It\u2019s a beautiful country with<br \/>\nwonderful people. But more importantly, almost all that we have today sprang<br \/>\nfrom that vibrant, innovative, intellectually brilliant culture \u2013 Democracy,<br \/>\nMathematics, the Sciences, Philosophy, the arts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium;\">Sure there are other cultures<br \/>\nthat have influenced the word a great deal from the Romans (though they stole a lot of their ideas from Greece too), to ancient India, China, then later the French, Germans, Spanish, Portugese, Dutch and the British.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">But the<br \/>\nGreek culture has had a disproportionate impact on the world we live in today. My<br \/>\nAmerican wife, Catherine, often has quite a \u2018new world&#8217; take on issues \u2013 On<br \/>\nGreece, she also had a very thought-provoking insight; &#8220;it\u2019s amazing that this country was the<br \/>\nbirthplace of so much that is exceptional in the modern world. I came to the conclusion that one powerful factor was<br \/>\ndeclining productivity growth. <\/span><\/p>\n<p data-end=\"547\" data-start=\"476\"><strong data-end=\"547\" data-start=\"476\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium;\">&#8220;Making the safe decision is the fastest way to become irrelevant.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-end=\"903\" data-start=\"552\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium;\">Teresa Barreira, Global Chief Marketing and Communications Officer at Publicis Sapient, argues that growth comes from challenging the status quo:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-end=\"903\" data-start=\"552\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium;\"><em data-end=\"865\" data-start=\"698\"><b>&#8220;Fortune favors the brave who are willing to disrupt, challenge, and change things. It applies to everyone and everything, from individuals to companies and brands.&#8221;<\/b><\/em> <span data-state=\"closed\"><a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/tbarreira?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Teresa Barreira on LinkedIn<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">Countries<br \/>\nneed to keep innovating, taking risks (as in the quote above), challenging the status quo, and improving, to maintain their economic strength.<br \/>\nAnd without economic strength, no other can really persist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">No country can<br \/>\nafford to rest on its laurels, otherwise they risk going from being the Greece<br \/>\nof the ancient world to the Greece of today (still beautiful but certainly no one would claim it is a global powerhouse).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">Then I<br \/>\nstarted to think about three countries that I am most intimately acquainted<br \/>\nwith \u2013 I have lived and worked extensively in all three countries. The<br \/>\nNetherlands, where I was born, and the home of my mother.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">The UK where I was<br \/>\nraised for much of my life, and where I went to school, and university. And finally, the<br \/>\nUSA, the country I moved to by choice \u2013 first, to study for an MBA, and then<br \/>\nraising a family and working there, for ten years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">But my<br \/>\nexperiences are one part of the story only. I will rely on data to inform me as<br \/>\nto my thesis on falling productivity. But there are other, rather wonderful<br \/>\nreasons why comparing the UK to the Netherlands, and the USA can provide such<br \/>\npowerful insights. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">The USA has<br \/>\nthe most free market Economy of the three \u2013 the lowest taxes, the highest inequality (though<br \/>\nthe UK is getting closer), and the least protective legislation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">It varies from<br \/>\nstate to state though \u2013 Massachusetts, where I lived, is closer to the UK in workers<br \/>\nprotection. Whilst States like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bakerdonelson.com\/easy-guide-north-carolina\"><span style=\"color: #01ffff;\">North Carolina<\/span><\/a>, Florida, or Texas are truly the \u2018wild west\u2019 with<br \/>\nvery little in the way of workers rights, paid vacation, or maternity\/paternity leave).