{"id":7052551,"date":"2026-08-31T09:55:15","date_gmt":"2026-08-31T09:55:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/alabama\/doug-jones-says-his-first-act-as-governor-will-be-expanding-medicaid\/"},"modified":"2026-08-31T09:55:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-31T09:55:15","slug":"doug-jones-says-his-first-act-as-governor-will-be-expanding-medicaid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=7052551","title":{"rendered":"Doug Jones says his first act as governor will be expanding Medicaid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Speaking with Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear on an <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ZstRmcIwu_4?si=13LSaVVMvbgJ1YsX\">episode of the governor\u2019s podcast<\/a>, former Senator and Democratic gubernatorial nominee Doug Jones said his \u201cfirst act\u201d as governor would be to expand Medicaid eligibility.<\/p>\n<p>Alabama is one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/medicaid\/status-of-state-medicaid-expansion-decisions\/\">just 10 states<\/a> that have not expanded Medicaid under subsidies first established by the Affordable Care Act of 2010. Expansion would extend eligibility to individuals earning up to 138 percent of the federal poverty level.<\/p>\n<p>States are responsible for a portion of Medicaid costs, but the federal government covers 90 percent of health care costs for people insured through expansion.<\/p>\n<p>If Alabama expanded the program, the Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama <a href=\"https:\/\/parcalabama.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Economic-Analysis-of-Alabama-Medicaid-Expansion.pdf\">estimated<\/a> in 2022 that it would cost the state $225 million annually. The organization also estimated that the state could realize net savings because expansion would allow Alabama to reduce spending in other areas that could instead be covered through Medicaid.<\/p>\n<p>Combining the Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama\u2019s findings with Urban Institute estimates on the effects of work requirements, the advocacy organization Families USA recently <a href=\"https:\/\/familiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Alabama-MedEx-Fact-Sheet-3-6-26.pdf\">estimated<\/a> that Medicaid expansion would provide health insurance to more than 150,000 additional Alabamians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to do that,\u201d Jones said. \u201cWe got to get with the legislature to help fund it. But the second one right behind it\u2014it\u2019ll be on the desk at the same time\u2014will be that one-year moratorium on data centers so that the state of Alabama can take the time to do it right to make sure that we\u2019re getting the guard rails in place, to get the transparency in place to get the ethics laws in place, to get everything so communities will be comfortable and they can help make those decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not going to allow Alabama to be the dumping ground for data centers,\u201d Jones continued. \u201cWe want to do it right for these communities and the people that are in there.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Beshear also criticized U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville, R-Alabama, Jones\u2019 opponent in the race for governor, over what Beshear described as Tuberville\u2019s lack of support for stronger federal regulation of artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is an opportunity to have real law and regulation that prevents AI from getting out of hand, from it getting out there and stealing your personal ability, from its ability to use deepfake. But Tommy Tuberville won\u2019t do anything about it,\u201d Beshear said. \u201cWhy? Because Donald Trump doesn\u2019t want to do anything about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Responding to Beshear\u2019s description of Tuberville as \u201cwilling to do whatever a president says,\u201d Jones said he chose to run for governor rather than seek his former Senate seat, as former Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown is doing, because governors are \u201cthe ones standing up to all this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jones also joked about a story published by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/08\/13\/chatbots-are-doing-work-congress-with-little-oversight\/\">The Washington Post<\/a>, which reported that Tuberville frequently talks to ChatGPT during car rides.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe must be talking about a pretty rogue version to come up with some of the things he says in public,\u201d Jones said.<\/p>\n<p><!-- CONTENT END 1 -->\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Speaking with Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear on an episode of the governor\u2019s podcast, former Senator and Democratic gubernatorial nominee Doug Jones said his \u201cfirst act\u201d as governor would be to expand Medicaid eligibility.
