Photography, Jon Day

Colour is often thought of as just something decorative, but it has a purpose that goes beyond how it looks, something I have come to understand after more than 25 years as a creative director and stylist and coming from a neurodivergent family.

Every shade is different, and each one has its own sensory properties. At The Sensory Home®, we promote colour as a tool because we understand how powerful it can be for transforming mood and emotion. We tend to focus on lower-saturation shades, offering an alternative to bold, bright palettes.

Colour directly affects how the central nervous system responds to a space and, in turn, how you feel when you’re in it. Depending on your sensory preferences, colour can help you feel calm and settled, or it can quietly create tension if you’re sensitive to stimulation, and everyone’s sensory response will vary depending on your sensory preferences. The key is understanding what works for you and your emotions, rather than following trends.

A good example of using colour to lower stimulation was The Sensory Retreat project at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, where The Sensory Home® was awarded a Silver medal for the sensory-led space created in collaboration with our plant partner, Beards & Daisies.

The retreat was designed as a low-stimulation environment, using colour and planting to actively shape mood, reduce stress, and make the space feel more supportive. It was organised into five sensory zones — smell, touch, taste, sight, and regulation, allowing visitors to experience firsthand a calm, more nurturing environment.

The predominant colour was green, chosen for its ability to help the body relax and feel at ease. This was supported by a secondary palette of warm neutrals, which softened the space and added balance without increasing visual noise.

<picture class="wp-picture-13075" style="display: contents;"></picture><picture class="wp-picture-13075" style="display: contents;"></picture>

Image showing a room with high contrast

Colour and Well-being

Understanding how the brain processes visual information is key to understanding the relationship between colour and wellbeing. There are many factors to consider beyond the colour itself, including things like contrast (for example, black and white, like the image above), which would be deemed as high contrast) and how colours sit next to one another. Using shades of the same colour (also known as monochrome) within a scheme is often easier on the eyes than high-contrast combinations, such as a dark wall with bright white skirting or ceilings. Strong contrasts create sharp visual changes for the eye to process, whereas softer colour transitions feel more settled and less demanding.

Ordinarily, most people decorate their homes to make a room look nice without considering if it actually ‘feels’ physically comfortable, supports their emotional needs, and aligns with the space’s purpose (what function is the room meant to have). When colours are chosen with care, they become easier to live with rather than something you must manage or adapt to over time. Colour should be used as a supportive tool, and that comes from not only understanding your space but also what you need from it.

Schools are a good example of where colour is often overlooked. Many classrooms are predominantly white, a colour that reflects light, feels sterile, and can be visually overwhelming. It’s often the wrong backdrop for learning. If you need someone to listen, regulate, or take in information, the body first needs to feel calm, receptive, and comfortable. Instead, many classrooms are highly stimulating environments, with strip lighting, hard surfaces, and little sensory softness. Children often arrive already overstimulated and uncomfortable, and then are expected to switch immediately into listening and learning mode.

A recent project that illustrates this was the creation of a Wellbeing Hub at Herts & Essex High School. The space was designed as a calm, low-demand environment where students could step away from the intensity of the school day and regulate before returning to lessons. Colour played a central role, with a muted, grounding palette used to reduce visual stimulation and support emotional comfort. Alongside softer lighting and tactile materials, the space was designed to feel supportive rather than clinical, offering students a place that asks very little of them but offers a great deal in return.

Colour and the Nervous System

Colour (along with scent) is apparently one of the first sensory cues the brain processes, often capturing attention before shape and influencing how we interpret a space. Research on colour and cognitive performance shows that we register colour, contrast, and light levels almost immediately, often before we fully take in the furniture or layout. Certain colours can also influence how alert, focused, or emotionally at ease we feel, as explored within environmental psychology.

Highly saturated or high-contrast colours require more attention. They tell the brain to keep going. Tones that are softer and more balanced make it easier for the body to relax and the mind to rest. Because of this, sensory colours are typically quieter, have more layers, and are easier on the eyes. The Sensory Home Paint for Wellness collection has been designed with that in mind.