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">The<br \/>\nNetherlands is at the other end of the spectrum politically, and socially. It is very hard to fire<br \/>\nsomeone (as in France, or Germany). Workers are far more protected than in the UK.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><b>Dutch employees also work some of the shortest hours in the world: 27 hours a week in the Netherlands versus 36 in the USA<br \/>\nand 31 in the UK.\u00a0<\/b> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/worldpopulationreview.com\/country-rankings\/average-work-week-by-country\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">https:\/\/worldpopulationreview.com\/country-rankings\/average-work-week-by-country<\/span><\/a>\u00a0 &#8211; as you can see one way thay achieve that is by being super-productive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">It\u2019s hard to<br \/>\ntalk about large macro economic issues like productivity, or innovation, without veering into<br \/>\npolitics. When you start to talk about solutions to issues like low<br \/>\nproductivity growth, it\u2019s almost impossible to do so without talking politics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">However, I<br \/>\nam aiming to, as far as possible, avoid taking a political position. That is one of the reasons why I chose two countries with much differing political outlooks, to compare to the UK.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/a\/AVvXsEh24fviss3YEg-zqL4T1Z6jgA6OABjFPNDFUwiifTQ-MB-7s9rgDd8UhcdCETvmSMIzefu54xVkXNT1gOcM8nNSV2hx4E4TnbdT958Yx3i8yQH6SbsAiQ6w-pBS6YSvH6tJJiKTiYIHCWXIQ5u_kZhvTsTTmPtZfyklVXgitXBmxw5Kr0tc5NdrmGNepmJU\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-original-height=\"691\" data-original-width=\"1328\" height=\"278\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/a\/AVvXsEh24fviss3YEg-zqL4T1Z6jgA6OABjFPNDFUwiifTQ-MB-7s9rgDd8UhcdCETvmSMIzefu54xVkXNT1gOcM8nNSV2hx4E4TnbdT958Yx3i8yQH6SbsAiQ6w-pBS6YSvH6tJJiKTiYIHCWXIQ5u_kZhvTsTTmPtZfyklVXgitXBmxw5Kr0tc5NdrmGNepmJU=w531-h278\" width=\"531\"\/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">The Problem<br \/>\n\u2013 low productivity growth in the UK over the last twenty years, which has been<br \/>\nexacerbated by each crisis \u2013 from the 2008 financial crash, to Brexit, to the<br \/>\nCovid pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\"><b>UK productivity, already struggling, has been hit by each<br \/>\ncrisis, and not recovered from them (in the way that the USA, has, for<br \/>\nexample). Why is that?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%; mso-no-proof: yes;\"><!--[if gte vml 1]><v:shape id=\"Picture_x0020_2\" o:spid=\"_x0000_i1027\"\n type=\"#_x0000_t75\" style=\"width:450.75pt;height:324.75pt;visibility:visible;\n mso-wrap-style:square\">\n <v:imagedata src=\"https:\/\/rudylearningaboutstartups.blogspot.com\/2026\/05\/file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Rudol\/AppData\/Local\/Temp\/msohtmlclip1\/01\/clip_image003.png\"\n  o:title=\"\"\/>\n<\/v:shape><![endif]--><!--[if !vml]--><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"383\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/a\/AVvXsEi9UfyHfnxNWDV2pkDsEVxpG4uzOevISdVdNcqj23nmjpjnoAPBz8AhZBXaZ7rSqVhH8YmXu4w0_8a5oEnznotAz_e716e5uOXdTAegUgKT6xXr1KbDmKGfUdWWPaI71Hs3U-pZ9HfM2m64HK_rhCI-xz0hDPyQhWhwQEtCYwKwBC-uuWTBIQw8CbCMKw2I=w532-h383\" v:shapes=\"Picture_x0020_2\" width=\"532\"\/><!--[endif]--><\/span><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">So I have<br \/>\ntwo theories backed with extensive evidence, why the UK is<br \/>\nunderperforming both a more free market economy like the USA, as well as a more<br \/>\nplanned economy like the Netherlands?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">And one that is more of a conjecture, based on my personal experience and observations. However, I have provided some good data to support that theory as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\"><b>Lack of<br \/>\ninvestment<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">My<br \/>\nexperience of working in the US and the Netherlands bears out the hard<br \/>\nevidence, that business investment in the UK is very low and falling, and that<br \/>\nthis is a major factor in our poor productivity growth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">I\u2019m not just talking<br \/>\nabout investment in hardware, software or other work tools. There is very<br \/>\nlittle on the job training in the UK, versus in the US, or the Netherlands. