Parton was born on January 19, 1946, in a one-room cabin in Locust Ridge, near Pittman Center in Sevier County, Tennessee. She was the fourth of 12 children born to Robert Lee Parton and Avie Lee Owens Parton. The family was very poor. They lived without electricity or indoor plumbing for many years in the Great Smoky Mountains.<\/p>\n
Music filled their home. Parton started writing songs as a little girl and began performing in public while still a teenager. She appeared on the Grand Ole Opry when she was just 13.<\/p>\n
