We had plenty of water stored, along with a Boroux water filter, plenty of food stocked, our generator was running like a champ, and our two kids knew exactly what to do without me saying a word.

Three years earlier, during the Texas Freeze, none of that was true. We scrambled. We argued about who was supposed to keep the fire stoked in the fireplace, and it took us three days before we remembered we had a portable generator stored in the back of the garage. True story. So, we found out, the hard way, exactly what happens when you’re not prepared nearly as well as you thought.

Well, here’s what I learned between those two storms. There’s a real gap between “prepared” and “we’ll figure it out”, and that gap almost never comes down to gear. It comes down to a handful of questions most families never think to ask each other.

Asking these questions and talking about how your family will answer them and then create a plan is one of the most important things you could do this week.

Does everyone in your house know the plan, or just you?

If you’re the only one who knows how to start the generator, how to prepare a freeze-dried meal, or where the family meeting point is, you’re not the backup plan. You’re the only plan, and that makes you a point of failure. When just one person knows the how, when, where, why, and who in an emergency, everything can quickly collapse if that person is overwhelmed or not around.

A few plans every family should have:

The family meeting point for something sudden like a fire

Where in the house to gather for a hurricane, tornado, or something similar, e.g. a safe room

How to pack up for an emergency evacuation

Where the Grab-and-Go Binder is

Who will help a family member with health or other special needs issues

If everyone does know the plan, good. That’s the goal, but take time to identify just one plan, perhaps the one you feel is most critical and urgent, and make sure everyone knows exactly what to do.

Could your family go seven days without a grocery store?

“Yes, easily” means you’ve already got a solid, well-prepared pantry. You have a supply of staples like they had back in the days of the Great Depression as well as a supply of just-add-water emergency meals.

If your answer is, “We’d figure it out”, well, that’s what you say right before you realize you might not be able to figure it out after all! A full seven days of extra food gives you real breathing room beyond the standard 72-hour minimum, and it’s worth taking a few minutes to check your shelves to see just how many meals you have on hand in case you can’t get to the stores or the shelves are empty.

Who in your family depends on something that needs electricity to survive?

This is a biggie and overlooked by most people. Take stock now to consider how this impacts your family and emergency plans.

Medication that needs refrigeration. Medical equipment. Insulin storage. Enough of important prescription meds to get through a few weeks if you can’t get to the pharmacy. Get specific about who that applies to in your family.

Want More Useful Info From Survival Mom?

If cell service went down, how would your family find each other?

You already know what it feels like to repeatedly call a loved one and there’s no answer. Now imagine that happening in the middle of a major crisis and how much additional stress it would cause.

A real, agreed-upon meeting point is an easy fix to the dilemma of “Where is everybody?” in a sudden and scary emergency,

“We’d just call each other” isn’t a plan. It’s just a hope that depends entirely on infrastructure you don’t control. If the internet goes down, how can you communicate and get accurate information? And if cellphone towers are out of service, you need a layered plan for family communications.

Again, whatever plan you choose, make sure everyone is on board and knows what to do.

Who’s the one person who rolls their eyes at all this?

Every family has one. It might be a teenager, a spouse, a parent who thinks you’re overdoing it. They’re not the weak link, but being left out of the plan is. Give that person one small, specific job, and buy-in tends to follow.

Keep in mind that often the cause for skepticism or resistance is based in fear, so stress how your emergency planning will help ensure the family is safe, the pets are looked after, and how great it will feel to know exactly what to do in an emergency.

Is your emergency kit somewhere you can find in the dark?

If Murphy’s Law has anything to say about it, you’ll need that kit in the middle of the night, or when an earthquake is rocking your house or the roof is halfway blown off by a hurricane!

Many people buy the kit, shove it under a bed or in a closet and then forget about it. But a well-stocked kit is your all-in-one problem solver. It contains battery-powered lights when the grid is down, a portable water filter if you have a sudden boil notice and no time to actually boil water, perhaps a few high-calorie emergency bars, and even a supply of cash or a pre-paid Visa card for emergencies.

It’s too important to lose track of, even when the rest of your house is hectic. So, where is your kit right now?

Store it somewhere that makes sense, like near the backdoor in case you have to suddenly leave your house, and then make sure everyone knows where it’s located.

What would your plan look like on your worst day, not your best one?

Most plans are written assuming you’re home, awake, and calm, but you should assume the opposite. Like, you’re at work, the kids are at school, and a sudden crisis hits. Or, it’s 2 a.m. and the power’s out on a hot summer night or maybe the entire family is down with the flu.

Whatever your plan, take a critical look at it and think, “Could we actually do this on our worst day ever?”

Your weakest link isn’t a failure

It’s just the next thing to figure out and fix. Nobody builds a fully airtight plan on the first try, including me, including after twenty years of doing this. The families who handle a crisis well aren’t the ones with the most gear or buckets of freeze-dried food stacked to the ceilings. They’re the ones who took a little time to create a plan, practice it, look for gaps, and then fix them.

Pick one question from this list, and talk about it with your family this week.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should we revisit these questions?

Twice a year is realistic for most families. Spring and fall work well, or tie it to something you already do, like changing smoke detector batteries.

What if my kids are too young to be part of this conversation?

Give them an age-appropriate piece of it. Even a five-year-old can learn a meeting spot or how to call for help. The goal isn’t a briefing, it’s familiarity.

We don’t agree on how serious to take this. Now what?

Start smaller than you want to. One question, one small change, is easier to agree on than an overhaul, and it builds momentum toward the rest.

The Quick Start Guide for Beginning Preppers

Get Home, No Matter What: A Woman’s Guide to Getting Home in Any Emergency

How to Survive a Power Outage That Lasts Days or Weeks

Find Your Family’s Weakest Link on Paper

Talking through these questions is a start, but when you actually write down the answers, that’s when you have a real plan.

I put together a free printable, the Family Weakest Link Self-Assessment, that walks you through all seven questions plus a few more, with space to write down who’s responsible for what and what needs fixing first.

Enter your email and it lands in your inbox in about a minute, along with the rest of what I send preparedness-minded families each week.

The Final Word

The worst time to find a weak link is in a moment of crisis, and yet, many of those weaknesses can be identified before a stress test comes along.
