If something matters, we\u2019re told, we should give ourselves to it fully. No hedging. No hesitation. Just focus, discipline, and resolve.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But devotion isn\u2019t automatically wise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Held too tightly, devotion closes us off. It turns care into control. Attention narrows, feedback fades, and the very thing we\u2019re devoted to begins to crowd out everything else that once gave it meaning. The danger isn\u2019t distraction\u2014it\u2019s devotion that stops being examined.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, attention without devotion doesn\u2019t remain neutral. When we don\u2019t choose what deserves our care, something else does. <a href=\"https:\/\/mikevardy.com\/overwhelming-you-2\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"774741\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Urgency steps in.<\/a> Noise fills the space. Attention drifts not because we\u2019re careless, but because we never gave it a place to return to.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The real work lives in between. Devotion that\u2019s alive. Commitment that can be revisited without being abandoned. Attention that\u2019s anchored, but not trapped. This is less about managing time and more about relating to it\u2014about noticing where our attention goes, and why.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That noticing? <em>That\u2019s<\/em> where depth begins.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>If this idea resonates, I explore it (and others like it) more deeply in The Lantern, my weekly letter on time, attention, and the quiet shift from productivity to productiveness.
