Aidan\u00a0Dresang\u00a0stands out as one of our most active and consistent\u00a0undergraduate voices\u00a0at\u202fNot Even Past<\/em>. Working under the mentorship of\u202fErika\u00a0Bsumek\u202fat\u202fThe University of Texas at Austin,\u00a0Dresang\u2019s work explores the relationship between communities, infrastructure, technology, and democracy. His research\u00a0examines\u00a0how ordinary people have challenged large institutions and technocratic systems that they believed threatened their values, livelihoods, or environments. From antinuclear activism in North Texas to the experiences of Black Civilian Conservation Corps workers at Palo Duro Canyon, his work highlights how local struggles reveal broader questions about power, citizenship, and public participation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dresang\u00a0recently completed his undergraduate honors thesis,\u202fExposing the Nuclear Dinosaur: How North Texans Protested Nuclear Power and Energized Democracy<\/em>, which received the Liberal Arts Honors Outstanding Thesis Award in the Humanities category from the\u202fUT Austin Liberal Arts Honors Scholarship Committee\u202fin Spring 2026. He is currently exploring connections between the twentieth-century antinuclear movement and present-day debates surrounding AI data centers and technological development. Beyond his academic research, he is deeply committed to public history and history education. In fall 2026, he will graduate with a degree in History and Social Studies certification before beginning student teaching at Weiss High School in\u202fPflugerville. He also continues to work with\u202fClioVis, a UT-based educational technology platform focused on interactive timelines and critical thinking in history education, where he develops research timelines, social media content, and educational materials that connect historical inquiry to contemporary public debates.\u00a0<\/p>\n

His first contribution to\u202fNot Even Past<\/em>, published in February 2024, reflected many of the themes that continue to shape\u00a0Dresang\u2019s\u00a0work: environmental history, public history, and the relationship between science and historical interpretation. In \u201cThe Fellowship of the Tree Rings: A\u00a0ClioVis\u00a0Project,\u201d\u00a0Dresang\u00a0examined how scholars have used dendrochronology\u2014the study of tree rings\u2014to reconstruct centuries of Caribbean hurricane activity and connect climatic shifts to major historical developments such as the Sugar Revolution and the Golden Age of European Piracy. Drawing inspiration from a\u00a0RadioLab\u00a0episode and research by scholars such as Valarie\u00a0Trouet,\u00a0Dresang\u00a0explored how environmental forces shaped human history in ways often overlooked by traditional narratives. \"The<\/a><\/figure>\n

Published in October 2024, \u201cLeaps of Fame: The Rise of Sam Patch and a Changing Industrial Landscape\u201d demonstrated\u00a0Dresang\u2019s\u00a0growing interest in the intersection of labor history, environmental history, and public space. The piece examined the life of nineteenth-century daredevil Sam Patch, one of the United States\u2019 earliest \u201ccommon man\u201d celebrities, whose public jumps became spectacles tied to the social transformations of the Industrial Revolution. Drawing on historian Paul E. Johnson\u2019s work and integrating an interactive\u202fClioVis\u202ftimeline,\u00a0Dresang\u00a0situated Patch\u2019s performances within broader struggles over industrialization, class identity, and access to natural spaces in early America. Rather\u00a0than\u00a0presenting\u00a0Patch simply as an eccentric entertainer,\u00a0Dresang\u00a0showed how\u00a0his\u00a0performances\u00a0reflected deeper tensions between working-class communities and elite attempts to privatize and regulate public land during the rise of industrial capitalism.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"Leaps<\/a><\/figure>\n

Published in fall 2025, \u201cConstructing a Canyon: Black CCC Workers and the Making of Palo Duro\u201d marked a significant expansion of\u00a0Dresang\u2019s\u00a0scholarship into questions of race, memory, infrastructure, and public landscapes in the American Southwest. Focusing on Black Civilian Conservation Corps workers who helped build\u202fPalo Duro Canyon State Park\u00a0during the 1930s,\u00a0Dresang\u00a0examined how New Deal infrastructure projects simultaneously depended on Black labor while erasing Black presence from the historical narratives embedded within the park itself. Drawing on archival sources, including letters written by Black CCC workers protesting segregation and geographic isolation, he argued that the park\u2019s roads, trails, landmarks, and promotional materials constructed a settler-centered vision of Texas history that marginalized both Black and Indigenous peoples.\u00a0Drawing on ideas such\u00a0as \u201cplace-making\u201d and\u202fErika\u00a0Bsumek\u2019s\u00a0idea of \u201cinfrastructures of dispossession,\u201d\u00a0Dresang\u00a0demonstrated how physical landscapes shape public memory and historical understanding.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Through his work with\u202fNot Even Past<\/em>, Aidan\u00a0Dresang\u00a0has consistently combined rigorous historical research with digital humanities and public engagement. Whether writing about climate history, industrialization, labor struggles, or the racial politics of public landscapes, his work encourages readers to think critically about how ordinary people\u00a0shape\u2014and are shaped by\u2014the environments and institutions around them. Central to this approach has been his work with\u00a0ClioVis, where he uses interactive timelines and digital tools to help audiences visualize historical connections across space, time, and theme. As both a historian and future educator,\u00a0Dresang\u00a0remains\u00a0committed to making history accessible, relevant, and meaningful beyond the university classroom.\u00a0<\/p>\n
