{"id":7051063,"date":"2026-08-29T17:25:27","date_gmt":"2026-08-29T17:25:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/uncategorized\/the-wistful-little-tune-that-hasnt-left-my-head-since-dolly-passed\/"},"modified":"2026-08-29T17:25:27","modified_gmt":"2026-08-29T17:25:27","slug":"the-wistful-little-tune-that-hasnt-left-my-head-since-dolly-passed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=7051063","title":{"rendered":"The Wistful Little Tune that Hasn\u2019t Left My Head Since Dolly Passed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p><strong>The Wistful Little Tune that Hasn\u2019t Left My Head Since Dolly Passed\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(August 28, 2026) \u2013 How do you write a tribute to Dolly Parton that says something that hasn\u2019t already been said?<\/p>\n<p>In the three days since her death, there have already been countless remembrances covering enormous territory: country music icon, crossover star, prolific songwriter, actress, businesswoman, philanthropist, cultural unifier, and simply one of the most universally beloved celebrities this country has ever produced.\u00a0\u00a0She is an American institution.<\/p>\n<p>But with each touching tribute, I kept coming back to something much smaller and more personal: the moment her music first entered my life.<\/p>\n<p>So rather than attempt to explain what Dolly meant to the world, I\u2019ll commemorate the song that first made her mean something to me \u2014 the sweet little tune with the bittersweet melody and melancholy lyric that introduced me to that voice nearly fifty years ago and which hasn\u2019t left my head since we received the heartbreaking news that she was gone.<\/p>\n<p>For me it wasn\u2019t \u201cJolene\u201d or \u201cI Will Always Love You\u201d or her years with Porter Waggoner.\u00a0\u00a0It wasn\u2019t\u00a0<em>Coat of Many Colors<\/em>\u00a0or the songs from\u00a0<em>The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas<\/em>\u00a0or even \u201c9 to 5,\u201d which hadn\u2019t happened yet.<\/p>\n<p>It was a song that entered my world in the fall and winter of 1977\/78 through its debut on American Top 40 with Casey Kasem: \u201cHere You Come Again.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Making an inauspicious entry at No. 37 in mid-November, Dolly\u2019s tune about someone who can just waltz right into a room and instantly undo you, did just that with me.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dolly Parton - Here You Come Again (Official Video)\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/x87Zx3XAIsI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>From its opening piano riffs and that light touch of the hi-hat guiding it along, the song had all the proper pop sensibilities, making it the perfect pop crossover hit.\u00a0\u00a0This wasn\u2019t unusual at the time as there was no shortage of songs in the top 40 that week, which had also been hits on Billboard\u2019s Hot Country Songs list, including tunes by Debby Boone, Crystal Gayle, Rita Coolidge, and two singles by Linda Ronstadt.<\/p>\n<p>But none of them sounded like Dolly.\u00a0\u00a0When that quavering but still strong voice sang the opening line, \u201cHere you come again, just when I\u2019ve begun to get myself together,\u201d I knew I\u2019d never heard anything else like it before.\u00a0\u00a0The 11-year-old me didn\u2019t appreciate at the time that I\u2019d never hear anyone else like her again.<\/p>\n<p>As \u201cHere You Come Again\u201d quickly ascended the chart, Casey would eventually announce it as a No. 1 country tune \u2014 one of many Dolly had already acquired but I hadn\u2019t yet heard.\u00a0\u00a0But as Casey had also made clear this was her first pop top 40 hit, it became apparent to this listener that my discovery of Dolly actually paralleled pop America\u2019s broader discovery of Ms. Parton as a crossover star.<\/p>\n<p>That was important because it was around this time that I was also learning about how the industry had created these divisions in music genres.\u00a0\u00a0Casey\u2019s countdown show, which I\u2019d only discovered months earlier, reinforced this understanding by identifying which songs were also soul, country, or disco chart hits.\u00a0\u00a0How ironic was it then that this former No. 1 country song by Dolly, which would eventually reach No. 3 on the pop chart, represented the bridging of those divisions much like its singer did in life for the next nearly 50 years?<\/p>\n<p>Before 1977, country music hadn\u2019t been a major component of my musical world, just as the pop mainstream hadn\u2019t been part of Dolly\u2019s.
