The horological apocalypse of unimaginable magnitude.<\/p>\n<p>These creators and \u201cwatch gurus\u201d are the same fools who, only a year or<br \/>\ntwo ago, were telling you that investing in watches was a smart way to<br \/>\nmake money \u2014 and have fun.<\/p>\n<p>The truth is simple: all those videos come from small-time flippers on<br \/>\nlimited budgets, whose main activity is YouTubing and e-begging. They<br \/>\nfeed on gossip and stir up controversy. They are in the game for clicks.<\/p>\n<p>As a long-time subscriber to my daily newsletters, you have a perfect<br \/>\nopportunity to see what stock is available, the volumes, prices, trends,<br \/>\n what\u2019s popular \u2014 and what\u2019s not.<\/p>\n<p>We operate in the entry- to mid-price level, with an average sale of<br \/>\npre-owned Swiss watches at around $6,500. So the facts below reflect<br \/>\nthat segment. However, this is the price band with the most market<br \/>\nactivity, and the one of greatest interest to novice and intermediate<br \/>\ncollectors and enthusiasts. As such, it represents overall trends<br \/>\naccurately.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fact 1<\/strong><br \/><strong>Good quality stock, priced attractively, is almost impossible to find.<\/strong><br \/>\n There is a strong demand for extra-fine, pre-loved Omega, Breitling,<br \/>\nCartier, Rolex and numerous other brands. This demand is constant and<br \/>\nunaffected by the economy, interest rates, inflation, or disposable<br \/>\nincome.<br \/>A four-bedroom house on a large block in a leafy suburb with an ocean<br \/>\nview will always find a buyer. And so will a mint 1990s Omega Moonwatch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fact 2<\/strong><br \/><strong>We see no slowdown in the watch trade.<\/strong> Yes, the COVID years were significantly busier, but COVID was a once-in-a-lifetime anomaly.<br \/>We buy and sell multiple watches every day. Most go to newsletter<br \/>\nsubscribers, but many are sold in our shop, through our website, or via<br \/>\npersonal recommendation. Business as usual.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fact 3<\/strong><br \/><strong>We have not seen a major collection liquidation in years.<\/strong><br \/>\n The last time we bought 25 watches in one go, from a single seller, was<br \/>\n well before COVID. Collectors are not selling en masse. If we can buy<br \/>\nfive pieces at once, we consider that a major volume deal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fact 4<\/strong><br \/><strong>Prices of new watches are going up<\/strong> \u2014 and they will continue to go up.<br \/>Manufacturing costs, labour costs, energy costs, and the cost of modern<br \/>\nmachinery in Europe are constantly rising. The Swiss are not newcomers<br \/>\nto horology; they\u2019ve been playing the luxury watch game for two<br \/>\ncenturies. They know when to increase production and when to slow down.<br \/>\nThey\u2019ve been through every financial crisis and are playing a long game.<br \/>A Swiss industrialist is cashed-up, old-money, debt-free, and running a<br \/>\nmanufacturing facility that has specialised in a particular field for<br \/>\ngenerations. The economics of watchmaking will not change even if you<br \/>\nwake up tomorrow to news that Russia has resumed supplying cheap oil and<br \/>\n gas to Europe on a scale never seen before. It won\u2019t happen \u2014 so don\u2019t<br \/>\nhold your breath. Rolex, Patek, Cartier, Omega and Breitling are not<br \/>\ngoing out of business.<br \/>Consequently, prices of fine pre-owned stock will continue to rise.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t waste your time on clueless YouTube fools.
