I\u2019m still ironing out my <a href=\"https:\/\/iamaileen.com\/category\/destinations\/australia-oceania\/\">travel plans<\/a> in order to make this goal happen, though; but that aside,\u00a0when Laura contacted me about how she wanted to talk about the country here on the blog, I immediately said yes! <em><span class=\"has-inline-color has-white-color\">(Australia Facts)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After all, the least that I can do for now is to\u00a0learn more about this amazing destination that is famed for its natural and cityscapes \u2014 and what better way than to hear it from a local, right?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"bio-intro\"\/><span style=\"font-family:'Travelers Handwriting'!important;font-size:40px;\">Bio &amp; Intro<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft is-resized\"\/>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong>My name is Laura Fairbourn<\/strong><\/strong>\u00a0and I am an Australian traveler, volunteer, blogger, and writer who loves to explore the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I love to travel slowly, with a focus on responsible tourism, so that I can immerse myself in the communities I visit. Here are the top 10 things that you should know about Australia before you pack your swimmers and head to the Outback!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"australia-facts-trivia\"\/><span style=\"font-family:'Travelers Handwriting'!important;font-size:40px;\">Australia Facts &amp; Trivia<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1-not-all-australian-animals-are-deadly\"\/><span style=\"color:#f48885;\" class=\"has-inline-color\">1.<\/span> Not all Australian animals are deadly<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>\u2026but that smile can be quite deadly \ud83d\ude1b<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, we might have some of the deadliest animals in the world, but your chances of seeing most of them are very slim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Great White Sharks, for example, have a fearsome reputation, but fatal shark attacks in Australia are rare. While Australia is home to plenty of potentially dangerous wildlife, your chances of encountering most of it are relatively low.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2-%e2%80%a6but-some-animals-are\"\/><span style=\"color:#f48885;\" class=\"has-inline-color\">2.<\/span> \u2026But some animals are<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"\/>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From sharks to snakes, and koalas to kangaroos, Australia has it all. But what visitors might not know is that some of our Aussie icons can really pack a punch!<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although serious encounters are uncommon, some Australian animals can be dangerous. Kangaroos, for example, are powerful wild animals and can cause serious injuries if they feel threatened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They aren\u2019t called boxing kangaroos for nothing!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3-we-speak-english%e2%80%a6-but-in-our-own-way\"\/><span style=\"color:#f48885;\" class=\"has-inline-color\">3.<\/span> We speak English\u2026 but in our own way<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"\/>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Australians have a shorter way to say everything and we love nicknames. Once you land in Australia.\u00a0you will hear sentences like: <em>\u2018Howyagaan mate? I\u2019ll just pop past the bottle-o to get some stubbies for the barbie this arvo then we will be sweet as!\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Translation: <em>\u2018How are you, my friend? I will go to the liquor store and buy some beers before the barbeque this afternoon and then we will be ready!\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4-australia-is-big-really-big\"\/><span style=\"color:#f48885;\" class=\"has-inline-color\">4.<\/span> Australia is BIG, really big!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"\/>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve heard a surprising amount of tourists in Sydney say they are going to drive to Cairns for the weekend. Well, prepare yourself for a long journey, because driving from Sydney to Cairns can take around 27 hours, while a direct flight takes roughly 3 hours. Want to see Perth?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, that is even further \u2014 roughly a 5-hour flight from Sydney or a road trip of around 40 hours of driving time, depending on your route. When you are planning your trip, make sure you factor in travel time!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5-sydney-and-melbourne-are-a-food-lovers-paradise\"\/><span style=\"color:#f48885;\" class=\"has-inline-color\">5.<\/span> Sydney and Melbourne are a food lover\u2019s paradise<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"\/>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thanks to our wonderful immigrant culture, Sydney and Melbourne are known for their incredible food choices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By visiting a different suburb each day, you will be able to eat your way around the globe \u2013 Italian coffee for breakfast, Thai for lunch, Lebanese for dinner, and Indian mango <em>lassi<\/em> for dessert.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6-some-people-live-underground-to-avoid-the-heat\"\/><span style=\"color:#f48885;\" class=\"has-inline-color\">6.<\/span> Some people live underground to avoid the heat<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"\/>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Coober Pedy, many locals have built homes underground to avoid the scorching daytime temperatures. Coober Pedy is one of the world\u2019s most famous opal-mining towns and a major source of precious opal. Many locals live in underground homes known as \u201cdugouts,\u201d which help provide relief from the extreme temperatures above ground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fancy a game of golf? To avoid the heat, locals play at night on a course completely free of grass. The local golf course is famously grassless, with players using a small piece of artificial turf when teeing off. Night golf has also been played using glowing golf balls to escape the daytime heat.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7-aboriginal-history-is-rich-and-long\"\/><span style=\"color:#f48885;\" class=\"has-inline-color\">7.<\/span> Aboriginal history is rich and long<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"\/>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples belong to the world\u2019s oldest continuing cultures, with evidence of human occupation in Australia dating back at least 65,000 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures are incredibly diverse, with hundreds of distinct groups, languages and traditions. Concepts sometimes referred to in English as \u201cthe Dreaming\u201d or \u201cDreamtime\u201d can encompass creation stories, ancestral beings, Country, law and cultural knowledge, though meanings and terminology differ between communities.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"8-you-can-study-on-air\"\/><span style=\"color:#f48885;\" class=\"has-inline-color\">8.<\/span> You can study on air!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"\/>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some kids live in communities that are so remote that it is impossible for them to attend a conventional school.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Australia\u2019s famous School of the Air was historically known for teaching remote students by radio. Today, lessons are largely delivered using the internet and digital technologies, allowing students living hundreds of kilometres from their classmates and teachers to learn together online.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"9-australians-love-the-great-outdoors\"\/><span style=\"color:#f48885;\" class=\"has-inline-color\">9.<\/span> Australians love the great outdoors<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"\/>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether it is hiking, swimming, playing sport or just hanging out at the beach, Australians love to go outside to enjoy ourselves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And with scenery as spectacular as the Kimberley, the Great Barrier Reef, Kangaroo Island and countless beaches along Australia\u2019s vast coastline, it isn\u2019t hard to see why!<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"10-there-is-no-place-like-australia\"\/><span style=\"color:#f48885;\" class=\"has-inline-color\">10.<\/span> There is no place like Australia!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"\/>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No matter how many places I visit, or how long I stay away, there really is no place like home. You will find Australia to be a welcoming and exciting place to visit filled with laidback locals who are always keen for a <em>barbie<\/em>\u00a0(BBQ) and a cider.