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">The numbers<br \/>\nbehind that observation are stark:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\"><b>Whole-economy investment in the UK was just<br \/>\n18.9% of GDP in 2025 \u2014 the lowest in the G7. The US sits at 21.6%. The<br \/>\nNetherlands at 19.7%.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">A three-percentage-point gap against the US doesn\u2019t sound<br \/>\nlike much. But sustained year after year for two decades, it compounds into a<br \/>\nyawning chasm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%; mso-no-proof: yes;\"><!--[if gte vml 1]><v:shape\n id=\"Investment_x0020_chart\" o:spid=\"_x0000_i1026\" type=\"#_x0000_t75\" style=\"width:6in;\n height:240pt;visibility:visible;mso-wrap-style:square\">\n <v:imagedata src=\"https:\/\/rudylearningaboutstartups.blogspot.com\/2026\/05\/file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Rudol\/AppData\/Local\/Temp\/msohtmlclip1\/01\/clip_image005.png\"\n  o:title=\"\"\/>\n<\/v:shape><![endif]--><!--[if !vml]--><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"320\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/a\/AVvXsEjvTcKl3xydF2EC8eESX7-JNGzK-tj7geyRXzD8dd-OpzVqVTRQLpUjPi-uISKs_A-fIzJtV54WxzRtmp1Lu5jmczu9OUHDZMvh-w7J3zozZFHGu9hyZznEvA3Imcs3ZQxWGQMhz0MQciPioJP8hYfeiadnmhIvL4bI0Bgq7lNn1w4w1bKBBsLK5SxBQvbj\" v:shapes=\"Investment_x0020_chart\" width=\"576\"\/><!--[endif]--><\/span><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium;\">The<br \/>\nInstitute for Public Policy Research went further in their April 2026 analysis.<br \/>\nThey calculated a \u201ccapital gap\u201d \u2014 how much less capital British workers have to<br \/>\nwork with compared to peer countries.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium;\"><span>The answer: <\/span><b><i>British workers have 38% less<br \/>\ncapital per hour worked than the average of comparable economies. In<br \/>\nmanufacturing specifically, the gap rises to 47% \u2014 versus a peer set of the<br \/>\nUSA, Germany, France and the Netherlands<\/i><\/b><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\"><b>British factory<br \/>\nworkers are working with roughly half the machinery, equipment, robots and IT<br \/>\nsystems that their American, German, French and Dutch counterparts have.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">Of<br \/>\ncourse they produce less per hour. They\u2019re working with one hand tied behind<br \/>\ntheir back. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ippr.org\/media-office\/revealed-uk-business-investment-second-lowest-in-g7\"><span style=\"color: #0563c1; line-height: 107%;\">IPPR press release,<br \/>\nApril 2026<\/span><\/a><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEhCIssD0jC9G7LdL2re-Qp8NKlVEIwHKb9a2wJJ6PYAedpMQVwHLN_MBeaiurecHDVKPRhCVa5YHBqLh6gCMmWyprJ0_W6oVdwsgFo5pUpRx3jEUJmPPoJvuSHyEJiGQMUQR5NL9aTTVNFkTLAnuifRjgES3kmq0xpw4TwAaGqGCVD0tp4hF6Btcso4j8R_\/s967\/Investment.png\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"421\" data-original-width=\"967\" height=\"247\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEhCIssD0jC9G7LdL2re-Qp8NKlVEIwHKb9a2wJJ6PYAedpMQVwHLN_MBeaiurecHDVKPRhCVa5YHBqLh6gCMmWyprJ0_W6oVdwsgFo5pUpRx3jEUJmPPoJvuSHyEJiGQMUQR5NL9aTTVNFkTLAnuifRjgES3kmq0xpw4TwAaGqGCVD0tp4hF6Btcso4j8R_\/w568-h247\/Investment.png\" width=\"568\"\/><\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium;\">Somehow this fact made me come back to Greece again &#8211; They were using the state of the art equipment, three thousand years ago.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium;\">But today, they sit significantly lower than any of the countries mentioned, including the UK (Greece is sub 18%, and they&#8217;re more than half less productive than the Dutch or the Americans).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">And it gets<br \/>\nworse on intangibles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\"><b>The US invests 6.7% of GDP per year in software, IP, data<br \/>\nand organisational know-how. The UK invests just 4.2%.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">That gap is hugely<br \/>\nsignificant because intangibles \u2014 software, design, brand value, training,<br \/>\nR&amp;D \u2014 are increasingly what drives productivity in a modern economy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\"><b><i>The US<br \/>\nhas been quietly out-investing us in the very things that compound the fastest,<br \/>\nand the gap is widening, not closing.<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">Then there\u2019s<br \/>\nthe on-the-job training I mentioned. The hard numbers: <b><i>British businesses spend<br \/>\nroughly half the EU average per worker on training and development.