Only, according to locals, it\u2019s like this every day- 4 days a week, 4 hours a day.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"rKr3c LXM-U _8Fwvf GywVr\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-wsblp7022\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"jpwv0\"><span>When my turn came, I popped a squat in front of the tiny ordering window so I could make eye contact with the woman taking my order. There\u2019s no dining room, no counter, no pretense\u2014just a little window in a little red shack that\u2019s been slinging hot dogs since 1959.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"rKr3c LXM-U _8Fwvf GywVr\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-xoujr7076\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"jpwv0\"><span>This wasn\u2019t the first time I tried Flo\u2019s relish. Truth be told, about 12 years ago, my wife ordered me a jar of the relish for my annual \u201cregional food\u201d Christmas gift. I\u2019ve been a food nerd for a while, and I gotta say, I didn\u2019t love it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"rKr3c LXM-U _8Fwvf GywVr\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-loft67104\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"jpwv0\"><span>I had a plan and ordered with intention\u2014<\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>the $4 House Dog.<\/span><\/em><span> A natural-casing wiener with Flo\u2019s Relish, mayo and celery salt on a New England-style top-split bun. Sounds normal, except Flo\u2019s relish isn\u2019t really a relish\u2014not in the way you or I think of it, at least. It\u2019s takeout only\u2014no tables, no chairs. <\/span><strong style=\"font-weight:700\"><span>Route 1 plays the role of dining room, car hoods double as tables.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"rKr3c LXM-U _8Fwvf GywVr\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-od3pg7194\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"jpwv0\"><span>I unwrapped the package already knowing what to expect. The steamed dog was draped in a dark, chutney-like molasses-and-onion concoction, something a fifteen-year-old goth latchkey kid might have made for dinner in the \u201990s. Except peeking through all that darkness were streaks of white mayo and a dusting of celery salt. WTF was I about to put in my mouth?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"rKr3c LXM-U _8Fwvf GywVr\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-un0q87311\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"jpwv0\"><span>I could smell the sweetness as I bit down. Then, with each bite, my preconceived expectations disappeared. Something magical was happening. The fattiness of the mayo cut through the sweetness, leaving behind the balanced sweet-and-savory bite of the onion, while the celery salt reminded me what a perfect hot dog condiment it is. A decade ago I tried a spoonful of Flo\u2019s, but today I experienced it and\u2014holy shit, I get it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"rKr3c LXM-U _8Fwvf GywVr\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-d2s8f7405\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"jpwv0\"><span>I wanted to be like a local, so I took a sip of my ice-cold Moxie\u2014Maine\u2019s celebrated soda, aka the <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foodigenous.com\/post\/malort-the-unofficial-spirit-of-chicago\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"Z5m1L N-2r5\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><strong style=\"font-weight:700\"><span style=\"color:#000000;text-decoration:inherit\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>Mal\u00f6rt<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/strong><\/a><span> of soft drinks. I forced a swalloe, then discreetly looked around before relieving Route 1 of its thirst. Then cracked open the Brisk.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"k8F11 u-NEn _8Fwvf GywVr\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-1nfl9656\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span aria-hidden=\"https:\/\/www.foodigenous.com\/post\/true\" id=\"a-family-legacy-1nfl9656\"\/><span class=\"DPXo6\"><span>A Family Legacy<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"rKr3c LXM-U _8Fwvf GywVr\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-9oki87529\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"jpwv0\"><span>There actually was a Flo. Florence Stacy to be exact, a schoolteacher, who in 1959, left her one-room schoolhouse for the bright lights of a Cape Neddick Maine, for a one-room hot dog stand and never looked back. She quickly built a local following with the introduction of the unusual condiment and worked the &#8220;hutt&#8221; until passing it down to her son and daughter-in-law in the \u201970s. Yes, they also have a green relish, but you\u2019ve already driven all the way to Maine\u2014why bother?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"rKr3c LXM-U _8Fwvf GywVr\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-r9yad7652\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"jpwv0\"><span>I\u2019m a Jersey guy to the core, and <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ruttshut.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"Z5m1L N-2r5\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><strong style=\"font-weight:700\"><span style=\"color:#000000;text-decoration:inherit\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>Rutt\u2019s<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/strong><\/a><span> will always be the standard-bearer. As a standalone relish, for me, there\u2019s no comparison.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"rKr3c LXM-U _8Fwvf GywVr\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-tq3uc4045\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"jpwv0\"><strong style=\"font-weight:700\"><span>But I was wrong about Flo\u2019s.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"rKr3c LXM-U _8Fwvf GywVr\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-d35wg7685\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"jpwv0\"><span>I first tried Flo\u2019s from a jar. What I didn\u2019t understand at the time, was that the relish was only part of the experience. Mayo, celery salt, steamed dog, soft bun, Route 1 and the hood of a car\u2014it all somehow really works together.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"rKr3c LXM-U _8Fwvf GywVr\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-r344z4103\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"jpwv0\"><span>And, it&#8217;s just\u2026 better in Maine.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"rKr3c LXM-U _8Fwvf GywVr\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-fsp9y4133\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"jpwv0\"><span>I see you Flo&#8217;s.
