Well for the second morning this week, we’ve woken to some much
\nneeded, and very welcome rain.\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s still
\nraining now, which is good news not just for gardeners but also because it will
\nhelp replenish dwindling water supplies. Without wishing to appear over virtuous,
\nwe have tried to limit our use of water a number of small ways. Still, every
\nlittle helps as “the lady that pissed in the sea”<\/i><\/b> said, but moving swiftly on, we\u2019re
\nbanking on the rain stopping for Bank Holiday Monday<\/b> and beyond.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This is because <\/a>Mrs PBT’s<\/b> and I are off on another jolly. It’s a Round Britain <\/b>cruise similar to the one
\nthat we did a couple of years ago on Cunard\u2019s Queen Anne.<\/b> This time, we’re sailing
\non the smaller Ambience<\/b> cruise ship, operated by Ambassador Cruises,<\/b> and whilst
\nit\u2019s a similar route, the itinerary, is quite different, as the only ports that
\nwill be duplicated are Stornoway<\/b> in the Hebrides<\/b>, and Cobh<\/b> in southern Ireland,<\/b>
\npronounced “Cove\u201d,<\/i><\/b> as we\u2019ve recently discovered.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/a>The cruise will take us to destinations
like Belfast, Kirkwall<\/b>
\nin the Orkney Isles, Tobermory<\/b> in Mull, <\/b>plus St Mary Port<\/b> in the Isles of
\nScilly. <\/b>Landing at the latter two destinations depends rather on weather
\nconditions, as we\u2019ll be leaving the boat by tender. Effectively this means one
\nof the ship’s lifeboats will transfer passengers ashore from the ship, because
\nthere aren’t adequate birthing facilities at these two destinations. <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

I’ve been looking at pubs in these destinations and\u00a0 the Crown Liquor Saloon <\/b>is the obvious must visit stop, in Belfast.<\/b>
\nIt\u2019s facing competition though, as Mrs PBT’s<\/b> has her sights set on the Titanic Belfast\u00a0<\/a><\/b>set in the docks area of the port. This is highly appropriate,
\nas the doomed ocean liner was built at the nearby Harland and Wolff<\/b> shipyards. There\u2019s
\nobviously sufficient time to enjoy both attractions and perhaps experience a
\nbit of the city as well.\u00a0 <\/span>An Irish <\/b>colleague
\nof mine isn\u2019t over enamoured with Belfast,<\/b> but as she\u2019s a Derry girl<\/b>, that\u2019s perhaps
\nunderstandable. <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

That\u2019s Belfast<\/b> sorted, but I\u2019d welcome recommendations for
\nclassic and unspoilt pubs in Kirkwall, Stornoway, Tobermory,<\/b> and the Scilly
\nIsles. (Cobh <\/b>is already sorted, with a visit to Professor Pie Tin\u2019s <\/b>former
\nlocal). As for Mull, <\/b>it\u2019s an island that I\u2019ve visited before, back in my
\nstudent days, when I took part in a Botany field course.<\/b> That was at the end of
\nthe second-year summer term, which saw us camping out in the grounds of a faded,
\nformer stately home. We spent two weeks on the island pretending to be botanists,
\nand as a break from looking at the local flora, we nipped across to Iona,<\/b> a
\nsmall island just off the western tip of Mull<\/b>, with a much greater religious significance, due to its connections
\nwith early Celtic Christianity. <\/b>However, with a two hour journey by road, each
\nway I won’t be doing that again, although I noticed that the cruise line is
\noffering excursions across to Iona<\/b>, from Mull.<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

It\u2019s worth mentioning that whilst Ambassador<\/b> is a budget
\ncruise line, the price of this particular cruise wasn’t as good value as the voyage
\nwe experienced earlier in the year. That, of course, was our cruise to Norway<\/b> \u2013
\nthe one with the strong winds, high seas, and stormy conditions.\u00a0 <\/span>Mrs PBT’s<\/b> is keen on it this trip and I too
\nam looking forward to what will be a welcome break, especially after all the brown
\nstuff that\u2019s been flying around recently at work. As with the Norwegian<\/b> voyage,
\nAmbience <\/b>is sailing from Tilbury<\/b> so, Bank Holiday <\/b>traffic willing, it should be
\na relatively straight forward drive, from Bailey Towers. <\/b><\/p>\n

I doubt that I’ll be posting much, if anything, whilst we’re
\naway in view of the previous IT issues I’ve had with password recognition,
\nWi-Fi <\/b>connectivity etc, but I shall be taking a good old-fashioned notebook
\nwith me, to record the salient parts. It will be good too to enjoy a digital
\ndetox, although as my good, lady wife is an unashamed telly addict I doubt I’ll
\nget much relief from the incessant outpouring of so-called \u201cnews\u201d<\/b> coming from the
\ncabin\u2019s TV. <\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Finally, I shall be taking a couple of books with me,
\nalthough rather than the usual works of fiction, both are biographies of two
\nvery contrasting people.<\/p>\n

Stalin\u2019s Englishman: The
\nLives of Guy Burgess<\/strong> by <\/span><\/span>Andrew Lownie <\/b>is widely praised as the
\nfirst truly comprehensive, deeply researched biography of Guy Burgess<\/b>, one of
\nthe five infamous “Cambridge Spies”<\/i><\/b> who betrayed their country to the Soviet
\nUnion,<\/b> both before and after World War II. Burgess <\/b>leaked high\u2011level
\nintelligence, which influenced major events, from the Nazi\u2013Soviet Pact<\/b>
\nto the Korean War<\/b> and comes across as one of Britain\u2019s<\/b> most chaotic yet
\neffective spies. He was also a right shit, by all accounts, although I shall
\nreserve judgement until I have finished the book.<\/p>\n

Too Close to the Sun: The
\nAudacious Life and Times of Denys Finch Hatton<\/strong> is widely
\nregarded as an\u00a0atmospheric, and well researched biography<\/span> of one of the most
\nenigmatic figures of colonial East Africa.<\/b> Author, Sara Wheeler <\/b>reveals a fully
\nknowable man, who nonetheless remains elusive, despite the myth, and the magnetic charm
\nthat made him legendary. During his time in East Africa, Hatton <\/b>enjoyed a
\npassionate relationship with Danish<\/b> settler, coffee grower and author, Karen Blixen<\/b>, who wrote
\nabout her experiences in the best seller, “Out of Africa“. <\/u><\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n
