Under this law, any Hindu<br \/>\nwho is of sound mind, has attained the age of 18 years, and is not married, can<br \/>\nadopt a child. However, if a male Hindu wants to adopt a son, he must be at<br \/>\nleast 21 years old, and the age difference between him and the adopted child<br \/>\nmust be at least 21 years. Also, a female Hindu can only adopt a child if she<br \/>\ndoes not have a living husband or the husband has renounced the world or has<br \/>\nbeen declared by a court of competent jurisdiction to be of unsound mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 10.0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-align: justify; text-autospace: none;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN;\">The adopted child is considered to be the child of the<br \/>\nadoptive parents, and all ties with the biological family are severed. The<br \/>\nadopted child is entitled to all the rights and privileges of a biological<br \/>\nchild, and the adoptive parents are responsible for the child&#8217;s maintenance,<br \/>\neducation, and upbringing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 10.0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-align: justify; text-autospace: none;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN;\">Under HAMA, adoption can be either &#8220;sponsored&#8221;<br \/>\nor &#8220;unrelated&#8221;. A sponsored adoption is when a child is adopted by a<br \/>\nperson who is not a close relative, but the adoption is made with the consent<br \/>\nof the child&#8217;s biological parents or guardian. An unrelated adoption is when a<br \/>\nchild is adopted from an institution or directly from the biological parents or<br \/>\nguardian, without any prior relationship or sponsorship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 10.0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-align: justify; text-autospace: none;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN;\">HAMA also provides for the adoption of a child of the<br \/>\nsame gender as the adoptive parent. In addition to CARA, which is responsible for the adoption of<br \/>\nIndian children, the government has established other institutions and programs<br \/>\nto provide care and protection to children, such as the Integrated Child<br \/>\nProtection Scheme (ICPS) and the National Commission for Protection of Child<br \/>\nRights (NCPCR).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 10.0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-align: justify; text-autospace: none;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN;\">The Indian government has also made efforts to encourage<br \/>\nadoption of children with special needs, older children, and children from<br \/>\nmarginalized communities.
