Stewart Brand is one of those individuals
\nwho always thinks differently. Trying to encapsulate his opus would be
\nfutile, but to get just a taste of Brand, the starting point has to be
\nhis monumental work, The Whole Earth Catalog<\/em>\u2014a catalog, an
\nassortment of things that serve as useful “tools”: books, maps, garden
\nimplements, specialized clothing, carpenters’ and masons’ tools,
\nforestry gear, tents, welding equipment, professional journals, early
\nsynthesizers, and personal computers. The catalog also described where
\nthese things could be located or purchased. Its publication coincided
\nwith the great wave of social and cultural experimentation in the 1970s,
\n the convention-breaking, and the “do it yourself” attitude associated
\nwith the “counterculture.” It\u2019s the kind of book Noah might have written
\n while awaiting the flood.<\/p>\n

Brand is 86 but continues to write vigorously. His new,
\nsoon-to-be-released book is already being labelled a ‘future classic.’
\nTitled Maintenance of Everything<\/em>, it is the first in-depth exploration of maintenance\u2014and a powerful argument for its civilizational importance.<\/p>\n

“Maintenance is what keeps everything going. It\u2019s what keeps life going.
\n Yet it\u2019s also easy to shirk or defer\u2014until the thing breaks, the system
\n falters, and everything stops. The apparent paradox is profound:
\nMaintenance is absolutely necessary, and maintenance is optional.”<\/p>\n

As publisher explains, the book begins with “a dramatic contest of
\nmaintenance styles under life-critical conditions: the Golden Globe
\naround-the-world solo sailboat race of 1968. It goes on to explore the
\ninsights that can be gleaned from vehicle maintenance, from the zeal of
\nmotorcycle maintainers to the maintenance philosophies that fought for
\ndominance in the auto industry, to the state of electric vehicle
\nmanufacturing today. There are absorbing detours into the evolution of
\nprecision in manufacturing, the enduring importance of manuals,
\nsustainment in the military, and the never-ending battle against
\ncorrosion.”<\/p>\n

Maintenance of Everything is a sophisticated, provocative call to expand
\n what we mean by “maintenance”\u2014not just the tiresome preventative tasks
\nbut the whole grand process of keeping a thing going. It invites us to
\nunderstand not only the profound impact maintenance has on our daily
\nlives but also why taking responsibility for maintaining
\nsomething\u2014whether a motorcycle, a monument, or our very planet\u2014can be a
\nradical act.<\/p>\n

In today\u2019s digital world, buying a paperback may sound retrograde, even
\narchaically trivial. Yet it\u2019s possible that our grandchildren will one
\nday need to restart civilization\u2014and in that moment, they will be in
\neven greater need of thinkers like Brand. The future of humanity is both
