Security doesn\u2019t cross their minds until something breaks. But one compromised email or leaked customer file can undo months of progress. The five things covered here don\u2019t need technical know-how and you can knock them all out in a single afternoon.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Start With Passwords (And Actually Use a Manager)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ve heard it before: don\u2019t reuse passwords. But when you\u2019re creating a dozen accounts in your first week, it\u2019s easy to fall back on the same one you\u2019ve had since uni.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.droidviews.com\/top-password-manager-apps-for-your-android\/\">password manager<\/a> fixes this. Tools like Bitwarden or 1Password will generate long, random passwords for every account and keep them behind one master passphrase. Set it up on day one and add each new account as you go. That one habit alone will block the most common way attackers get in.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Turn On Two-Factor Authentication Everywhere<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Passwords on their own aren\u2019t enough. Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a second check at login, typically a short code from an app on your phone. So even if someone gets your password, they still can\u2019t access your account without that code.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start with your email, then your bank, payment processor, and anywhere you store customer data. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisa.gov\/audiences\/small-and-medium-businesses\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lists multi-factor authentication as one of the top actions a small business can take. Most services support it now, and it\u2019ll take about two minutes per account to switch on.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Lock Down Your Email<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your business email is the key to pretty much everything else. Password resets, invoices, contracts, customer conversations. If someone gets into your inbox, they can reset passwords on your other accounts, intercept payments, or pretend to be you when emailing clients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On top of 2FA (which you should already have turned on by now), be careful with links and attachments, even from people you know. Set up email filtering if your provider offers it. And if you\u2019re still running things through a free personal email address, consider switching to a provider with custom domains and better spam protection. You\u2019ll look more professional and have better control over security.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Choose the Right Place to Store Your Files<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where a lot of new founders trip up. They\u2019ll save contracts, financial records, and customer details in whatever cloud folder came with their email, without thinking about how that data is actually protected. Most consumer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.droidviews.com\/manage-your-cloud-storage-and-keep-eye-on-usage-with-unclouded\/\">cloud storage<\/a> providers can technically access your files because they hold the encryption keys. That\u2019s fine for photos, but not when you\u2019re storing business documents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">End-to-end encrypted <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/proton.me\/drive\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">online storage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> keeps your files locked so only you can decrypt them. The provider can\u2019t read what you\u2019ve uploaded. Several privacy-focused providers offer free tiers with enough space for the early months.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Encrypt Your Devices<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your laptop gets nicked from a coffee shop or your phone falls out of your pocket on the bus, encryption is what stops someone from reading your files. Without it, anyone with physical access to your device can pull data straight off the hard drive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Windows has BitLocker and Mac has FileVault, both built in and both can be turned on in your settings in under five minutes. Do the same for your phone. Modern iPhones and Android devices encrypt by default when you set a passcode, but double-check that it\u2019s active. It costs nothing and could save you if things go wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What Comes After the Basics<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These five steps won\u2019t make your business bulletproof, but they\u2019ll put you ahead of most early-stage founders. The FBI\u2019s Internet Crime Complaint Center reported over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/news\/press-releases\/fbi-releases-annual-internet-crime-report\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$16 billion in total cybercrime losses in 2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with small businesses disproportionately targeted because attackers know their defences tend to be weaker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve covered passwords, 2FA, email security, device encryption, and secure file storage, you\u2019ll have a solid baseline to build on as your business grows.
