Dear Governor Hochul,<\/span><\/p>\n

I watched with interest the news that \u201c<\/span>Grieving families across New York are fighting
\nwhat they call an injustice\u201d. \u00a0<\/span>The
\ndecades old law that limits payouts in wrongful death lawsuits based on the
\npersons age and \/ or financial worth. <\/span>https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/new-york-grieving-families-act\/<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

This fight has been going on
\nso long and I for one, lived it when my young son bled to death following a
\ntonsillectomy over 30 years ago.\u00a0 <\/span>I didn\u2019t
\nneed the money, my son was dead, I wanted answers as to how this happened and
\nwithout a lawsuit, no one would talk.\u00a0 <\/span>There
\nis an important piece missing.\u00a0 <\/span>The
\nlawsuit happens after the death.\u00a0 <\/span>We need
\nto avoid the death to begin with and one reason I believe death from medical
\nerrors are so high is because the public is not prepared to be patients.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In 1996 we started Pulse Center
\nfor Patient Safety Education & Advocacy a small grassroots organization
\nbased on Long Island, New York to educate the public to be a support and
\nadvocate for each other for the best outcomes in care.\u00a0 <\/span>Learning how errors happen (something many
\nsurvivors want to know) and how to avoid medical injury needs the attention we
\nhave never received. \u00a0<\/span>Whether it is for older
\nadults, cancer, lupus, epilepsy, mental illness, disabilities, broken bones or
\nrare diseases, learning patient advocacy can save lives and reduce lawsuits
\nfollowing death or injury. So, while there is a discussion about payment after
\na wrongful death, please consider the work we have been doing for 25 years to
\navoid the injuries and death within the healthcare system, by educating the
\npublic to begin with.<\/span><\/p>\n
