While the Michigan Vehicle Code does not explicitly address or prohibit the maneuver, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/msp\/services\/safetytips\/traffic-laws-faqs\">Michigan State Police (MSP)<\/a> clarifies that traditional 180-degree turns are permitted provided the driver yields the right-of-way to oncoming traffic and does not drive carelessly. However, making them becomes illegal if a posted traffic control device explicitly bans the movement, on one-way streets, or within a business district governed by the Uniform Traffic Code.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-what-is-a-u-turn\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a U-turn?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A U turn is a 180-degree turn that is used to quickly reverse direction on a road that\u2019s not divided by a median. I\u2019m sure many of us have used this driving maneuver when in a rush or when we think no one is looking.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-what-does-the-michigan-state-police-say-about-whether-u-turns-are-legal-in-michigan\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does the Michigan State Police say about whether U-turns are legal in Michigan?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Michigan State Police takes the position that a U-turn is legal in Michigan so long as it can be done: (1) safely; (2) not carelessly or recklessly; (3) while yielding to other traffic with the right of way; and (4) without violating a local ordinance that prohibits them.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-when-are-u-turns-legal-in-michigan\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">When are U-turns legal in Michigan?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to rules enforced by the Michigan State Police (MSP), traditional 180-degree U-turns are legally permitted on state roads under specific conditions:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Designated Median Crossovers:<\/strong> Vehicles may safely reverse course using directional median cuts, famously known as the \u201cMichigan Left,\u201d which are structurally built directly into the highway flow.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Clear Roads and Visibility:<\/strong> Drivers must possess an unobstructed view of oncoming vehicular traffic with sufficient distance to execute the rotation safely. <\/li>\n<li><strong>No Posted Prohibitions:<\/strong> The intersection or roadway stretch must lack any explicit \u201cNo U-Turn\u201d traffic control devices or regulatory signs. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Right-of-Way Compliance:<\/strong> Motorists are legally required to yield to all approaching vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists before initiating the turn. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"h-when-are-u-turns-not-legal-illegal-in-michigan\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">When are U-turns not legal (illegal) in Michigan?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Michigan Vehicle Code does not contain a blanket prohibition, executing a U-turn becomes strictly not legal (illegal) under the following operational and environmental conditions:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Posted Regulatory Signs:<\/strong> The movement is explicitly prohibited by a \u201cNo U-Turn\u201d sign or an electronic traffic control device.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Obstructed Roadway Visibility:<\/strong> Drivers attempt the rotation near the crest of a hill, sharp curves, or areas with poor weather conditions where oncoming traffic cannot see the vehicle.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Controlled Freeways and Divided Highways:<\/strong> Making this turn is generally prohibited across paved or unpaved medians on high-speed interstate freeways and limited-access roadways.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Unsafe Traffic Conditions:<\/strong> The maneuver is executed carelessly, forcing approaching drivers to brake abruptly, swerve, or otherwise compromise immediate roadway safety.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"h-are-they-legal-in-cities-villages-and-townships\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are they legal in cities, villages and townships?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cities, villages and\/or townships can prohibit them if they have adopted Rule 434 of the Uniform Traffic Code, which provides the \u201cdriver of any vehicle shall not turn the vehicle so as to proceed in the opposite direction on any street in a business district and shall not, on any other street, so turn a vehicle unless the movement can be made in safety and without interfering with other traffic.\u201d (See R 28.1434(1))<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-can-you-get-a-ticket-for-making-one-even-though-they-are-permitted\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can you get a ticket for making one even though they are permitted?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even though U-turns are legal under Michigan law, you could get a ticket for: (1) disobeying a sign prohibiting U turns (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Laws\/MCL?objectName=MCL-257-611\">MCL 257.611<\/a>(1)); (2) speeding (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Laws\/MCL?objectName=MCL-257-627\">MCL 257.627<\/a>(1)); (3) reckless driving (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Laws\/MCL?objectName=MCL-257-626\">MCL 257.626<\/a>); (4) careless or negligent driving (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Laws\/MCL?objectName=MCL-257-626b\">MCL 257.626b<\/a>); (5) impeding traffic (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Laws\/MCL?objectName=MCL-257-676b\">MCL 257.676b<\/a>(1)); and\/or (6) a turn not \u201cmade in safety\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Laws\/MCL?objectName=MCL-257-648\">MCL 257.648<\/a>(1)).<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-is-this-driving-manuever-dangerous\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is this driving manuever dangerous?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This driving maneuver is more dangerous than many other types of driving maneuvers. It is easy \u2013 and common- for a driver to underestimate distance and speed of oncoming vehicles. Also, other drivers on the road are not expecting you do one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an auto accident lawyer, I have seen more than my share of these driving maneuvers gone wrong. My advice is to avoid using this driving maneuver whenever possible.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-what-to-do-if-you-want-to-make-a-legal-u-turn-in-michigan\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to do if you want to make a legal U-turn in Michigan<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you want to make a U-turn in Michigan, you\u2019ll need to make sure it\u2019s both safe and legal before doing so.
