Since then, he\u2019s been running neck and neck with Democratic state Rep. James Talarico, who led Paxton by six points in a poll from a Democratic-linked polling firm published on Thursday. And he says he needs Trump\u2019s cash to put him over the finish line.<\/p>\n<p>Paxton said in an interview Sunday that his campaign\u2019s own internals showed the race to be a different picture, but conceded that it was a close fight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t trust all these polls. We have our own polling that suggests maybe a little different result, but we definitely have a close race,\u201d he told <em>The Sunday Briefing<\/em> on Fox News.<\/p>\n<p>He added that he needed a cash infusion from Donald Trump\u2019s MAGA Inc. He declined to say whether he has spoken with the president about fundraising during Trump\u2019s campaign stop to Texas last week, though he said he expected money to come in from Senate Republicans to help keep the seat from becoming \u201cCalifornia\u2019s third senator.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But that cavalry might not be coming.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Republicans aren\u2019t coming out in waves to support Paxton, who ousted one of their own closely tied to leadership and whose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/trump-john-cornyn-texas-talarico-b3025394.html\" title=\"Trump ignored warnings and betrayed a Texas Republican. And he basically is not offering a very compelling case for his election. <\/p>\n<p>Cornyn said Paxton is \u201cmaking this harder than it needs to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Republican Sen. John Kennedy stressed that the Senate GOP\u2019s campaign arm \u2014 the National Republican Senatorial Committee \u2014 didn\u2019t have any money budgeted to protect the Texas Senate seat as Republicans find themselves fighting off a number of credible Democratic challenges.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-awdjp1-2 cbpRGD sc-awdjp1-3 image align-center\">\n<figure class=\"sc-1cbdeug-0 cXcwgU\">\n<div data-gallery-length=\"4\" class=\"sc-awdjp1-0 cxGMPi\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2026\/07\/26\/20\/2279072160..\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2026\/07\/26\/20\/2279072160..?quality=75&amp;width=320&amp;auto=webp 320w, https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2026\/07\/26\/20\/2279072160..?quality=75&amp;width=640&amp;auto=webp 640w\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Sen. We need help from the president,\u201d Kennedy told <em>The Sunday Briefing<\/em> on Fox News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president says he has $850 million in his campaign accounts. That\u2019s a lot of jack. I\u2019m hoping that the president\u2019s gonna spend $100 or $200 million in Texas. But he hasn\u2019t committed to it yet,\u201d Kennedy said. \u201cBut in the meantime, we\u2019ve got a race, and I\u2019m not going to play-act and say that we don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fox\u2019s interviews with Paxton and Kennedy came as the network highlighted the massive advantage Talarico currently has over Paxton in available cash, which Paxton credited to the expensive runoff against Cornyn.<\/p>\n<p>Talarico won significant national support and saw a fundraising surge after former CBS host Stephen Colbert said that his network banned an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/stephen-colbert-texas-democratic-senate-primary-b2923128.html\" title=\"Did Stephen Colbert just decide the Texas Senate primary?\">interview with Talarico <\/a>from the airwaves in February. His own primary did not go to a runoff, sparing the Democrats a second costly battle.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-awdjp1-2 cbpRGD sc-awdjp1-3 image align-center\">\n<figure class=\"sc-1cbdeug-0 cXcwgU\">\n<div data-gallery-length=\"4\" class=\"sc-awdjp1-0 heqNFF\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2026\/08\/30\/20\/2289541097..\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2026\/08\/30\/20\/2289541097..?quality=75&amp;width=320&amp;auto=webp 320w, https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2026\/08\/30\/20\/2289541097..?quality=75&amp;width=640&amp;auto=webp 640w\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"John Cornyn has refused to fundraise or campaign for his onetime opponent\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/div><figcaption class=\"sc-1cbdeug-1 sc-1cbdeug-3 YlsWU hgzWpY\">John Cornyn has refused to fundraise or campaign for his onetime opponent<span class=\"sc-1cbdeug-7 gjqsiM\"> <!-- -->(<!-- -->Getty<!-- -->)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Republicans are optimistic that Trump\u2019s support and Texas\u2019s strong Republican voting base will push Paxton over the finish line, but the president\u2019s sinking approval ratings and Talarico\u2019s popularity compared to Paxton\u2019s are making that a tough argument to make.<\/p>\n<p>A former top aide to Cornyn made headlines earlier this month when it was reported that he accepted a senior position on Talarico\u2019s campaign, a sign of the work the Talarico campaign has done to win over Republicans averse to supporting Paxton.<\/p>\n<p>The Texas attorney general was investigated by the FBI and accused of misusing his office, and faced an impeachment trial led by Republicans in the state legislature. In 2024, he accepted a deal to avoid charges on securities fraud by paying restitution of $300,000. The Department of Justice declined to bring charges against him in a decision made just weeks before Trump was set to take office.<\/p>\n<p>Texas is just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/trump-republicans-senate-2026-midterms-b2903515.html\">one of several red-purple states<\/a> where Republicans are defending Senate seats this year and Democrats believe they have a chance to reverse the GOP\u2019s gains made in the last election cycle, potentially even securing a majority.
