Rockstar dropped 26 minutes of Grand Theft Auto VI<\/em> last night and it looks absurd. I watched the whole thing twice. Then I read the interviews that went up alongside it, hit one number, and closed my pre-order tab.<\/p>\n The number is 80.<\/p>\n Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, told The New York Times that his most recent playthrough took him around 80 hours. That run covered the main story plus some optional goals with narrative ramifications. Those are his words, from February, on a near-final build.<\/p>\n Every outlet ran that stat as good news. Look how much game you\u2019re getting. Book the week off. I think it\u2019s the strongest argument going for not buying this on November 19.<\/p>\n Two things about that figure before anyone panics.<\/p>\n First, it isn\u2019t the critical path alone. Nelson\u2019s run included side content that feeds back into the story, and nobody has said how much of the 80 came from extras. Second, the guy who helped build Leonida is not going to get lost in it. A first-timer who stops to look at things will take longer, not less.<\/p>\n So treat 80 as directional. This is the longest game Rockstar has ever made by a wide margin. GTA 5<\/em>, the current series record holder, runs about 32 hours on HowLongToBeat for its 69-mission story. Rockstar is roughly doubling that, on a map they say is three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n That\u2019s a lot of game. It\u2019s a lot of game specifically for people who have time.<\/p>\n Here\u2019s the stat nobody put in a headline yesterday.<\/p>\n On Steam, 23.9% of GTA 5<\/em> owners have the achievement for completing the final story mission. That\u2019s \u201cTo Live or Die in Los Santos,\u201d and it pops for any of the three endings. Roughly three out of every four people who bought the game never saw the credits on a 32-hour story.<\/p>\n Career Criminal, the 100% completion achievement, sits at 6%.<\/p>\n Now, part of that number is people who bought GTA 5<\/em> purely for Online and never touched Michael or Franklin. Fair. But 82.4% of Steam owners have the achievement for finishing Franklin\u2019s very first mission, so the overwhelming majority started the story. They just stopped somewhere in the middle and never came back.<\/p>\n Think about what you were doing in 2013 when GTA 5<\/em> launched. If you were 27 then, you\u2019re 40 now. You have less time than you did, not more, and the story you\u2019re being asked to finish is more than twice as long.<\/p>\n This is the part I want you to sit with.<\/p>\n Say you get five hours a week to play. That\u2019s a genuinely healthy amount for someone with a job, a partner, and kids who wake up early. Five hours a week against an 80-hour game is 16 weeks. Four months. Start on launch night and you\u2019re rolling credits around mid-March, assuming you play nothing else and never miss a week.<\/p>\n Get three hours a week instead? That\u2019s 27 weeks. No new Call of Duty<\/em>, no random Steam sale impulse, no going back to the comfort game you always go back to. Real life eats that schedule alive, which is exactly how you end up in the 76%.<\/p>\n Rockstar isn\u2019t hiding this, by the way. Nelson\u2019s pitch was that he wants players to get up, have a coffee, go for a run, talk to people, then get into trouble. That\u2019s a beautiful design goal. It\u2019s built for someone with a Saturday. Some of us have a Tuesday between 9:15 and 10:30 pm.<\/p>\n Waiting isn\u2019t just about time. The launch version is objectively the worst version of this game you will ever be able to buy.<\/p>\n Performance.<\/strong> Rockstar has said GTA 6<\/em> targets 30fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X\/S at launch, and hasn\u2019t committed to a performance mode. That could land later. Buy in March and you\u2019ll know instead of hoping.<\/p>\n The PC version.<\/strong> There isn\u2019t one announced. Rockstar has a long, consistent history here, and a PC release eventually arriving is a safe bet. If you\u2019re a PC player, day-one pre-ordering a console copy is a decision you make twice.<\/p>\n Patches.<\/strong> A game this size, built on systems this ambitious, will ship with bugs. It always does. Six months of patches is free quality.<\/p>\n Price.<\/strong> Standard is $79.99. Ultimate is $99.99. The physical box contains a download code, not a disc, so there\u2019s no used market to save you either. Rockstar games do go on sale. Not fast, but they go.<\/p>\n The Online question.<\/strong> Rockstar is currently selling this as a single-player game and hasn\u2019t announced anything about a GTA Online<\/em> successor. If your plan is to play with friends, you are pre-ordering against a feature that doesn\u2019t officially exist yet.<\/p>\n None of that costs you anything to wait for.<\/p>\n I\u2019ll steelman it, since there\u2019s a real argument here.<\/p>\n Spoilers. A game this big gets spoiled fast, and the Jason and Lucia relationship apparently branches based on what you do, which makes the discourse harder to dodge. If story surprises matter a lot to you, launch week is the only clean window.<\/p>\n The cultural moment. Playing GTA 6<\/em> in November 2026 is a shared event with a few million other people. That has genuine value and you can\u2019t buy it back in March.<\/p>\n And honestly, if you have the time, buy it. Some of you are between jobs, or your kids are grown, or you\u2019re taking the week off on purpose. That\u2019s a great use of $80.<\/p>\n But if you\u2019re reading this doing quiet mental math about whether you can carve out four months, the moment is not worth the shelf-sit. You already own games you bought for a moment. They\u2019re right there in your library, unplayed, next to the other ones.<\/p>\n Three things, and I\u2019d suggest the same to you.<\/p>\n Wishlist it, don\u2019t pre-order it.<\/strong> Pre-ordering solves a scarcity problem that does not exist. This will not sell out. Digital preload starts November 12 and you can buy it that morning if you change your mind.<\/p>\n Pick one game you already own and finish it before launch.<\/strong> You\u2019ve got just under twelve weeks. That\u2019s enough for a 30 to 40 hour game at a relaxed pace. Finishing something feels better than starting everything, and you\u2019ll know a lot more about your real weekly playtime after doing it. That number is the one that decides whether GTA 6<\/em> is a November buy or a spring buy.<\/p>\n Set a check-in for late January.<\/strong> By then you\u2019ll have reviews from people who played it like you would, a clear answer on the performance mode, and probably a patch or two. Decide with that information instead of a 26-minute trailer and a lot of adrenaline.<\/p>\n Look, I want this game. I watched the extended look twice and I\u2019m going to watch the map breakdowns like everyone else. Nothing about this is me being above the hype.<\/p>\n It\u2019s me having done this before. I\u2019ve bought the 80-hour tentpole at full price on launch night, played 11 hours in the first ten days, then watched it sit on the home screen until the guilt got loud enough that I stopped turning the console on at all. That\u2019s an expensive way to feel bad about a hobby you love.<\/p>\n Rockstar built a game you\u2019re supposed to live inside. If your life doesn\u2019t have room for a second life right now, that\u2019s not a failure. It\u2019s just information.
