The vulnerability has initially been found by @VBarraquito and then verified by NotebookCheck. Unlike the other bugs where the hacker gets remote access to the phone, here the hacker needs the phone to perform the hack. If someone gets hold of your unlocked phone, anyone who has that phone in his hands will have access to your pictures without the passcode, PIN, or fingerprint.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>The hack described above doesn&#8217;t involve any kind of technical skills or knowledge. It is done using the normal features of WhatsApp video calls. If someone receives a WhatsApp video call while the phone is locked, that person receives the call through WhatsApp. After receiving the call, when you tap the effects feature in the chat window, it displays the options related to effects, filters, and backgrounds. Next, users are supposed to click on the background option.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-media-max-width=\"560\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Be aware that your photos can be accessed without unlocking your phone when you receive a WhatsApp video call on Android.<br \/>This is in plain sight. It&#8217;s not hidden, not a secret feature. The test found that personal photos saved on the phone could be easily viewed without any security checks.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>Reassuringly, this vulnerability doesn&#8217;t work on every Android smartphone. This largely depends on how phone manufacturers handle lock-screen permissions.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>NotebookCheck tested the same process on a Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra running One UI 8.5. On that phone, tapping &#8216;Create with Meta AI&#8217; took the user back to the lock screen and asked for a passcode or fingerprint verification.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>However, this trick worked on the Oppo K13 running ColorOS 16. Since both the Samsung and Oppo devices tested run Android 16, the difference appears to be due to the companies&#8217; custom software, not Android itself.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, iPhone users are completely immune to this issue.
