While the people around you are already sending messages home, the icon on your screen is still spinning. The frustration that comes with that is reasonable, and you start to think it’s because of the eSIM or SIM you purchased for the trip. But it’s mostly because of where you’re standing when you switch your phone back on, not the plan you bought.

The connectivity issue the moment you land

Before, anytime you traveled and wanted to stay connected meant you either needed to visit a SIM kiosk or pay high roaming fees. But that’s changed fast. eSIMs have become popular among travelers, and shipments of eSIM-enabled devices are expected to top 633 million in 2026. So now, when people land at their destination, they assume their phones will work the second they step off the plane. When it doesn’t happen within a few seconds, it can feel like something’s wrong. Usually it isn’t.

Your phone is searching for a network it’s cleared to use in a place it’s never been, and that takes a moment. The airport is the hardest place for it to go smoothly. Thousands of passengers are all reaching for their phones at once, and the towers around the terminal take that surge together.

The trouble with airport Wi-Fi

Most people reach for the free airport Wi-Fi next, and it usually doesn’t give them the instant connection they need. Most airport networks first send you to a login page that wants your email, a room number, or a tap through some terms before you’re connected. That step alone can stall on a phone that hasn’t finished waking up its radios. Even once you’re through, the speed can be disappointing.

An Ookla analysis of fifty major US airports found that cellular networks outperformed airport Wi-Fi at 45 of the 50 airports measured. A lot of airport hardware still runs Wi-Fi standards from over a decade ago. Speeds swing from one terminal to the next, and a connection shared by a whole arrivals hall slows down just when everyone needs it. Airport Wi-Fi is fine once you’re settled at the gate, but you can’t rely on it for getting online the moment you land. Some portals won’t even load until you open a browser to trigger the redirect, which adds another delay when you’d rather be moving. Airport portals also tend to log you out after a while, so you’re back at the login screen every time you move between terminals.

How eSIM activation works

It helps to know what happens when you install an eSIM. First, it loads a profile onto your phone. But the connection only starts when your device finds and registers with a partner carrier at your destination. That needs a real signal from a nearby tower. Right after landing, a few things can slow that first handshake. The terminal might sit in a weak coverage spot, the phone might still be waking from airplane mode, or the closest tower might be swamped by the same crowd you got off the plane with.

In some airports, the connection lands in seconds. In others, it takes a few minutes while the phone works out which local network to join. A slow start rarely means the profile is broken. Usually, it’s just your phone doing the ordinary work of joining a foreign network for the first time, shaped by the conditions around you. An eSIM has one small edge here, since there’s no physical card to insert or swap. Everything’s already loaded, so the phone can start hunting for a network right away. That first connection can also land on a slower layer while the phone keeps looking, then move up to 4G or 5G once it’s fully registered.

Why crowded airports affect every provider

When one airport has connection trouble, it usually affects every provider at once, since they all run on the same local networks. Hanoi is a good example. Across late 2024 and early 2025, travelers on all kinds of eSIM and roaming plans reported slow or failed first connections at Noi Bai International. The causes were structural, not about any one brand. Heavy congestion, longer international routing, and activation timing all piled up at once. The congestion is easy to verify. Noi Bai is crowded enough during peak periods that Vietnam has approved a second airport for the capital.

When a terminal is that busy, its towers are under strain, and every roaming device pulling from them feels it. Big transfer hubs like Bangkok, Istanbul, and Delhi can see the same crunch during peak hours. So this isn’t one company falling short. Arrival connectivity depends on the place and the moment, and any traveler can plan around it.

How to get online before you land

The most reliable fix is to set up your data before you reach the airport. Install and activate your eSIM at home, or during a layover once you’re within range of a supported network. This way, the profile is ready and only needs to find a signal when you land. Many plans let you install ahead and start the clock when you choose. It’s worth screenshotting your plan’s setup details too, so you’re not digging for them on a bad connection later.

Doing it on your home Wi-Fi also means any big profile downloads finish before you fly, instead of fighting for a weak signal at the gate. Your own cellular data is a better bet than the terminal Wi-Fi anyway. Beyond the speed gap, security officials have warned travelers not to enter sensitive information over free airport Wi-Fi.

Public networks make it easy for data to be intercepted. If your phone still shows nothing after landing, give it five to fifteen minutes of normal use, toggle airplane mode once to force a fresh search. If that doesn’t help, pick a carrier by hand in your settings instead of leaving it on automatic. Most of the time, it sorts itself out before you reach the taxi rank.

Where a good eSIM service fits

The plan you travel with still makes a difference once you’re on the ground. As an eSIM service, Saily connects through established mobile network operators in each destination, giving travelers local 4G and 5G access without managing roaming agreements themselves. There’s no kiosk to find and no counter to queue at after a long flight.

Saily plans also include unlimited hotspot sharing, so you can bring a laptop or a travel companion online through one data plan once your phone is connected. If you like to fine-tune things, Saily lets you select networks by hand, adjust APN settings, and configure your device to optimize signal anywhere. And if a question comes up on the road, Saily offers 24/7 live chat support in the app.

How to land already connected

Getting online after landing comes down to a few small habits you can practice every time you travel. Set up and activate your data before you land, so your phone only has to find a signal instead of building a plan from scratch. Treat airport Wi-Fi as a backup for light tasks, and don’t rely entirely on it, especially when it comes to accessing sensitive data.

Give your device a few minutes and a quick airplane-mode reset before you assume something’s wrong. Try switching to manual network selection if the automatic pick stalls. A dependable eSIM service like Saily keeps your connection ready when you are, so you walk out of the terminal already online.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
