Earlier this week, a customer brought in a
\ndead Seiko Prospex chronograph. He bought it from another retailer 18
\nmonths ago\u2014not from us. The problem was obvious: a broken stem and
\nwinding crown.<\/p>\n

I suggested he return the watch to the original retailer, but he preferred that we do the repair. Fine by us.<\/p>\n

We placed an order for the replacement parts on the 10th. On the 11th, Seiko shipped them. Today, they arrived in the mail.<\/p>\n

Absolutely crazy\u2014in the best possible way. And the cost? Less than $40
\nincluding postage. Two stems, a steel waterproof crown, and an extra
\ncrown seal.
\n(Andrew wasn\u2019t sure whether the crown came with a seal, so he ordered
\none just in case. It turns out the crown already had one
\ninstalled\u2014still, amazing that Seiko supplies a spare part for a spare
\npart!)\n <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

We haven\u2019t completed the repair yet, but
\nit\u2019s already clear: returning this Prospex to full working order will be
\n straightforward. Almost trivial.<\/p>\n

The final outcome is predictable: one happy customer, a few dollars in
\nprofit, and an unbelievably quick turnaround. Another Seiko saved and
\nready for years of service.<\/p>\n

You might be blown away by Seiko\u2019s promptness, their willingness to
\nsupply parts, and their commitment to keeping the dream alive.<\/p>\n

But you shouldn\u2019t be.<\/p>\n

Seiko is simply doing the most basic, most economically logical, and
\nmost customer-oriented thing a reputable watch manufacturer should do.<\/p>\n

This is how the industry worked since the first branded watch rolled off
\n the bench 120 years ago. Independent watch repairers were always the
\nlink between manufacturer and owner\u2014supporting both sides, offering
\nskill, saving time, saving money.<\/p>\n

So why in the world can we no longer obtain parts for Rolex, Omega, JLC, Breitling\u2014practically any modern Swiss brand?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ask the Swiss brands, and they\u2019ll tell you that we\u2014Australian
\nindependent watchmakers\u2014are too old, too dumb, and too unwilling to
\ninvest. Useless. Unnecessary. And if that insult isn\u2019t enough, they\u2019ll
\nclaim that by restricting access to parts, they\u2019re protecting you from us<\/u>\u2014from our supposed incompetence and inability to serve you properly.<\/p>\n

Of course, you know this is nonsense.<\/p>\n

While they blame us and deny us parts, they continue ripping you off
\nwith outrageous charges, unnecessary repairs, and months-long wait
\ntimes. It\u2019s monopolistic abuse of power\u2014and in any country that values
\nconsumer protection, it should be illegal.<\/p>\n

Arrogant bastards.<\/p>\n

I won\u2019t beat around the bush: the day Seiko closes our spare parts account will be the last day of my watchmaking career. <\/strong>Not
\n because Seiko repairs keep us financially afloat, but because everyone
\nelse has beaten us down, ridiculed us, and stripped our dignity to the
\npoint where losing Seiko would simply be the end of the road.<\/p>\n

I only hope that what we offer Seiko continues to be seen as valuable.
\nThat our relationship continues and grows. That Seiko becomes an even
\nstronger player in the Australian market, and that you keep enjoying
\nfine Japanese watchmaking\u2014proudly wearing a Seiko.<\/p>\n

One thing is certain, proven over the past decade: we are not dumb, too
\nold, or unwilling to invest. On the contrary\u2014we are young, extremely
\nsmart, and fully capable of making anything from a single tiny watch
\npart to complex space-grade devices.<\/p>\n

And you know this. And that\u2019s what matters.<\/p>\n
