Novak Djokovic has suffered a stunning first-round defeat at the 2026 US Open, bringing his campaign at Flushing Meadows to an early and unexpected end.

The Serbian superstar was beaten by Argentina’s Mariano Navone in a dramatic five-set encounter. Djokovic won the second and third sets to take control of the match, but Navone fought back strongly to win the final two sets and complete one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.

The defeat is a major setback for Djokovic, who arrived at the US Open targeting another historic Grand Slam triumph. A victory in New York would have strengthened his bid for a record-extending 25th Grand Slam singles title. The loss marks his first first-round defeat at a Grand Slam tournament since the 2006 Australian Open, ending an extraordinary run that lasted two decades.

For Navone, meanwhile, the victory represents a career-defining moment. Defeating one of the greatest players in tennis history on the US Open stage will undoubtedly rank among the biggest achievements of his career.

Djokovic will now have to regroup after another difficult Grand Slam campaign, while Navone moves into the second round with enormous confidence and one of the tournament’s biggest victories already under his belt.

Read the
