There is a particular sound a caravan awning makes at half past two in the afternoon when it has been raining since breakfast. Somewhere between a drum and a dripping tap. If you\u2019ve ever spent a wet week in the Lakes or watched a Cornish sky close in on day three of five, you know exactly the sound I mean, and you probably also know the sentence that follows it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m bored.\u201d<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve done a fair number of these trips now, and I\u2019ve stopped treating the wet days as a failure of planning. They\u2019re just part of the deal when you holiday in the UK, or when you insist on driving somewhere rather than flying. What\u2019s changed is that I no longer try to fill every hour, and I\u2019ve got a small bag of things that reliably rescue the ones worth rescuing.<\/p>\n

The drive is its own event, so treat it like one<\/h4>\n

I used to think of the journey as dead time to be endured. Four hours of motorway, everyone in a mood by Reading. The shift that helped most was giving each child an actual job. The younger one gets the paper map. Yes, a paper one, an Ordnance Survey or just the old road atlas from under the passenger seat, and their role is to call out what\u2019s coming and how far. The role is taken extremely seriously. The older one is in charge of music and the stop schedule, which they have decided is a position of enormous power, and honestly, let it be.<\/p>\n

Beyond that, the things that have earned their place: An audiobook the whole car can stand. This is harder than it sounds with a six-year gap between, but when you find one it buys you ninety uninterrupted minutes. A tatty pack of cards for the service station stop, because everyone needs to be out of the vehicle and doing something with their hands. And the plain old counting games, which the eleven-year-old still loves and the sixteen-year-old pretends to be above whilst quietly keeping score.<\/p>\n

We also stop more than we used to. It adds forty minutes to the journey and removes about two hours of misery, which is a trade I\u2019ll take every time.<\/p>\n

Rainy days: do less, not more<\/h4>\n

My instinct on a washout morning used to be to find an attraction, get in the car, drive somewhere. Sometimes that\u2019s right. A National Trust house with a decent tea room can save a day.<\/p>\n

But quite often the better call is to stay put and let everyone be a bit slow. Card games. A proper board game if you\u2019ve packed one. Colouring or drawing for the younger ones. That thing where a child builds an elaborate fort out of camping chairs and a groundsheet and stays inside it for two hours. I\u2019ve also come round to letting them be bored for a stretch before I intervene. Not as some parenting philosophy, I just noticed that if I hold my nerve for twenty minutes, something usually gets invented. The intervening was often my problem, not theirs.<\/p>\n

And put the wellies on and go out in it. Not for the whole day, but a proper stomp in the rain for half an hour resets everybody. Puddles, a stream, a wet beach with nobody else on it. Then hot chocolate and dry socks. It\u2019s not sophisticated but it works on all ages, including the parents.<\/p>\n

Screen time you don\u2019t have to feel funny about<\/h4>\n

I\u2019m not going to pretend our tablets stay in the bag all week. On a long ferry crossing or a fifth consecutive wet afternoon, they come out, and I\u2019ve made my peace with it. What I have got fussier about is what\u2019s on them. There\u2019s a real difference between a child slumped in front of an endless video feed for three hours and a child doing something that requires them to think, even if both look identical from across the caravan.<\/p>\n

Extended screen time during travel, whether it is a tablet on a ferry crossing or a film on a rainy afternoon in the caravan, adds meaningfully to the daily visual load that eyes are already managing, and for contact lens wearers that cumulative strain shows up as dryness, irritation, and end of day discomfort faster than it would on a typical home routine.\u00a0<\/strong>Dailies lenses<\/a> <\/strong>are particularly well suited to travel for this reason, since a fresh lens each morning gives eyes the best possible starting point before the screen time, changing light conditions, and recycled air of a travel day begin to take their toll.<\/p>\n

The one that surprised me is coding. A friend\u2019s kids got into it during a rained-off week in Wales and it\u2019s been the thing they go back to on every trip since. She uses Codemonkey<\/a> with them, which sets the whole thing up as puzzles and little games to build rather than lessons, starting with drag-and-drop blocks for the younger one and real typed code for the older. It works offline-ish enough for a caravan with patchy signal, and crucially they\u2019ll do it for an hour without anyone nagging, which is more than I can say for the reading they\u2019re meant to be doing. Audiobooks and podcasts count here too. So does a photo challenge, where you give them a list of ten things to find and photograph on the site. Same device, entirely different afternoon.<\/p>\n

The teenager problem<\/h4>\n

Nobody warns you that the family holiday gets structurally harder when you hit the teenage years. The activities that thrill an eleven-year-old are actively humiliating to a sixteen-year-old, and the sulking is genuinely impressive.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s worked for us is giving the eldest a day planned around them. The teen plans one day of the trip, entirely. Where we go, where we eat, what time we leave. They\u2019re also allowed to opt out of one thing without a discussion about it. That single concession has cut the friction by about half, and the days they plan are usually better than the days I plan, which I\u2019m choosing not to think about too hard.<\/p>\n

What actually matters<\/h4>\n

Every trip we\u2019ve taken, the bit the children talk about afterwards is never the attraction we paid forty pounds to get into. It\u2019s the wrong turn we took, or the dog on the campsite, or the night the wind got up and we all ended up in one tent. So pack the cards, download something decent, and let the wet days be wet.