<\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">Anecdotally, when I attended a US\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/damore-mckim.northeastern.edu\/\"><span style=\"color: #01ffff;\">business school<\/span><\/a>, half of the MBA part-time class were <a href=\"https:\/\/damore-mckim.northeastern.edu\/cooperative-education\/employer-faq\/\"><span style=\"color: #01ffff;\">funded by their employer<\/span><\/a>, and around a ten percent of the full time.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">80% provide financial support to employees pursuing MBA programs specifically (Georgetown CEW \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mba.com\/exams\/gmat-exam\"><span style=\"color: #01ffff;\">GMAC<\/span><\/a>).\u00a0<\/span><span>In the UK, that would be unthinkable.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium;\"><span>And that, ultimately, is the point: if we invest less in our people, our tools, our skills and our future, we shouldn\u2019t be surprised when productivity flatlines.\u00a0<\/span><span>One way to look at this problem, is that the countries that out-innovate us are simply out-investing us.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\"><b>The<br \/>\nChartered Management Institute reports that around 82% of UK training spend is<br \/>\nfunded by employers themselves<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">\u2014 and naturally, employers prioritise senior and<br \/>\nprofessional roles, not the middle managers and frontline workers who actually<br \/>\nrun day-to-day operations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">And that is born out anecdotally by myself. I got a tremendous amount of on-the-job training when I worked in the USA. In the UK, I&#8217;ve had virtually zero.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">I have had an immense amount of training in the UK &#8211; but almost all of it has been self-funded, and self-directed. So my anecdotal story of working in the UK fits the data.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\"><b><i>The result is a workforce that doesn\u2019t get developed<br \/>\nbeyond what each individual chooses to invest in themselves.<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">In the<br \/>\nStates, every employer I worked for had a real training budget \u2014 actual money<br \/>\nset aside to develop me. In the UK, that is rare, or even non-existant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium;\"><b>Poor<br \/>\nmanagement<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium;\">If I\u2019m<br \/>\nhonest, this is the one that surprised me most when I started digging. I\u2019d<br \/>\nalways vaguely assumed British management was a bit stuffy but basically fine.<br \/>\nIt turns out, it isn\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">There\u2019s a<br \/>\nserious field of academic work measuring management quality across countries,<br \/>\ncalled the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/worldmanagementsurvey.org\/\"><span style=\"color: #0563c1; line-height: 107%;\">World Management Survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">. It\u2019s been running since 2002, led<br \/>\nby Nick Bloom (Stanford), John Van Reenen (LSE\/MIT), and Raffaella Sadun<br \/>\n(Harvard).\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">They\u2019ve trained interviewers to score firms across 18 management<br \/>\npractices \u2014 things like target-setting, monitoring, talent development, and how<br \/>\nfirms deal with poor performers \u2014 using structured interviews with middle<br \/>\nmanagers. <b><i>They\u2019ve now covered around 13,000 firms in 35 countries.<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">The results<br \/>\naren\u2019t kind to us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%; mso-no-proof: yes;\"><!--[if gte vml 1]><v:shape\n id=\"Management_x0020_chart\" o:spid=\"_x0000_i1025\" type=\"#_x0000_t75\" style=\"width:6in;\n height:336pt;visibility:visible;mso-wrap-style:square\">\n <v:imagedata src=\"https:\/\/rudylearningaboutstartups.blogspot.com\/2026\/05\/file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Rudol\/AppData\/Local\/Temp\/msohtmlclip1\/01\/clip_image007.png\"\n  o:title=\"\"\/>\n<\/v:shape><![endif]--><!