The father who quietly managed one of soccer’s greatest careers has died at only 68. His final months were intensely private, although his son’s tears had already revealed how serious the family crisis had become.

Jorge Horacio Messi died on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at Sanatorio Centro in Rosario, Argentina. Lionel Andrés Messi rushed home for a closely guarded farewell, less than two months after his family was forced to deny the very announcement it is now mourning.

According to Clarín, Jorge had been fighting cancer for several months before his death. Other reports and the medical facility described his condition only as a prolonged illness.

The distinction matters because the Messi family had worked hard to keep the exact nature of his health problems private. Even after announcing his death, Sanatorio Centro declined to disclose further medical information.

But the facility later revealed that Jorge died at 2 a.m., issuing a statement shortly after 10 a.m. on Saturday, with medical director Carlos Mackey confirming his age and offering condolences to those closest to him.

“We stand with his family and loved ones during this difficult time and offer our deepest condolences,” Dr. Mackey said in a statement translated from Spanish.

He added, “In compliance with current regulations regarding patient data protection, and out of respect for the family’s privacy, no further details regarding the medical circumstances of his passing will be provided.”

The farewell began Saturday night at El Prado cemetery, located along Route 33 west of Rosario in Santa Fe Province. The intimate ceremony is set to continue this Sunday morning and is expected to conclude around noon.

Lionel Messi and his wife Antonela Roccuzzo arrived at Islas Malvinas International Airport following the death of his father and longtime agent, Jorge Messi, on August 8, 2026, in Rosario, Argentina. | Source: Getty Images

Organizers maintained tight security around the gathering. They also asked members of the press not to use drones, allowing the family to say goodbye without aerial cameras hovering over the cemetery.

Jorge’s wife, Celia Cuccittini, and their children, Lionel, Rodrigo, Matías, and María Sol, faced the loss together. For them, he was more than the businessman the public occasionally saw accompanying the world-famous player.

He was the family leader who had spent decades handling the pressure surrounding Lionel’s career while keeping his own voice largely outside the spotlight.

Concern over Jorge’s condition had followed Lionel throughout the 2026 World Cup in the United States. The family was usually visible together at major tournaments, so Jorge’s absence became especially noticeable.

Antonela Roccuzzo attended with the couple’s sons, Thiago, Mateo, and Ciro, but images of the wider Messi family were unusually scarce. That missing presence took on new meaning when Lionel became emotional during Argentina’s opening match.

Antonela Roccuzzo and her sons Mateo and Thiago cheered on Lionel Messi from the stands as they celebrated at the end of the World Cup semi-final match between England and Argentina at Atlanta Stadium on July 15, 2026, in Atlanta, Georgia. | Source: Getty Images

The 39-year-old forward cried after scoring the first goal and later completed his first World Cup hat trick. Those three goals against Algeria brought him level with Germany’s Miroslav Klose on a record 16 career World Cup goals.

When asked why he had reacted so strongly, Lionel made clear that soccer was not responsible.

“It is because of something completely unrelated to sports. I went through some difficult, complicated days,” he said, according to La Nación. “I am grateful to the entire delegation, which, as always, was by my side.”

Those words acknowledged the strain without exposing his father’s diagnosis. The uncertainty remained over the tournament as Argentina advanced to the July 19 final, where the team lost to Spain.

Jorge died less than three weeks later. Lionel’s club, Inter Miami CF, had been scheduled to play a team from Monterrey, Mexico, in Miami on Saturday night. The club responded publicly to the news with a brief message of support. “Our hearts are with our captain, Leo, and the entire Messi family,” they wrote, as reported by NBC News.

Players and match officials observed a minute of silence to honor the memory of Lionel Messi’s father, Jorge Messi. Argentine television host Florencia Peña incorrectly announced during a live broadcast that he had died.

Florencia was hosting “El Show del Verano” on Luzu TV when a producer allegedly delivered the false report through her earpiece. She repeated it without verification, sending an alarming claim into public circulation while the Messi family was dealing with a genuine medical crisis.

The family quickly clarified that Jorge was alive, receiving medical care, and making favorable progress considering his condition. It also warned that only immediate relatives had accurate information about his health.

Florencia subsequently resigned from the show and accepted part of the responsibility. “I accept that I am partly to blame for this mistake, and that is why I decided to step aside and end my participation on Luzu,” she wrote. “I offer my heartfelt apologies. I was wrong.”

