Why this explosion happened, who pushed it<br \/>\nforward, and how it\u2019s reshaping lives across the country are the central<br \/>\nquestions of Danny Funt\u2019s excellent, deeply researched book <i>Everybody Loses<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">Right from the start, Funt makes clear that this moment<br \/>\ndidn\u2019t arrive by accident. It came from what he calls \u201can extraordinarily risky<br \/>\ngamble: that a nation of sports fans would be better off as a nation of sports<br \/>\ngamblers.\u201d The rest of the book is a meticulous, often unsettling exploration<br \/>\nof that gamble\u2019s consequences. Funt weaves together stories of addicted<br \/>\nbettors, interviews with current and former sportsbook employees, and a close<br \/>\nlook at how FanDuel and DraftKings have effectively become a duopoly controlling<br \/>\nthe vast majority of the industry. Every thread reinforces the central idea:<br \/>\nthis is a wager with enormous human and societal stakes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">One of the most compelling sections examines how sportsbooks<br \/>\ntreat their two most valuable customer groups \u2014 the consistent losers and the<br \/>\nrare big winners. The former are courted relentlessly, especially those who<br \/>\nlose heavily and often. The latter, labeled \u201cVIPs,\u201d are showered with perks<br \/>\nthat border on fantasy fulfillment. If you\u2019re a baseball fan whose team just<br \/>\nreached the World Series and you\u2019ve wagered at least $5,000 a week, you might<br \/>\nfind yourself whisked to the Fall Classic on the company\u2019s dime. But if you<br \/>\nstart winning too much, the tone shifts quickly: frozen accounts, revoked<br \/>\nbonuses, vanished VIP privileges. Funt makes clear that the system is designed<br \/>\nso that bettors, no matter how savvy, rarely come out ahead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">Importantly, Funt doesn\u2019t place all the blame on the<br \/>\nsportsbooks themselves. He traces how professional leagues \u2014 once staunch<br \/>\nopponents of gambling \u2014 reversed course when they realized how much money was<br \/>\nbeing left on the table and how widespread betting already was. He also details<br \/>\nthe political and legal forces that accelerated the industry\u2019s rise, most<br \/>\nnotably the Supreme Court\u2019s 2018 <i>Murphy v. NCAA<\/i> decision, which opened<br \/>\nthe door for states to legalize sports betting at a rapid pace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">These examples represent only a fraction of the ground Funt<br \/>\ncovers. <i>Everybody Loses<\/i> is comprehensive without ever feeling dense, and<br \/>\naccessible without sacrificing nuance.