--[if !vml]--><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/a\/AVvXsEjfGXHXfhIFX-aI_-3Qz-bcV-SNhhEXiYZyhPEW31qQGexfFR2st0s13rnRUc2N5098xZhik2W2ystbyEXJfDz7iIw_VtblfzsbzWQNd-u8gm7OrEyizmrqgut3lbDRUeqYMGJPpzuYD0PJXzdRacTs5GSGeVHZKog4ixbMyzZ5xNBv1rO-h1REU6eoGZMo=w542-h422\" v:shapes=\"Management_x0020_chart\" width=\"542\"\/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">The US comes<br \/>\nin first. Then Japan, Germany, Sweden and Canada. The Netherlands ranks sixth,<br \/>\nat 3.04 out of 5. The UK ranks seventh, at 2.95. The gap to the Netherlands is<br \/>\nsmall.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><b><i>The gap to the US is roughly half a standard deviation <\/i><\/b>\u2014 which sounds<br \/>\ntechnical, but Andy Haldane (then chief economist at the Bank of England)<br \/>\ntranslated it in a memorable 2018 speech, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bankofengland.co.uk\/-\/media\/boe\/files\/speech\/2018\/the-uks-productivity-problem-hub-no-spokes-speech-by-andy-haldane\"><span style=\"color: #0563c1; line-height: 107%;\">The UK\u2019s Productivity<br \/>\nProblem: Hub No Spokes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\"><b><i>UK management practices, he said, are about half a standard deviation<br \/>\nlower than comparator countries, and these management skills are statistically<br \/>\nsignificant determinants of productivity.<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">But here\u2019s<br \/>\nwhat really matters: the headline average understates the problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\"><b>Haldane<br \/>\nshowed that the UK has TWICE the share of firms with low management scores<br \/>\ncompared to the US and Germany.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">We have plenty of world-class firms at the<br \/>\nfrontier \u2014 but a long, fat tail of badly-managed companies that other countries<br \/>\nsimply don\u2019t have to anything like the same extent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">Notice in the chart below, how UK productivity growth has plummetted from 1980-2007 (2.2%) to\u00a0 2008-2023 (0.4%). That&#8217;s a productivity growth drop of 5.5x.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">If a company exhibited that trend, leadership would be asking some serious questions. It would be what the americans call &#8216;A come to jesus moment&#8217;.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/a\/AVvXsEiZdahaPT3p16mVlS6kAOxYRqAnxm7DOQV6C5wlor8pX1MwDMYFF5gmCo_-nbsdbyx9BeM6q9S45Cn51e4KjWZIkm1b15OGja7bPm3M1QdO-KLcUaObNb8oVfjAolVfLW8_aEA4XEHM13zJYuFTLFcXv-1em9pVFu6LMNVHho8HePaR-_v5KwpzaQr80eut\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-original-height=\"1173\" data-original-width=\"2232\" height=\"274\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/a\/AVvXsEiZdahaPT3p16mVlS6kAOxYRqAnxm7DOQV6C5wlor8pX1MwDMYFF5gmCo_-nbsdbyx9BeM6q9S45Cn51e4KjWZIkm1b15OGja7bPm3M1QdO-KLcUaObNb8oVfjAolVfLW8_aEA4XEHM13zJYuFTLFcXv-1em9pVFu6LMNVHho8HePaR-_v5KwpzaQr80eut=w522-h274\" width=\"522\"\/><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\"><br \/>And that tail has been<br \/>\ngrowing. Between 1997 and 2023, the number of UK firms below the 25th<br \/>\nproductivity percentile nearly doubled, from around 444,500 to 873,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">Why? My<br \/>\ntheory \u2014 and this is where it gets uncomfortable \u2014 is that we\u2019ve created a<br \/>\nclass of \u201caccidental managers.\u201d The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.managers.org.uk\/knowledge-and-insights\/news\/four-in-five-managers-are-accidental\/\"><span style=\"color: #0563c1; line-height: 107%;\">Chartered Management<br \/>\nInstitute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"> estimated<br \/>\nin 2023 that 82% of UK managers had no formal training before being put in<br \/>\ncharge of people. In 2019 the figure was 68%. So it\u2019s getting worse, not<br \/>\nbetter.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">The<br \/>\ndownstream economic effects are brutal. A UK SME generates roughly \u00a3147,000 of<br \/>\noutput per worker per year. A German SME generates \u00a3335,000. That\u2019s more than<br \/>\ndouble.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\"><b>A UK business with ten employees could theoretically add \u00a31.9 million<br \/>\nin annual turnover if it operated at German productivity levels.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">Now think<br \/>\nabout how many small British firms are scraping by, when with better management<br \/>\nthey\u2019d be thriving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">How much of<br \/>\nthe international productivity gap does management actually explain?