Every boutique consulting firm wants to be seen as an authority. But most skip a stage that makes authority possible.<\/p>\n

That stage is choosing what to be known for<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Think about it.<\/p>\n

Most consulting firms start by saying yes to every type of client and project.<\/p>\n

Because at the beginning, it\u2019s about survival.<\/p>\n

But what keeps you alive at that early stage is the same thing that keeps you stuck later.<\/p>\n

You survive, but you hit a ceiling you can\u2019t explain.<\/p>\n

Clients and even employees use different words to describe what the firm does.<\/p>\n

Content and marketing channels underperform because you try to talk to too many client types about too many problems.<\/p>\n

Buyers push back on price because they don\u2019t see your firm as the specialist.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the Commodity stage.<\/p>\n

Most firms stay here for years.<\/p>\n

They try to jump to the Authority stage with more content and visibility.<\/p>\n

But it never works.<\/p>\n

Because first, they have to go through the Differentiated stage.<\/p>\n

Instead of adding, they have to cut out things:<\/p>\n
