</picture>

Image Comics is bringing back one of the strangest and most ambitious Ice Cream Man experiments yet, as Ice Cream Man: The Mortal Coil Shuffle returns in a newly redesigned edition featuring a Silver Age-inspired presentation.

The sold-out comics experiment from W. Maxwell Prince, Martín Morazzo, Chris O’Halloran, and Good Old Neon is getting another deal.

Rather than a standard comic book, Ice Cream Man: The Mortal Coil Shuffle tells its story through a custom-designed deck of 55 cards, combining sequential storytelling, visual experimentation, and the unsettling tone that has become a hallmark of the long-running Image Comics horror series.

The original printing disappeared quickly, leaving some readers without a chance to experience the format firsthand. Now, Image Comics is dealing the story again with a newly designed edition that pays tribute to comic book history while preserving the strange mechanics that made the first release so unusual.

Readers can find more details through the official Image Comics announcement.

Calling The Mortal Coil Shuffle unconventional barely begins to describe it.

Instead of turning traditional pages, readers move through a deck of 55 individually illustrated cards. When placed in sequence, the cards form a complete Ice Cream Man story.

But the cards do more than simply divide panels.

Some advance the narrative.

Others behave like strange objects inside the story itself.

There are visual riffs on tarot cards, credit cards, flash cards, and traditional playing cards, with the entire deck built around the idea that the physical format is part of the storytelling.

That makes The Mortal Coil Shuffle less like a standard single issue and more like a comics artifact.

The format asks readers to interact with the story in a different way, turning something as familiar as shuffling, drawing, and holding cards into part of the reading experience.

The original edition featured what Image described as a fantasy-forward visual design.

For the new printing, the creative team is taking things in another direction with a Silver Age-inspired aesthetic.

The story remains the same experiment, but the presentation is being refreshed with a new custom design, including new card backs and packaging.

That approach is particularly fitting for a series like Ice Cream Man.

The title has always been comfortable playing with comics history, genre conventions, visual language, and storytelling structure. Reframing the same unusual issue through a different design tradition adds another layer to the experiment.

Writer W. Maxwell Prince said the decision to produce another edition came directly from demand after the first deck sold out, noting that many longtime readers never had the opportunity to experience the story.

Since its launch, Ice Cream Man has earned a reputation for treating the anthology format as a laboratory.

One issue might operate as psychological horror.

Another might shift into formal experimentation.

Others break chronology, genre, point of view, or even the expected shape of the comic itself.

The Mortal Coil Shuffle pushes that philosophy about as far as possible.

Instead of asking how a comic page can be structured differently, it asks whether the comic needs to be a bound comic at all.

That distinction matters.

The project does not merely use playing cards as a gimmick attached to a conventional story. The cards are the storytelling mechanism.

Their order matters.

Their visual identity matters.

Their relationship to chance, games, prediction, value, and fate matters.

That makes the physical object inseparable from the narrative.

A format this experimental could easily collapse into novelty without a strong visual identity.

Fortunately, Ice Cream Man veterans Martín Morazzo and Chris O’Halloran already understand the visual rhythm of the series.

Morazzo’s precise, frequently unsettling linework has long given Ice Cream Man its deceptively clean appearance, while O’Halloran’s colors help shift otherwise ordinary moments into psychological discomfort.

Their work with Good Old Neon allows the card deck to move between narrative sequences and stranger standalone visual concepts without completely disconnecting from the larger world of the series.

That consistency is important because Ice Cream Man often works by making something familiar feel subtly wrong.

A neighborhood.

A family.

A dessert truck.

A card game.

Everything looks recognizable until the story starts twisting the context.

The playing-card format also fits the themes the series has explored for years.

Chance.

Mortality.

Fate.

Regret.

Bad decisions.

The illusion of control.

Those ideas naturally overlap with games of cards, where players are constantly balancing luck against strategy while working with incomplete information.

In Ice Cream Man, that uncertainty becomes considerably darker.

Readers may recognize the language of familiar games—Go Fish, Draw Four, War, folding a hand—but those playful associations become another doorway into the comic’s particular brand of existential horror.

That contrast has always been one of the series’ strengths.

Something harmless becomes threatening.

Something nostalgic becomes disturbing.

Something ordinary becomes impossible to interpret the same way again.

The new edition should also appeal to collectors who enjoy unusual comic formats.

The custom box, redesigned cards, and alternate aesthetic make this second printing more than a simple reissue.

It becomes another version of the object itself.

That could make the first and second editions interesting companion pieces for collectors, particularly because their visual identities are deliberately different.

For readers who missed the original release, however, the more important point is much simpler:

There is another opportunity to actually experience the story.

Title: Ice Cream Man: The Mortal Coil Shuffle, New Edition Ice Cream Man: The Mortal Coil Shuffle is exactly the kind of project that explains why this series continues to stand apart.

It takes something readers understand instinctively—the physical language of a card deck—and rebuilds the mechanics of comics around it.

The result is part horror story, part design experiment, part collectible, and part challenge to the idea of what a comic book needs to look like.

The new edition’s Silver Age-inspired presentation gives longtime readers another reason to look at the experiment, while newcomers finally get another opportunity to experience one of the series’ most unusual releases.

For Ice Cream Man, even the format can become part of the nightmare.

Did you pick up the original Mortal Coil Shuffle, or will the new Image Comics edition be your first chance to experience the 55-card story?

Let us know in the comments.

Follow Comic Book Addicts for more comic book news, previews, reviews, collected editions, and creator announcements.

Website | Instagram | Facebook | Tumblr | Pinterest | X / Twitter

A Comic Told Through 55 Cards
