\n\u201cWhich brings me back to Ecclesiastes, his search for happiness, and
\nmine. I spoke in chapter 4 about my first meeting, as a student, with
\nRabbi Menachem Mendel Schneersohn, the Lubavitcher Rebbe. As I was
\nwaiting to go in, one of his disciples told me the following story. A
\nman had recently written to the Rebbe on something of these lines: \u2018I
\nneed the Rebbe\u2019s help. I am deeply depressed. I pray and find no
\ncomfort. I perform the commands but feel nothing. I find it hard to
\ncarry on.\u2019 The Rebbe, so I was told, sent a compelling reply without
\nwriting a single word. He simply ringed the first word in every sentence
\n of the letter: the word \u2018I\u2019. It was, he was hinting, the man\u2019s
\nself-preoccupation that was at the root of his depression. It was as if
\nthe Rebbe were saying, as Viktor Frankl used to say in the name of
\nKierkegaard, \u2018The door to happiness opens outward.\u2019 It was this
\ninsight that helped me solve the riddle of Ecclesiastes. The word \u2018I\u2019
\ndoes not appear very often in the Hebrew Bible, but it dominates
\nEcclesiastes\u2019 opening chapters. “I enlarged my works: I built houses for
\nmyself, I planted vineyards for myself; I made gardens and parks for
\nmyself and I planted in them all kinds of fruit trees; I made ponds of
\nwater for myself from which to irrigate a forest of growing trees. I
\nbought male and female slaves and I had homeborn slaves. Also I
\npossessed flocks and herds larger than all who preceded me in Jerusalem.
\n Also, I collected for myself silver and gold and the treasure of kings
\nand provinces.” (Kohelet\/ Ecclesiastes 2:4\u20138) Nowhere else in the Bible is the
\nfirst-person singular used so relentlessly and repetitively. In the
\noriginal Hebrew the effect is doubled because of the chiming of the
\nverbal suffix and the pronoun: Baniti li, asiti li, kaniti li<\/span><\/i><\/b>, \u2018I built
\nfor myself, I made for myself, I bought for myself.\u2019 The source of
\nEcclesiastes\u2019 unhappiness is obvious and was spelled out many centuries
\nlater by the great sage Hillel: \u2018If I am not for myself, who will be?
\nBut if I am only for myself, what am I?\u2019 Happiness in the Bible is not
\n something we find in self-gratification. Hence the significance of the
\nword simchah. I translated it earlier as \u2018joy\u2019, but really it has no
\nprecise translation into English, since all our emotion words refer to
\nstates of mind we can experience alone. Simchah is something we cannot
\nexperience alone. Simchah is joy shared.\u201d
