sign rather than displaying the full terms, making unwanted charges harder to spot before the transaction ended.

That does not mean every electronic signature system creates a problem, but it does give buyers a very practical reason to ask for the complete contract. Read the actual document before signing rather than relying on a salesperson’s verbal summary of what it contains. If something looks different from what the buyer negotiated, stop and ask for a correction before putting a signature on the page.

“Required” and “Optional” Are Very Different Words

Many dealership add-ons can sound less optional once the financing conversation begins, but the CFPB says extended warranties, GAP insurance, and credit insurance generally are optional products. A dealer or lender generally cannot require a buyer to purchase those products simply to obtain an auto loan.

That distinction deserves attention because “You need this for financing” is a much bigger statement than “You might want this protection.” If a dealer claims an add-on is mandatory, ask where the contract says that requirement applies and verify the information with the lender if necessary. A buyer can also shop around because the dealership does not necessarily offer the only source or best price for these products.

Check the Total Cost, Not Just the Damage to the Wallet Each Month

A buyer who negotiates a car down to an attractive payment can still miss the bigger picture if the loan stretches over a long period. Optional products increase the amount financed, and financing those products means interest can increase the total cost as well.

Before signing, compare the amount financed with the negotiated vehicle price and the legitimate taxes and fees. Then look for every separate product, service, or protection plan that increases the balance. The payment may look pleasantly harmless, but the total amount financed has nowhere to hide.

The Best Defense Happens Before the Signature

The strongest move does not involve arguing across a dealership desk after the paperwork has already appeared. Buyers can ask for the out-the-door price in writing, arrange financing independently before shopping when possible, and decide in advance which add-ons they actually want. The FTC specifically recommends getting the total cost in writing and comparing financing options rather than concentrating only on the monthly payment.

Then comes the least glamorous but most valuable part of buying a car: reading the paperwork. Every unfamiliar charge deserves an explanation, every unwanted add-on deserves removal, and every number should match what the buyer agreed to pay. The dealership may have a shiny showroom, a very persuasive finance office, and coffee that somehow tastes like it has been negotiating its own contract, but none of that changes what belongs in the buyer’s paperwork.

Let the Contract Tell the Story

The FTC’s current enforcement activity shows that hidden add-ons and payment packing are not imaginary concerns, although allegations in pending cases do not establish that every accused practice occurred as alleged. The practical lesson is much simpler than the legal proceedings: never judge a car deal by the monthly payment alone. Look at the vehicle price, amount financed, interest rate, fees and every add-on before signing. If an item appears that nobody discussed, stop the transaction and ask for an explanation or removal rather than assuming it must belong there. A few extra minutes with the contract can reveal far more than another hour spent negotiating over the payment.

Would a hidden add-on make you walk away from a dealership, or would you stay and negotiate the charge out of the deal?

You May Also Like…

6 Hidden Travel Fees the FTC Says Consumers Should Watch Before Booking a Trip

7 Things You Should Never Let a Car Dealer Talk You Into Because You’re Focused on the Monthly Payment

8 Car Dealership Tricks That Cost You Thousands

10 Tricks Car Dealers Hope You’ll Never Discover

3 Reasons Traditional Car Dealerships Are on Their Way Out

The post Car Dealers Were Caught Packing Hidden Add-Ons Into Monthly Payments: Here’s How to Spot It in Your Contract appeared first on Clever Dude Personal Finance & Money.

A monthly car payment can conceal optional products such as GAP insurance, service contracts and other add-ons.