Paint/colour is important because it’s what you see first when you walk into a room. It blends into the background noise of everyday life and can make everything else easier to handle, helping create a calm environment.

Blues for Focus and Mental Clarity

People often associate the blue colour with focus and stability. Most of the time, cooler shades help people concentrate by reducing visual noise and calming the space. This can help in bedrooms, study areas, or other places where you need to clear your mind.

Blues in the Graham & Brown x The Sensory Home® collection are meant to feel calming rather than strong. They are made to adapt throughout the day, moving slowly as natural and artificial light comes in. You can explore the full range and its sensory intent through the Graham & Brown Sensory Colour Collection.

Greens and Earthy Tones for Grounding

<picture class="wp-picture-12455" style="display: contents;"></picture><picture class="wp-picture-12455" style="display: contents;"></picture>

Image: Paint for Wellness collection, The Sensory Home® x Graham & Brown, showing Uluwatu from the Gather story. Photography, Jon Day

Green sits in the middle of the visible spectrum, which makes it easier for the eyes to process. That’s one of the reasons why it often feels grounding. Earthy greens and soft plant tones are commonly associated with a sense of calm and stability.

It’s beneficial to have these shades in public areas where people gather or relax; this is why you’ll often see green in hospitals and other care spaces. However, there is still a long way to go in terms of using colour more effectively as a sensory tool. When used correctly, green can make you feel connected without drawing attention, and the colour often acts as a link between calm and function in sensory-aware interiors.

Neutrals for Safety and Predictability

Neutrals are a quiet but important part of how our senses work. They protect the eyes and help the brain feel like it’s in the right place. Many people feel safer in places with regular colours, especially those who experience sensory overload.

While stark white can be cold and illuminating, warm neutrals like soft stone, mushroom, or gentle brown tend to feel warmer. They soften the edges of a room and can reduce glare. These tones are often used in beds and other places where people want to feel safe and at ease.

Deep Greens for Rest and Recovery

When used intentionally, darker greens can make you feel safe. They take in light instead of reflecting it, which can help make places meant for rest feel cosier.

It’s best to use these tones in bedrooms or other quiet places where you want to relax. Deep greens help create a sense of enclosure without being too heavy when used with soft lighting and little contrast.

The key is to be moderate. Most of the time, one wall or clearly marked area is enough to get the benefits without taking over the room.

Building a Low-Stimulation Palette

Making a low-stimulation palette isn’t so much about picking the “right” colour as it is about how the colours work together. A well-balanced colour scheme usually starts with one main colour and a few tones that go well with it.

A helpful approach includes:

Choosing one main colour that feels steady and grounding

Adding one or two supporting tones with similar undertones

Avoiding sharp contrast between walls, trims, and furnishings

Letting texture add interest instead of colour changes

This method reduces visual noise and supports emotional regulation. Thoughtful use of low-stimulation palettes allows a space to feel coherent rather than busy.

Lighting plays a major role here. Warm bulbs and consistent light levels help colours read as intended throughout the day, reducing sensory surprises.

Mistakes People Often Make

<picture class="wp-picture-13076" style="display: contents;"></picture><picture class="wp-picture-13076" style="display: contents;"></picture>

Image: Jemma Watts for The Sensory Home®

People often make the mistake of choosing colours in isolation rather than considering how that colour will respond with existing materials and light in the room. It’s amazing how different a paint sample can look when it’s on a whole wall and exposed to natural light.

Other frequent mistakes include:

Using high-contrast feature walls that dominate the room

Selecting colours based on trends rather than comfort

Ignoring how adjoining rooms affect each other

Slowing the process down and recognising how a space feels at different times of day often leads to better design decisions.

Realising that colour is more than just decoration is essential to understanding colour and its impact on wellbeing. It affects how the body and mind feel in a space. Colour can help you feel calm, focused, and emotionally balanced without demanding too much attention if chosen carefully.

Rooms can feel safe and reliable by carefully using sensory colours, steady neutrals, and grounding greens.
