Zuiderzeemuseum<\/a> (Southern Sea Museum)<\/strong> in Enkhuizen<\/a> is an open air museum dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage of the Zuiderzee region.<\/strong> It is an hour by direct train from Amsterdam, and one ticket covers both the open-air village of more than 140 historic buildings and the indoor museum down by the harbour.<\/strong><\/p>\n As a person who\u2019s fascinated by how people<\/a> live<\/strong> \u2014 interested in seeing their homes and learning about their habits \u2014 I\u2019ve always dreamt of going back in time to experience everyday life in various eras. I have no nostalgia for the past; don\u2019t get me wrong, I love our modern times and wouldn\u2019t dream of living in another age. But I do have a deep curiosity. What were their morning routines like? What did they eat, wear, and talk about? Where did they sleep? Unfortunately, time travel isn\u2019t possible, but there are a few places where part of my curiosity can be satisfied, such as outdoor heritage sites<\/a> where entire villages are preserved or recreated. One such place is the open-air cultural centre in Enkhuizen that I\u2019m going to talk about today.<\/p>\n \u2728<\/strong>Day-trip suitability<\/strong> Enkhuizen<\/a> is a charming town on the shores of IJsselmeer<\/strong>, once an important fishing port until the Zuiderzee was closed off in 1932 by the construction of the Afsluitdijk<\/a>, a dam that severed the connection to the sea<\/a>. The Zuiderzee was a shallow bay of the North Sea in the northwest of the Netherlands. After it was closed off, the area was divided in two: the waters south of the Afsluitdijk<\/a> are now called the IJsselmeer, while those to the north are known as the Wadden Sea. This dam was needed to protect the country from flooding.<\/p>\n Traces of Enkhuizen\u2019s maritime past can be seen throughout the town, and its connection to the water remains vital today. Enkhuizen is often referred to as \u201cHaringstad\u201d (Herring Town) due to its fishing history. The town has a large harbour filled with modern boats and is a popular destination for boat rides and water sports.<\/p>\n This page includes affiliate links. If you click and purchase, I may receive a small commission at no extra costs to you.<\/em><\/p>\n The Zuiderzeemuseum aims to preserve a glimpse of that past life<\/strong> for us to experience and for the locals to remember their history. The outdoor section is designed like an authentic village, complete with canals, churches, and even a few animals.<\/p>\n The indoor section features a variety of exhibitions showcasing the history of the region, including reconstructed house interiors, art, and various artefacts. It also houses a large collection of historical boats in the Schepenhal. The two parts keep different calendars: the indoor museum is open all year, while the open-air village closes for the winter, so check the dates before planning a trip outside the summer months.<\/p>\n The idea for this open air museum came around 1930<\/strong>, with an exhibition held in the park along the sea wall: Zuiderzee Visscherij Tentoonstelling (Southern Sea Fishing Exhibition). This showcased cardboard houses and costumed locals from around the Zuiderzee. The plans had to be put on hold though because of the war, but in 1949 the museum held a very successful exhibition that was the first brick in constructing the indoor museum. After this, the Zuiderzeemuseum bought some warehouses from seed company Sluis & Groot for the symbolic amount of 1 guilder, so they could start the outdoor museum as well. The indoor museum opened officially on 1 July 1950, in a row of restored seventeenth-century warehouses on the Wierdijk, some of which had belonged to the Dutch East India Company.<\/p>\n The open air museum had its official opening on 6 May 1983<\/strong>, with Queen Beatrix as a guest of honour.<\/p>\n There\u2019s a big variety of buildings<\/strong> to be seen, including a windmill<\/a>, lime kilns, a fish-smoking house, a steam laundry, a drugstore, a pharmacy, a basketmaker\u2019s workshop, a blacksmith\u2019s forge, a cheese warehouse, a school, and even a hairdresser\u2019s, among others.<\/p>\n The museum is peppered with ateliers where you can watch craftsmen at work<\/strong>. Dressed in traditional costumes, they\u2019re happy to answer any questions visitors might have about their craft. There\u2019s even a smokehouse where you can enjoy smoked fish for lunch. Kids can get involved too\u2014they can dress up in traditional costumes, craft boats from wooden clogs, learn to milk a (fake) cow, or simply run around playing games that have been enjoyed for centuries.<\/p>\n One of the things I like about Zuiderzeemuseum<\/strong> is its authentic presentation and the absence of the usual souvenir shops selling wooden-tulip clich\u00e9s. You can buy handmade objects from the ateliers instead, which I find amazing. The museum also has a few restaurants where you can stop for refreshments and rest before continuing your exploration.<\/p>\n Around the year, the museum hosts various events, like the Maritime Festival and the country goat inspection in August, or the autumn evenings in the open-air village \u2014 Avond in \u2019t Zuiderzeedorp<\/em> \u2014 when the place is lit with more than a thousand storm lanterns, the houses are open and visitors can join the field barge for a trip on the canals.<\/p>\n How to get to the Zuiderzeemuseum from Amsterdam<\/strong><\/p>\n Trains from Amsterdam Centraal to Enkhuizen are direct and take about an hour. From the station you can walk to the museum in about fifteen minutes, following the old fashioned street signs (or Google Maps). If you drive, there is a car park at the entrance pavilion on Sluisweg with its own short ferry crossing, and a second entrance at Noorder Wierdijk where you walk straight into the village.<\/p>\n Opening hours and season<\/strong><\/p>\n The indoor museum is open all year, daily from 10.00 to 17.00, and closes only on Christmas Day and New Year\u2019s Day. The open-air village runs from the end of March to the end of October \u2014 in 2026 that is 28 March to 25 October. The dates shift a little each year, so check the museum\u2019s site before you travel.<\/p>\n Tickets and how long to allow<\/strong><\/p>\n One ticket covers the indoor museum and the open-air village. Booking online is usually a little cheaper than paying at the desk, and the museum is included in some regional and city passes<\/a>. <\/p>\n You can easily spend half a day here, if not longer. If you want to see the indoor museum properly as well, give yourself most of the day. And don\u2019t forget to take a walk in the beautiful town afterwards, because there is a lot to see and the atmosphere is very chill.<\/p>\n Enkhuizen and the museum together make a full day out from Amsterdam. What to see in the Zuiderzee open-air village<\/strong><\/h3>\n
<\/strong>There are over 140 historical buildings in Zuiderzeemuseum<\/strong>, that recreate life in the region as it was a century ago. Some of these buildings are authentic, relocated here in their entirety, while others are faithful replicas. You can wander around the place and \u2013 my favourite part \u2014 enter the buildings to explore the interiors, which are also meticulously recreated. Though the food on the tables is made of plastic, it looks so realistic that you almost expect to be invited to sit down and try it.
