Five years ago, another team discovered that the cave contained Paleolithic art\u2014some of it apparently more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/how-old-cave-paintings-spain-cova-dones-180983456\/\">24,000 years old<\/a>. Last year, they announced that one of the cave\u2019s chambers contained at least 15 Roman inscriptions and a first-century coin from the reign of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Claudius-Roman-emperor\">Emperor Claudius<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-image \">\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/BkgCadVFdoqkkDtM8rTjymffz28=\/fit-in\/1072x0\/filters:focal(229x350:230x351)\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/filer_public\/62\/06\/62068bb3-0040-4165-9106-3829c5dc7ac4\/two_bronze_rings_located_on_the_surface_of_the_sanctuary_area_under_the_rock_inscriptions.jpeg\" alt=\"rings\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption class=\"caption\">\n<p>      Two bronze rings found in the sanctuary chamber<\/p>\n<p>      <span class=\"credit\">University of Alicante<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Now, following further investigation, researchers have identified the chamber as a Roman sanctuary where women appear to have taken an active role in the worship of a female deity some 2,000 years ago. The team has now documented at least 110 Latin inscriptions on the chamber&#8217;s walls and ceilings\u2014the largest known concentration of Latin inscriptions in a Roman cave sanctuary, according to the researchers.<\/p>\n<p>Five of the inscriptions are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/in-this-ancient-necropolis-romans-left-fine-glass-ossuaries-platforms-for-feasting-and-phallic-pendants-180984232\/\">votives<\/a>, tributes dedicated to a goddess reverentially called <em>Domina<\/em>, or \u201cthe Lady,\u201d says researcher Silvia Alfay\u00e9 Villa, a historian at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unizar.es\/\">University of Zaragoza<\/a>, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/web.ua.es\/es\/actualidad-universitaria\/2026\/julio2026\/27-31\/descubren-en-la-cova-dones-de-valencia-unas-120-inscripciones-latinas-de-epoca-romana.html\">translated statement<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ua.es\/en\/university-of-alicante.html\">University of Alicante<\/a>. Three of them also contain the term <em>MALACI<\/em>, which Alfay\u00e9 Villa describes as a previously unknown designation for a goddess. Its precise meaning\u2014and its possible connection to the cave\u2019s abundant water\u2014remains under investigation.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-image \">\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/ajYF6AsoT-aVEbQBbLUWGeOuQKM=\/fit-in\/1072x0\/filters:focal(234x299:235x300)\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/filer_public\/42\/28\/422871d8-20fe-4535-8013-7c2127cc34ba\/domina_votum.jpeg\" alt=\"domina\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption class=\"caption\">\n<p>      One of the inscriptions discovered in the chamber, which researchers think may have been used for cult worship<\/p>\n<p>      <span class=\"credit\">University of Alicante<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The experts identified several female names among the inscriptions, says researcher <a href=\"https:\/\/reunionescientificas.marqalicante.com\/speaker\/virginia-barciela-gonzalez\/?lang=en\">Virginia Barciela<\/a>, an archaeologist at the University of Alicante, in the statement. They also discovered jewelry, chalice-shaped vessels, ceramic fragments, animal bones and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/moHCum7OSlw\">spindle whorls<\/a> on the surface of the chamber, which is located more than 650 feet from the cave entrance.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers\u2019 new findings have provided clues about who used the cave and how they may have worshipped there. Barciela says the spindle whorls, possibly offerings of textile-working tools, fit the inscriptional evidence for women\u2019s active participation in the sanctuary.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that five of the inscriptions refer to the same deity, and that they are concentrated in a defined area far from the cave&#8217;s entrance, suggests that the chamber was a space for an organized cult, says researcher Sergio Garc\u00eda-Dils, an archaeologist at the National University of Distance Education in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Sevilla-province-Spain\">Seville<\/a>, in the statement.<\/p>\n<div class=\"insight\">\n<div>\n<p class=\"h4-style\">Did you know? Women in Roman religion<\/p>\n<p>Women took part in Roman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/books\/abs\/women-and-society-in-the-roman-world\/religion\/E445EEB2F6C39819B5322838C0B3D7EE\">religious life<\/a> as worshippers, dedicants and, in some cults, priestesses.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Cova de les Dones lies near Millares, a small inland town in Valencia\u2019s mountainous interior, about 40 miles southwest of the city of Valencia.<\/p>\n<p>Although its Iron Age artifacts had drawn researchers\u2019 attention by the 20th century, the cave\u2019s wall art wasn\u2019t discovered until 2021.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/antiquity\/article\/cova-dones-a-major-palaeolithic-cave-art-site-in-eastern-iberia\/209249A848B919CE653531CB85856DEC#article\">2023<\/a>, a team led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/archaeology\/about\/staff\/arr1r19.page\">Aitor Ruiz-Redondo<\/a>, an archaeologist at the University of Zaragoza, recorded more than 110 graphic units, including paintings and drawings. Many depict animals, like red deer, wild horses and oxen. The paintings were created with red clay applied to the cave walls, where later mineral deposits helped preserve some of the ancient images.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers identified the artwork as Paleolithic through stylistic analysis and other archaeological clues, although some of the marks are more difficult to date with certainty. One of them \u201cwas covered by a bear scratch,\u201d Ruiz-Redondo told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/how-old-cave-paintings-spain-cova-dones-180983456\/\"><em>Smithsonian<\/em><\/a> magazine in 2024. Martorell \/ University of Alicante<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The cave&#8217;s name, Cova de les Dones, or \u2018Cave of the Women\u2019, is documented in an 18th-century account by the naturalist <a href=\"https:\/\/plants.jstor.org\/stable\/10.5555\/al.ap.person.bm000001334\">Antonio Jos\u00e9 Cavanilles<\/a>.
