The aquarium says it does not yet know whether the deaths are related. Rain\u2019s death comes after Peekachu, a 23-year-old Marineland beluga, died at the same aquarium from severe dehydration last week. Like Peekachu, Rain was captured from the wild in Russia and shipped to the notorious Niagara Falls theme park.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 30 belugas were moved out of Marineland within a matter of weeks\u2014a compressed timeline that appeared driven less by the whales\u2019 welfare than by Marineland\u2019s threats to kill the animals if export permits were not issued quickly. Also likely playing a role: the notorious roadside zoo\u2019s reportedly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vancouverisland.ctvnews.ca\/toronto\/local\/niagara\/article\/canadas-last-captive-whales-set-to-leave-marineland-for-us-aquariums\/#:~:text=Sources%20have%20said%20a%20deal%20is%20in%20place%20for%20the%20sprawling%20property%20near%20Horseshoe%20Falls%2C%20but%20it%20is%20conditional%20upon%20the%20park%20removing%20its%20animals.\">pending real estate deal<\/a>\u2014conditional on the animals being gone, which could earn the park\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/hamilton\/marineland-whales-loan-federal-government-9.7170824#:~:text=The%20323%2Dhectare%20property%2C%20on%20which%20the%20park%20was%20founded%20in%201961%2C%20is%20believed%20to%20be%20worth%20hundreds%20of%20millions%20of%20dollars.%20It%27s%20been%20closed%20to%20the%20public%20since%20the%20end%20of%20summer%202024.\">hundreds of millions of dollars<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis fast-tracked mass export was an epic failure,\u201d\u00a0said Kaitlyn Mitchell, Director of Legal Advocacy at Animal Justice. \u201cThirty sensitive, highly intelligent animals were transported from Marineland in a matter of weeks, a timeline that likely had far more to do with clearing the way for Marineland\u2019s real estate deal than it did with these animals\u2019 welfare. Now we\u2019re seeing the tragic consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The final transfers were completed earlier this week despite a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/animaljustice.ca\/media-releases\/animal-justice-calls-on-fisheries-minister-to-investigate-belugas-death-demands-pause-on-marineland-transports\">complaint Animal Justice filed<\/a>\u00a0with Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson after Peekachu, a 23-year-old beluga from Marineland,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheddaquarium.org\/stories\/remembering-peekachu\">died at Chicago\u2019s Shedd Aquarium<\/a>\u00a0less than two weeks after being exported. The complaint urged a pause on further transports until the remaining whales\u2019 health could be independently assessed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese whales deserved better,\u201d Ms. Mitchell said. \u201cUnder Ontario law,\u00a0Animal Welfare Services had the option to intervene\u00a0to ensure any whales in distress received appropriate care and that Marineland\u2019s ownership footed the bill. Rather than rushing to ship the animals off site,\u00a0Canada should have done its due diligence\u00a0and made sure they were truly healthy enough, as well as properly prepared and conditioned, for transport. This saga did not have to end this way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Canada\u2019s Wrong Perpetuated Without Breeding Ban<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The plight of Marineland\u2019s whales helped inspire Canadian lawmakers to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/laws-lois.justice.gc.ca\/eng\/annualstatutes\/2019_11\/page-1.html\">pass groundbreaking legislation in 2019<\/a>\u00a0banning whale and dolphin captivity, as well as outlawing their use in entertainment and breeding. However, the federal export permits which allowed Marineland\u2019s surviving belugas to leave Canada were reportedly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/hamilton\/marineland-rescue-plan-whales-breeding-9.7264656#:~:text=The%20office%20of%20Canadian%20Fisheries%20Minister%20Joanne%20Thompson%20stopped%20short%20on%20Thursday%20of%20saying%20it%20would%20ensure%20none%20of%20the%20Marineland%20whales%20become%20pregnant\">issued without conditions barring breeding.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This departs from both\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/ef25019a647845af9d5f36093e47ac02\/4\/054626980e722e3f193d5049c7225a1995ac4af3373771fb96fa99ec4a93450a?cache_buster=1786050522\">federal policy<\/a>\u00a0and the government\u2019s past practices.
