Roads become slower, scenic stops quickly multiply, and you’ll soon realise that a two-hour drive in Scotland rarely takes just two hours.

Having recently explored Scotland by campervan, I came away convinced that this is a country best experienced slowly. Give yourself time to pull over for the views, stop at unexpected castles, linger beside a loch, and take the scenic route whenever possible.

Our original plan was actually to spend two full weeks exploring Scotland, including the legendary North Coast 500. Unfortunately, due to an unexpected health issue during our trip, we had to cut our itinerary short and weren’t able to complete the NC500 as planned. While we did manage to explore Edinburgh, Glasgow, the Highlands, and the Isle of Skye, the NC500 remains firmly on our list for a future visit.

So, the itineraries below combine both our personal experience travelling through Scotland and the route we had carefully planned before the trip.

So how much time do you actually need?

In my opinion, one week is enough to experience some of Scotland’s highlights, but two weeks allows you to explore the Highlands properly, including the Isle of Skye and the legendary North Coast 500. If you can do 3 weeks, then nothing like it! The NC 500 has enough sights for you to plan a slower travel rather than rush through.

Here’s my recommended itinerary:

1 week in Scotland

Day 1-3: Edinburgh

No first-time trip to Scotland would be complete without Edinburgh.

Three days gives you enough time to explore the city’s highlights without rushing:

Edinburgh Castle

Royal Mile

Holyrood Palace

Arthur’s Seat

Dean Village

Victoria Street

Calton Hill

Edinburgh’s incredible food and pub scene

While many visitors squeeze Edinburgh into a day or two, I think the city deserves more. Beyond the major landmarks, it’s the kind of place where simply wandering the old streets becomes part of the experience.

Day 4: Glasgow

I’ll be honest—if you’re short on time, Glasgow is probably the most skippable stop on this itinerary.

That said, there’s one very good reason to include it: car and campervan rentals are often noticeably cheaper in Glasgow than in Edinburgh. Since the two cities are only around an hour apart by train, it can make a lot of financial sense to travel from Edinburgh to Glasgow, spend a day exploring the city, and then pick up your rental vehicle before heading into the Highlands.

Compared to Edinburgh, Glasgow feels younger, livelier, and less touristy. While it may not have the same historic charm as Scotland’s capital, it has a character all its own.

If you decide to spend a day here, some worthwhile stops include:

Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum

Glasgow Cathedral

Merchant City

Riverside Museum

The West End

Even if you’re not particularly interested in the city itself, I’d still recommend considering Glasgow as the starting point for your road trip. The savings on a rental car or campervan can be significant, and it breaks up the journey nicely before you hit the road and begin exploring the Highlands.

Read my post on Renting a Campervan in Scotland: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

Day 5: Loch Lomond & The Trossachs → Glen Coe

Driving time (excluding stops): Approx. 3-4 hours

Leave Glasgow early and head north towards Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, the gateway to the Scottish Highlands.

Luss & Loch Lomond

Your first stop should be the charming conservation village of Luss, located on the western shores of Loch Lomond.

Allow around 1-2 hours to explore the Luss Heritage Trail, wander between the stone cottages, and enjoy a leisurely walk along the shores of Loch Lomond. It’s a peaceful introduction to the Scottish Highlands and one of the prettiest villages you’ll encounter on your trip.

Rannoch Moor Scenic Drive

From Luss, continue north through some of Scotland’s most spectacular scenery.

The drive across Rannoch Moor takes around 45 minutes, but you’ll want to allow considerably longer. This vast wilderness of lochs, mountains, peat bogs, and open landscapes is one of the most scenic drives in Scotland and deserves plenty of photo stops along the way.

This is where Scotland really starts to feel wild.

Glen Coe Valley

From Rannoch Moor, the road eventually descends into Glen Coe, one of the most iconic and dramatic landscapes in the country.

I’d recommend allowing at least 3-4 hours to properly explore the valley.

Three Sisters Viewpoint

One of Scotland’s most famous viewpoints, offering spectacular views of three towering ridges carved out by ancient glaciers.

This is usually the busiest stop in Glen Coe, but it’s unmissable.

Loch Achtriochtan

Just a few minutes further along the road lies Loch Achtriochtan, one of the classic postcard views of Glen Coe.

On a calm day, the surrounding mountains are beautifully reflected in the water.

Tip: End the day with a sauna experience at Wilderness Sauna @ Woodlands

Overnight Stay

Caolasnacon Caravan & Camping Park

Located on the shores of Loch Leven, approximately 20 minutes from Glen Coe village, this was one of our favourite campsites in Scotland.

The setting is beautiful, with loch views and mountain backdrops all around. One thing to keep in mind is that the campsite operates on a first-come, first-served basis, so arriving earlier in the afternoon is advisable, especially during peak season.

Day 6: Glen Coe → Fort William → Glenfinnan → Eilean Donan Castle → Inverness

Driving time (excluding stops): Approx. 4.5 hours

After spending the previous day exploring Glen Coe, continue north towards Inverness, with several iconic Highland stops along the way.

Fort William

Driving time from Caolasnacon: 25–30 minutes

Begin the day in Fort William, often referred to as the outdoor capital of Scotland.
