TFSAs can be withdrawn last.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"draw-from-non-investment-sources-to-let-your-portfolio-grow\"><strong>Grow the capital:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div class=\"table-responsive\">\n<table class=\"table table-bordered table-striped\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"20%\">Withdraw first<\/td>\n<td width=\"20%\">CPP\/QPP\/OAS<\/td>\n<td width=\"60%\">Yes, you can can start taking CPP\/QPP retirement benefits as early as age 60 (though your lifetime benefit will be smaller) and you can take OAS at age 65 \u2013 which is pretty standard.\u00a0This may allow you to grow the capital inside RRSPs\/RRIFs or TFSAs.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Withdraw last<\/td>\n<td>TFSA<\/td>\n<td>Needless to say it\u2019s great to maximize tax-free growth via TFSAs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c<em>The first rule of compounding is to never interrupt it unnecessarily.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"minimize-estate-taxes-and-leave-more-to-your-beneficiaries\"><strong>Maximize the estate:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div class=\"table-responsive\">\n<table class=\"table table-bordered table-striped\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"20%\">Withdraw first<\/td>\n<td width=\"20%\">All personal investment assets, except TFSA<\/td>\n<td width=\"60%\">Money left in an RRSP\/RRIF at death is usually fully taxable in an estate. You should enjoy the money you\u2019ve earned while you are alive and if you want to leave a legacy, leave other assets like your primary home and TFSAs to beneficiaries.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Withdraw last<\/td>\n<td>TFSA<\/td>\n<td>Draw this last account last since TFSA assets can continue to grow with no future tax implication to you or your estate!<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/watch-out-for-rrsp-and-rrif-taxation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A big reminder!<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"WkEMKIxpvA\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/watch-out-for-rrsp-and-rrif-taxation\/\">Watch out for RRSP and RRIF taxation<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe data-src=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/watch-out-for-rrsp-and-rrif-taxation\/embed\/#?secret=kaLej1xw1h#?secret=WkEMKIxpvA\" class=\"wp-embedded-content lazyload\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cWatch out for RRSP and RRIF taxation\u201d \u2014 My Own Advisor\" data-secret=\"WkEMKIxpvA\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>What is our drawdown order?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Now that we\u2019re retired, we\u2019re focused on this order for asset decumulation:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cNRT\u201d = Non-Registered (N) with Corporation withdrawals, along with RRSP assets (R), then TFSAs (T).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is actually the default logic in fact for many professional software programs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The reasoning behind it is to maintain tax-deferred accounts and tax-free accounts compounding as long as possible.<\/strong> In doing so, we will be able to adjust the timing of CPP and OAS income streams for the bond-like, inflation-protected income I mentioned above.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here is a summary of my thinking and I will amend this table over time too should anything change.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Account Type<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>Details<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong><em>My Own Advisor<\/em><\/strong><strong> Drawdown Order Considerations<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Taxable Accounts<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>Non-Registered Accounts<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Liquidate slowly or first.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Allow tax-deferred or tax-free assets to keep compounding.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Canadian dividends and\/or capital gains can be an efficient form of taxation. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Tax-Deferred Accounts<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>RRSP\/RRIF, LIRA\/LIF<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Liquidate second<\/strong><strong>, certainly this might come first if you don\u2019t have any significant taxable accounts. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Withdrawals trigger ordinary income tax but keeping a large, registered (RRSP\/RRIF) balance intact for too long (i.e., until your 70s) can impact government (OAS) clawbacks.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Tax-Free Accounts<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>TFSA<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Liquidate last. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>TFSA assets as the last account standing can serve as the ultimate tax buffer to avoid higher tax brackets since all growth and withdrawals are tax-free.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Great for longevity risks and estate planning \u2013 this could be a very large (!) emergency fund as you age. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>What is your potential drawdown order?
