Most people know Forrest Gump as the beloved 1994 movie starring Tom Hanks. But before Forrest ran across America and became a Hollywood icon, he appeared in Winston Groom’s much stranger and more unpredictable novel.

Published in 1986, Forrest Gump follows many of the same characters and events that movie fans will recognize. Forrest plays college football, serves in Vietnam, becomes a table tennis champion and starts a successful shrimp business. However, the book also sends him into space, professional wrestling, competitive chess and several other adventures that never made it into the film.

The movie may be the more emotional version of the story, but the novel offers a wilder, funnier and less polished Forrest. If you have ever wondered how the Forrest Gump book differs from the movie, you may be shocked by just how much Hollywood left out.

Forrest Gump narrates the story of his life, beginning with his childhood in Mobile, Alabama. Winston Groom writes the novel in Forrest’s distinctive voice, using unconventional spelling and grammar to reflect how the character speaks and communicates.

Although Forrest has an intellectual disability and struggles in school, he possesses remarkable physical strength and an unexpected talent for subjects such as mathematics. He also forms a close relationship with Jenny Curran, who remains one of the most important people in his life.

By the time Forrest is 16, he is 6 feet 6 inches tall and an outstanding football player. His size and speed attract the attention of the University of Alabama, where football provides him with an opportunity to attend college.

College life is not easy for Forrest. He struggles academically and initially has difficulty understanding what his coaches expect from him. Once they learn how to use his abilities, however, he becomes a valuable member of the team. Forrest also discovers that he is talented at playing the harmonica and performing complicated mathematical calculations.

His college career does not last, and Forrest is eventually drafted into the Army. He serves in Vietnam alongside Bubba, meets Lieutenant Dan and later becomes an international table tennis player. These elements will sound familiar to anyone who has watched the movie, but they represent only a small portion of Forrest’s journey in the book.

As Forrest repeatedly stumbles into extraordinary situations, he tries to understand the people around him and determine what will bring him happiness. His life becomes a comic tour through several decades of American history, with each new adventure becoming more unbelievable than the last.

The movie follows the basic outline of Forrest’s life, but screenwriter Eric Roth made enormous changes while adapting the novel. Hollywood removed several of the book’s strangest episodes, including some that would have completely altered the tone of the film.

One of the biggest surprises in the novel is Forrest’s recruitment by NASA. His ability to perform complex mathematical calculations makes him valuable to the space program, and he is sent on a mission with an astronaut and an orangutan named Sue.

The mission goes badly, and the spacecraft crashes in New Guinea. Forrest and his companions then find themselves captured by a tribe of cannibals. It is an absurd storyline that demonstrates just how much more exaggerated the book is than the movie.

Forrest’s size and strength eventually lead him into professional wrestling. He performs under the name “The Dunce,” turning his public image into part of his wrestling character.

This section is much closer to broad comedy than the emotional drama audiences associate with Tom Hanks’ version of Forrest. Including it would have made the movie feel like a very different story.

Forrest is also a gifted chess player. While he has trouble expressing himself and navigating ordinary social situations, he can understand patterns, numbers and complicated strategies that many other people cannot.

The movie keeps Forrest’s physical gifts but significantly reduces the emphasis on his mathematical and intellectual talents. Reading the novel reveals a more complicated character than the film initially suggests.

After becoming successful, Forrest is encouraged to run for the United States Senate. His campaign does not last long because the press begins investigating his colorful past.

The political storyline fits the novel’s satirical view of American culture, but it would have added yet another detour to an already eventful movie.

At another point, Forrest briefly becomes involved with the film industry and works alongside actress Raquel Welch. Like the NASA and wrestling episodes, the Hollywood storyline embraces the novel’s deliberately ridiculous sense of humor.

These adventures make the book feel less like a realistic life story and more like a picaresque satire in which one unlikely event leads directly to another.

There is no single publicly documented explanation for every deleted storyline, but the adaptation’s creative direction makes the likely reasons clear.

The novel is rougher, more episodic and much more absurd than the movie. It also contains stronger language, sexual material and dated depictions that would have changed the film’s rating and broad appeal. The adaptation softened Forrest’s personality and concentrated on his relationships with Jenny, his mother, Bubba and Lieutenant Dan.

Removing the space mission, wrestling career and other exaggerated episodes gave the movie a clearer emotional journey. It also allowed the filmmakers to explore love, loss, destiny and American history without turning the story into a series of disconnected comic adventures.

That decision was difficult to argue with. The adaptation earned 13 Academy Award nominations and won six, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Tom Hanks and Best Adapted Screenplay for Eric Roth, according to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The two versions of Forrest share certain qualities, but they do not feel like exactly the same person.

Tom Hanks plays Forrest as gentle, sincere and almost impossibly innocent. His kindness gives the movie much of its emotional power. The novel’s Forrest is larger, rougher and more openly flawed. His narration can be profane, and the humor surrounding him is often more provocative.

Book Forrest is also portrayed as a savant with exceptional abilities in mathematics, chess, music and athletics. The movie simplifies some of those qualities to create a warmer and more consistent characterization.

Winston Groom once observed that the movie had taken some of Forrest’s “rough edges” away. That change helped make the character more accessible, but it also means readers encounter a version of Forrest who may surprise them.

The movie is the more moving and cohesive version of the story. It develops Forrest’s relationships more effectively, gives Jenny a stronger emotional arc and turns Forrest’s unusual life into a reflection on love, grief and chance.

The novel succeeds in a different way. It is faster, stranger and more satirical. Groom is less interested in sentimentality and more interested in using Forrest’s perspective to expose the absurdity of the world around him.

Readers should also know that some of the novel’s language, humor and portrayals have not aged well. The book was published in 1986, and certain passages may feel offensive or uncomfortable to modern audiences. That does not erase its strengths, but it is worth knowing before beginning the novel.

Ultimately, the book and movie complement each other. The film offers the unforgettable emotional experience, while the novel provides a much fuller—and considerably crazier—look at Forrest’s adventures.

As someone who loved the movie, I found the novel fascinating because it allowed me to see Forrest in a completely different way. I expected a familiar story with a few missing scenes. Instead, I discovered an unpredictable comic adventure that often feels nothing like the film.

There are very few dull moments. Forrest moves from football and war to space travel, wrestling, chess, business and politics with remarkable speed. Groom’s humor and social commentary keep the story entertaining even when its events become completely unbelievable.

The greatest reason to read the book is the opportunity to understand Forrest through his own narration. The movie lets us observe him, but the novel places readers directly inside his mind. His thoughts reveal a person who understands more than others assume, even when he cannot express himself conventionally.

Penguin Random House describes the novel as the modern classic that inspired the Tom Hanks movie, but readers should approach it as its own creation rather than expecting a scene-for-scene version of the film.

Forrest Gump by Winston Groom is worth reading for fans who want to discover the bizarre story hidden behind the Hollywood classic. The novel is not as heartfelt or polished as the movie, and parts of it feel dated, but it is imaginative, funny and consistently surprising.

The movie made Forrest an enduring cultural icon, but the book reveals just how much of his story never reached the screen. Reading it feels like meeting a familiar character from an entirely different universe and that alone makes the novel worth experiencing.

Buy Forrest Gump on Amazon

Yes.
