For aspiring
\nleaders, educators, and entrepreneurs, A Journey of Insights: Lessons In Leadership And Legacy<\/a>, offers a roadmap to success grounded in real-world experience, with a focus on
\nhumility, listening, and building strong, collaborative environments. The book is both
\na personal memoir and a strategic guide for those aiming to leave a lasting
\nlegacy in business.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the core of
\nhis message is the central theme that listening to voices around you throughout
\nlife is the key to success. \u201cIn essence, ears can speak louder than voices,\u201d

Leave time
\nin your day to talk to those around you<\/b>. Ellis explains that creativity in
\nbusiness doesn\u2019t just happen at your desk. It may be sparked by random hallway
\nconversations or discussions in the employee cafeteria and other office
\ngathering places. The other minds around you are a resource. Use them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Passion may
\nnot guarantee success. However, it will carry you through failure<\/b>. \u201cYour
\npassion will always put you one level above someone who is simply competent at
\ntheir job,\u201d explains Ellis. \u201cYour passion is what makes your job feel
\nexceptional to you and that\u2019s something worth finding.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A good
\nmentor is someone who has been where you might like to go, and who is serving
\nin that mentorship capacity in such a manner that you are their only agenda<\/b>.
\nThey don\u2019t stand to benefit from the relationship other than to see you become
\na success. They are objective, thoughtful, and caring in their approach to you
\nand your questions. They are generous with their time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Learning
\nfrom the ground up is invaluable when you are beginning a career, as it gives
\nyou respect for those who do the jobs that make a business run, and for those
\nwhose work supports your own work<\/b>. Any business succeeds on the strength of
\na variety of workers doing a variety of jobs and the better understanding you
\nhave of that, the better the odds for your own success.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Queston: Why
\nwas it important for you to author this book now?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ellis<\/b>: Well,
\nto be honest with you, I needed to live a full life first. I needed
\nseventy-five years of experience to finally top off a storage tank full of
\nstories to share with my students. When I first started teaching at age fifty,
\nI didn’t quite realize how powerful those real-world stories would be in
\nbringing dry, textbook theories to life.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, in the
\nlater stages of my life, I just wanted to get those lessons down on paper. It
\nis my ultimate giveback to you, the reader, with a deep thanks for listening,
\nlearning, and loving. My hope is that by sharing the journey I\u2019ve gone through,
\nothers might avoid some of the potholes and mistakes I\u2019ve made or perhaps
\namplify and build on the good strides I managed to make along the way.
\nUltimately, this book cascades through many, many stories to show people how
\nthey can truly thrive.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Question:
\nWhat do you believe is the most important leadership skill, and why?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ellis<\/b>: At
\nthe heart of everything I\u2019ve learned is a surprisingly simple message:
\nListening may be the most important leadership skill of all. We live in a world
\nwhere everyone wants to shout, but the truth is that ears can speak louder than
\nvoices. First, we listen, and then we learn.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Decades ago, my
\nHarvard Business School professor, Anthony Athos, tested us on this by having
\nus remain completely silent during a 45-minute interview. That exam proved to
\nme that when you truly listen, two things happen: you learn a whole lot of
\nunfiltered truth, and the other person walks away knowing you actually care.
\nPeople are willing to speak to others if others are willing to listen.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The second,
\nequally vital skill is gaining trust. Trust is implicit, but it isn\u2019t handed to
\nyou on a silver platter\u2014it needs to be earned every single day from your
\nemployees, your customers, and your stakeholders. If you can’t build that
\nfoundation of trust, the whole leadership structure crumbles.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Question:
\nDuring your career, which did you appreciate more, being a mentor or a mentee,
\nand why?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ellis<\/b>: That\u2019s
\na bit like asking which of your kids you love more\u2014I absolutely loved both
\nroles because we are all a product of our surroundings and our experiences.
\nThey feed directly into each other.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I deeply
\nenjoyed being a mentee because my own mentors taught me so much. My father,
\nGeorge Ellis, was one of the greatest mentors of my life. Watching the quiet,
\nrelationship-focused way he ran his bank established a gold standard for me. I
\napplied his principles to every boss I ever had and tried to embody them when I
\nbecame a boss myself.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But on the flip
\nside, throughout my business and academic career, nothing has been more
\nsatisfying than mentoring. Sitting down with young people, asking Socratic
\nquestions instead of dictating what they “should” do, and guiding
\nthem through major decisions in their careers and lives is the most rewarding
\nthing I have ever done. I loved contributing to their journeys and watching
\nthem find their own waves to ride.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Question:
\nWhat do you want your legacy to be?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ellis<\/b>: I\u2019ve
\nnever cared much for personal trophies. When I look back at my time in
\nacademia, I\u2019m incredibly proud that I left the business school better than I
\nfound it, and I can honestly say I enjoyed virtually every minute of my time
\nthere.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But as I enter
\nwhat I call my “Fifth Decade,” my focus has shifted entirely to
\nservant leadership and community impact. I want my legacy to be measured by the
\ntime and effort I devote to helping those who are less fortunate\u2014most of whom I
\nwill never even meet\u2014so they can get their lives back on track and forge ahead.
\nIt is the ultimate giveback, and it brings the ultimate reward of knowing I
\nmade a real difference.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the end of
\nthe day, I want these the pages in the book and my life’s lessons to help those who read them
\nbecome better partners, parents, siblings, children, bosses, employees, and
\nthought producers. That is the legacy that truly lasts.<\/span><\/p>\n

__<\/span><\/p>\n

Ellis
\nwas dean of the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern
\nCalifornia from April 2007 until June 2019, where he was responsible for the
\neducation and well-being of some 5,700 students, both graduate and
\nundergraduate. In addition, he had a full-time tenured appointment as professor
\nof Marketing, where he was since 1997, retiring in July 2021. Prior to being
\nappointed dean, he was vice provost, Globalization, for the university,
\nresponsible for building the USC name worldwide.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At USC, he was
\nawarded both the Teaching Has No Boundaries award, given by the faculty, and
\nthe Golden Apple Award, given by the students. He also was given the
\nOutstanding Teaching and Mentoring Award from the USC Parents\u2019 Association and
\nwas named one of the top five professors at USC by the students.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Holding an MBA
\ndegree from the Harvard Business School and a BBA degree from the University of
\nNew Mexico, Ellis worked in the business world as president\/CEO of Porsche
\nDesign, a high-end accessories company owned by Europe\u2019s Porsche family.
\nAdditionally, he was CEO of Port O\u2019Call Pasadena, a high-end home accessory
\nchain, and owner\/partner in six other companies. He started his career with
\nBroadway Department Stores in Los Angeles.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ellis sits in a
\ndirectorship or advisory capacity with a number of companies, continuing direct
\ninvolvement in the business arena. He has been a member of the Young Presidents
\nOrganization since 1987. He has addressed many organizations around the world on
\nvarious business topics and continues to consult with numerous businesses and
\nother organizations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