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\"><b><i>Bloom and<br \/>\ncolleagues estimated in 2016 that management practices account for roughly a<br \/>\nthird of the productivity gap between the US and other countries.<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">Management isn\u2019t a soft factor.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s a major component of why the UK is falling behind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">When I<br \/>\nworked in the US, most of my managers had been trained \u2014 through MBAs, or<br \/>\nrotational programmes, or formal leadership development.The Netherlands has also has built-in formalised training for all employee levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEi2Dgu0qMjFYLrkCuJo0QOnvXc_egKVP3hWa1WbLlyTemTbKpIi1ST0hF8bPtca0JVFXvXCrw0uKBHbsHgKgI_1ICdjevqJCdnkLrAt9fKKQMgsmgX72GSjCAN4yW7P3QUyfmU9wZbFjphJTQbr1EGv-bnYDj73avwe1Hpx2lDvDCJBXPbm7CGxd9ZAOwPc\/s1492\/cognitive_diversity_chart.png\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1372\" data-original-width=\"1492\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEi2Dgu0qMjFYLrkCuJo0QOnvXc_egKVP3hWa1WbLlyTemTbKpIi1ST0hF8bPtca0JVFXvXCrw0uKBHbsHgKgI_1ICdjevqJCdnkLrAt9fKKQMgsmgX72GSjCAN4yW7P3QUyfmU9wZbFjphJTQbr1EGv-bnYDj73avwe1Hpx2lDvDCJBXPbm7CGxd9ZAOwPc\/w544-h500\/cognitive_diversity_chart.png\" width=\"544\"\/><\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">Lack of<br \/>\ncognitive diversity <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">Scott Page<br \/>\n(Michigan, complex systems) published the foundational paper with Lu Hong in<br \/>\nPNAS in 2004 <b><i>showing, with proofs, that a randomly-selected group of diverse<br \/>\nproblem-solvers outperforms a group composed of the highest-ability individual<br \/>\nsolvers, on sufficiently complex tasks<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium; line-height: 107%;\">Page shows that various types of<br \/>\ncognitive diversity \u2014 differences in how people perceive, encode, analyze, and<br \/>\norganize the same information and experiences \u2014 are linked to better outcomes.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.0403723101\">https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.0403723101<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-end=\"1043\" data-start=\"924\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium;\">My experience working in both the USA and the Netherlands is that neither country treats conventional wisdom as sacred.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-end=\"1399\" data-start=\"1048\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium;\"><b>In America especially, the belief that one person with a better idea can overturn the status quo sits at the heart of the culture.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-end=\"1399\" data-start=\"1048\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium;\">I think that used to be the case in the UK. But I&#8217;m not so sure anymore in the last fifteen years or so. It seems like UK companies are more risk-averse than they used to be.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-end=\"1399\" data-start=\"1048\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium;\">From the revolution against King George III to <em data-end=\"1237\" data-start=\"1226\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moneyball:_The_Art_of_Winning_an_Unfair_Game\"><span style=\"color: #01ffff;\">Moneyball<\/span><\/a><\/em>, where a young economist transformed baseball by ignoring decades of accepted thinking, Americans have long admired people who challenge established assumptions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-end=\"1603\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-start=\"1404\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium;\">That culture doesn&#8217;t just produce entrepreneurs and innovators. It creates an environment where different viewpoints are encouraged, disagreement is accepted, and new ideas are more likely to emerge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Brad Pitt Discovers Jonah Hill\u2019s Radical Baseball Theory | MONEYBALL\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hIYZoUg1gg8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: medium;\">Interestingly, the Netherlands, despite its many differences, resembles the USA in one important way: Typically everyone speaks up.