She also addressed the family directly.

“I apologize to the Messi family for the terrible ordeal I can only imagine they are going through. I am deeply ashamed to have been the source of this pain.”

Luzu TV founder and general producer Nicolás Occhiato said the channel had terminated everyone responsible for allowing the unverified report to air. He did not specify how many employees lost their jobs.

The full controversy, detailed by NBC News, unfolded only days after Lionel’s hat trick against Algeria. At the time, Argentina was preparing to face Austria at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Less than two months later, the news they had been forced to deny became true, but Lionel’s father’s legacy won’t be easily forgotten.

Jorge’s place in soccer history began long before contracts, sponsorships, and packed international stadiums. He trained as a chemical technician and joined the Acindar steel plant during the 1980s, eventually rising to a managerial position.

He had once imagined a future for himself in the sport. As a young man, he played midfield in Newell’s Old Boys’ developmental system, but compulsory military service interrupted that path.

Years later, he returned to the side of the field as a father. He regularly stood near the pitches at Malvinas, Newell’s youth facility, watching a small boy whose ability was becoming impossible to overlook.

Lionel Messi posed for a private photo session with El Gráfico magazine in June 2005 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. | Source: Getty Images

Lionel needed growth hormone treatment, and securing coverage in Argentina proved difficult. Jorge pushed Newell’s for help but failed to obtain the support his son required.

He then explored a move to River Plate. Those negotiations also collapsed, forcing the family to consider a much bigger gamble: taking a 13-year-old Argentine player to Europe.

Jorge helped create an arrangement that was highly unusual at the time. Barcelona would sign the foreign teenager while providing medical treatment, housing, an annual salary, work for his family, and payments connected to image rights.

The deal offered an opportunity, but life in Spain quickly became difficult. Much of the family struggled to adapt and returned to Rosario, leaving Jorge and Lionel in an apartment on Barcelona’s Gran Via de Carles III.

Lionel was still a child, separated from his mother and siblings while trying to prove that he belonged at one of Europe’s most demanding clubs. Jorge placed the decision in his hands: they could continue, or they could go home.

“My dad was always by my side. We went through many terrible things,” Lionel recalled in a 2007 interview with Radio Del Plata’s “Fútbol y algo más,” cited by Infobae. “Sometimes I would shut myself in the room and cry alone, or he would do the same without letting me see him.”

“We both pretended we were fine, but we were not,” he continued. “My dad asked me what I wanted to do, whether I wanted to stay or go back. I wanted to stay, and he stayed with me.”

That decision became one of the defining choices in modern soccer. Jorge did not score the goals or lift the trophies, but he gave his frightened son the support needed to remain in Barcelona.

Jorge appeared during the same 2007 program and delivered a message to Lionel, who was only beginning to understand the scale of the career ahead of him.

“You know very well that we have gone through many good moments and some that were not so good,” Jorge said. “You know that we always emerged stronger from those difficult moments, and we hope that continues because it helps us become stronger in life.”

He then told his son, “I believe that, beyond being a good soccer player, you are an excellent person.”

As Lionel became an international superstar, Jorge’s responsibilities expanded. The father and adviser became the central negotiator for the business operation surrounding the Messi name, dealing with some of the world’s largest companies.

Yet he rarely behaved like a celebrity. He gave only a handful of interviews over the years, including conversations with “El Gráfico,” Germany’s “Kicker,” and Spain’s “Informe Robinson.”

He also contributed memories to books about Lionel but usually chose silence. His Instagram account offered occasional glimpses of family life, celebrating his children, grandchildren, and nephews while recognizing Lionel’s achievements.

UNICEF remembered another side of him after his death. The humanitarian organization described Jorge as a benefactor who had remained committed to the rights of children and mourned the loss of the father of its goodwill ambassador.

Newell’s Old Boys was the first soccer institution to release a condolence message Saturday morning. The Rosario club remembered him as a loyal supporter, businessman, and the father of Argentina’s captain.

The club credited Jorge and Celia with guiding Lionel through “vision, rigor, and affection.” Those qualities defined a role that was often performed away from cameras, from the youth fields of Rosario to tense negotiations in Barcelona.

For years, Jorge guarded his son’s back without demanding public recognition. His death reveals how much of Lionel Messi’s extraordinary story depended on a father who chose to stay beside him when both of them were struggling.

Lionel Rushed Home for a Farewell Hidden From Cameras
